We theoretically investigate the application of topological plasmon polaritons (TPPs) to temperature sensing for the first time. Based on an analogy of the topological edge states in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, TPPs are realized in a one-dimensional intrinsic indium antimonide (InSb) microsphere chain. The existence of TPPs is demonstrated by analyzing the topology of the photonic band structures and the eigenmode distribution. By exploiting the temperature dependence of the permittivity of InSb in the terahertz range, the resonance frequency of the TPPs can be largely tuned by the temperature. Moreover, it is shown that the temperature sensitivity of the TPP resonance frequency can be as high as $0.0264~mathrm{THz/K}$ at room temperature, leading to a figure of merit over 150. By calculating the LDOS near the chain, we further demonstrate that the temperature sensitivity of TPPs is experimentally detectable via near-field probing techniques. This sensitivity is robust since TPPs are highly protected modes immune to disorder and can achieve a strong confinement of radiation. We envisage these TPPs can be utilized as promising candidates for robust and enhanced temperature sensing.

Quadrupole topological insulator is a symmetry-protected higher-order topological phase with intriguing topology of Wannier bands, which, however, has not yet been realized in plasmonic metamaterials. Here, we propose a lattice of plasmon-polaritonic nanocavities which can realize quadrupole topological insulators by exploiting the geometry-dependent sign-reversal of the couplings between the daisy-like nanocavities. The designed system exhibits various topological and trivial phases as characterized by the nested Wannier bands and the topological quadrupole moment which can be controlled by the distances between the nanocavities. Our study opens a pathway toward plasmonic topological metamaterials with quadrupole topology.
To efficiently integrate cutting-edge terahertz technology into compact devices, the highly confined terahertz plasmons are attracting intensive attentions. Compared to plasmons at visible frequencies in metals, terahertz plasmons, typically in lightly doped semiconductors or graphene, are sensitive to carrier density (n) and thus have an easy tunability, which, however, leads to unstable or imprecise terahertz spectra. By deriving a simplified but universal form of plasmon frequencies, here we reveal a unified mechanism for generating unusual n-independent plasmons (DIPs) in all topological states with different dimensions. Remarkably, we predict that terahertz DIPs can be excited in 2D nodal-line and 1D nodal-point systems, confirmed by the first-principles calculations on almost all existing topological semimetals with diverse lattice symmetries. Besides of n independence, the feature of Fermi-velocity and degeneracy-factor dependences in DIPs can be applied to design topological superlattice and multi-walled carbon nanotube metamaterials for broadband terahertz spectroscopy and quantized terahertz plasmons, respectively. Surprisingly, high spatial confinement and quality factor, also insensitive to n, can be simultaneously achieved in these terahertz DIPs. Our findings pave the way to developing topological plasmonic devices for stable terahertz applications.
In the present work we theoretically investigated the excitation of surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) in deformed graphene by attenuated total reflection method. We considered the Otto geometry for SPPs excitation in graphene. Efficiency of SPPs excitation strongly depends on the SPPs propagation direction. The frequency and the incident angle of the most effective excitation of SPPs strongly depend on the polarization of the incident light. Our results may open up the new possibilities for strain-induced molding flow of light at nanoscales.
Crystals of plasmonic metal nanoparticles have intriguing optical properties. They reach the regimes of ultrastrong and deep strong light-matter coupling, where the photonic states need to be included in the simulation of material properties. We propose a quantum description of the plasmon polaritons in supercrystals that starts from the dipole and quadrupole excitations of the nanoparticle building blocks and their coupling to photons. Our model excellently reproduces results of finite difference time domain simulations. It provides detailed insight into the emergence of the polariton states. Using the example of a face centered cubic crystals we show that the dipole and quadrupole states mix in many high symmetry directions of the Brilouin zone. A proper description of the plasmon and plasmon-polariton band structure is only possible when including the quadrupole-derived states. Our model leads to an expression of the reduced coupling strength in nanoparticle supercrystals that we show to enter the deep strong coupling regime for metal fill fractions above $0.8$. In addition to the plasmon-polariton energies we analyse the relative contributions of the dipole, quadrupole, and photonic states to their eigenfunctions and are able to demonstrate the decoupling of light in the deep strong coupling regime. Our results pave the way for a better understanding of the quantum properties of metallic nanoparticle supercrystals in the ultrastrong and deep-strong coupling regime.
Most recently, two remarkable papers [New J. Phys. 21, 113004 (2019); IEEE J. Sel. Top. Quantum Electron 27, 1 (2020)] propose broadband complete transfer terahertz (THz) surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) waveguide coupler by applying coherent quantum control -- Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP). However, previous researches request three SPPs waveguides coupler. In this paper, we propose a new design of a broadband complete transfer THz SPPs coupler with an innovative structure of two waveguides by employing two state adiabatic following. In order to realize this design, we introduce the detuning parameter into the coupling equation of SPPs waveguides for the first time. We believe that this finding will improve the THz communication domain.
