We present near-infrared observations of 42 gravitationally lensed galaxies obtained in the framework of the KMOS Lensed Emission Lines and VElocity Review (KLEVER) Survey, a program aimed at investigating the spatially resolved properties of the ionised gas in 1.2<z<2.5 galaxies by means of a full coverage of the YJ, H and K near-infrared bands. Detailed metallicity maps and gradients are derived for a sub-sample of 28 galaxies from reconstructed source plane emission line maps, exploiting the variety of different emission line diagnostics provided by the broad wavelength coverage of the survey. About 85% of these galaxies are characterised by metallicity gradients shallower than 0.05 dex/kpc and 89% are consistent with flat slope within 3$sigma$ (67% within 1$sigma$), suggesting a mild evolution with cosmic time. In the context of cosmological simulations and chemical evolution models, the presence of efficient feedback mechanisms and/or extended star formation profiles on top of the classical inside-out scenario of mass assembly is generally required to reproduce the observed flatness of the metallicity gradients beyond z$sim$1 . Three galaxies with significantly (> 3$sigma$) inverted gradients are also found, showing an anti-correlation between metallicity and star formation rate density on local scales, possibly suggesting recent episodes of pristine gas accretion or strong radial flows in place. Nevertheless, the individual metallicity maps are characterised by a variety of different morphologies, with flat radial gradients sometimes hiding non-axisymmetric variations on kpc scales which are washed out by azimuthal averages, especially in interacting systems or in those undergoing local episodes of recent star formation.

We derive average radial gradients in the dust attenuation towards HII regions in 609 galaxies at z~1.4, using measurements of the Balmer decrement out to r~3kpc. The Balmer decrements are derived from spatially resolved maps of Halpha and Hbeta emission from the 3D-HST survey. We find that with increasing stellar mass (M) both the normalization and strength of the gradient in dust attenuation increases. Galaxies with a mean mass of <log(M)> = 9.2Msun have little dust attenuation at all radii, whereas galaxies with <log(M)>= 10.2Msun have dust attenuation toward Halpha A(Halpha)~2mag in their central regions. We parameterize this as A(Halpha) = b + c log(r), with b = 0.9 + 1.0 log(M10), c = -1.9 - 2.2 log(M10), r in kpc, and M10 the stellar mass in units of 10^10Msun. This expression can be used to correct spatially resolved measurements of Halpha to radial distributions of star formation. When applied to our data, we find that the star formation rates in the central r<1kpc of galaxies in the highest mass bin are ~ 6 Msun/yr, six times higher than before correction and approximately half of the total star formation rate of these galaxies. If this high central star formation rate is maintained for several Gyr, a large fraction of the stars in present-day bulges likely formed in-situ.
We present gas-phase metallicity and ionization parameter maps of 25 star-forming face-on spiral galaxies from the SAMI Galaxy Survey Data Release 1. Self-consistent metallicity and ionization parameter maps are calculated simultaneously through an iterative process to account for the interdependence of the strong emission line diagnostics involving ([OII]+[OIII])/H$beta$ (R23) and [OIII]/[OII] (O32). The maps are created on a spaxel-by-spaxel basis because HII regions are not resolved at the SAMI spatial resolution. We combine the SAMI data with stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), effective radius (R$_e$), ellipticity, and position angles (PA) from the GAMA survey to analyze their relation to the metallicity and ionization parameter. We find a weak trend of steepening metallicity gradient with galaxy stellar mass, with values ranging from -0.03 to -0.20 dex/R$_e$. Only two galaxies show radial gradients in ionization parameter. We find that the ionization parameter has no significant correlation with either SFR, sSFR (specific star formation rate), or metallicity. For several individual galaxies we find structure in the ionization parameter maps suggestive of spiral arm features. We find a typical ionization parameter range of $7.0 < log(q) < 7.8$ for our galaxy sample with no significant overall structure. An ionization parameter range of this magnitude is large enough to caution the use of metallicity diagnostics which have not considered the effects of a varying ionization parameter distribution.
We investigate how HII region temperature structure assumptions affect direct-method spatially-resolved metallicity observations using multispecies auroral lines in a galaxy from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. SAMI609396B, at redshift $z=0.018$, is a low-mass galaxy in a minor merger with intense star formation, analogous to conditions at high redshifts. We use three methods to derive direct metallicities and compare with strong-line diagnostics. The spatial metallicity trends show significant differences among the three direct methods. Our first method is based on the commonly used electron temperature $T_e$([OIII]) from the [OIII]$lambda$4363 auroral line and a traditional $T_e$([OII]) -- $T_e$([OIII]) calibration. The second method applies a recent empirical correction to the O$^+$ abundance from the [OIII]/[OII] strong-line ratio. The third method infers the $T_e$([OII]) from the [SII]$lambdalambda$4069,76 auroral lines. The first method favours a positive metallicity gradient along SAMI609396B, whereas the second and third methods yield flattened gradients. Strong-line diagnostics produce mostly flat gradients, albeit with unquantified contamination from shocked regions. We conclude that overlooked assumptions about the internal temperature structure of HII regions in the direct method can lead to large discrepancies in metallicity gradient studies. Our detailed analysis of SAMI609396B underlines that high-accuracy metallicity gradient measurements require a wide array of emission lines and improved spatial resolutions in order to properly constrain excitation sources, physical conditions, and temperature structures of the emitting gas. Integral-field spectroscopic studies with future facilities such as JWST/NIRSpec and ground-based ELTs will be crucial in minimising systematic effects on measured gradients in distant galaxies.
A key open issue for galaxy evolution and formation models is the understanding of the different mechanisms of galaxy assembly at various cosmic epochs. The aim of this study is to derive the global and spatially-resolved metal content in high-redshift galaxies. Using VLT/SINFONI IFU spectroscopy of a first sample of 50 galaxies at z~1.2 in the MASSIV survey, we are able to measure the Ha and [NII]6584 emission lines. Using the N2 ratio as a proxy for oxygen abundance in the interstellar medium, we measure the metallicity of the sample galaxies. We develop a tool to extract spectra in annular regions of these galaxies, leading to a spatially-resolved estimate of the oxygen abundance in each galaxy. We derive a metallicity gradient for 26 galaxies in our sample and discover a significant fraction of galaxies with a positive gradient. Using a simple chemical evolution model, we derive infall rates of pristine gas onto the disks. Seven galaxies display a positive gradient at a high confidence level. Four out of these are interacting and one is a chain galaxy. We suggest that interactions might be responsible for shallowing and even inverting the abundance gradient. We also identify two interesting correlations in our sample: a) galaxies with higher gas velocity dispersion have shallower/positive gradients; and b) metal-poor galaxies tend to show a positive gradient whereas metal-rich ones tend to show a negative one. This last observation can be explained by the infall of metal-poor gas into the center of the disks. We address the question of the origin of this infall under the influence of gas flows triggered by interactions and/or cold gas accretion.
Water ($rm H_{2}O$), one of the most ubiquitous molecules in the universe, has bright millimeter-wave emission lines easily observed at high-redshift with the current generation of instruments. The low excitation transition of $rm H_{2}O$, p$-$$rm H_{2}O$(202 $-$ 111) ($ u_{rest}$ = 987.927 GHz) is known to trace the far-infrared (FIR) radiation field independent of the presence of active galactic nuclei (AGN) over many orders-of-magnitude in FIR luminosity (L$_{rm FIR}$). This indicates that this transition arises mainly due to star formation. In this paper, we present spatially ($sim$0.5 arcsec corresponding to $sim$1 kiloparsec) and spectrally resolved ($sim$100 kms$^{-1}$) observations of p$-$$rm H_{2}O$(202 $-$ 111) in a sample of four strong gravitationally lensed high-redshift galaxies with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). In addition to increasing the sample of luminous ($ > $ $10^{12}$L$_{odot}$) galaxies observed with $rm H_{2}O$, this paper examines the L$_{rm H_{2}O}$/L$_{rm FIR}$ relation on resolved scales for the first time at high-redshift. We find that L$_{rm H_{2}O}$ is correlated with L$_{rm FIR}$ on both global and resolved kiloparsec scales within the galaxy in starbursts and AGN with average L$_{rm H_{2}O}$/L$_{rm FIR}$ =$2.76^{+2.15}_{-1.21}times10^{-5}$. We find that the scatter in the observed L$_{rm H_{2}O}$/L$_{rm FIR}$ relation does not obviously correlate with the effective temperature of the dust spectral energy distribution (SED) or the molecular gas surface density. This is a first step in developing p$-$$rm H_{2}O$(202 $-$ 111) as a resolved star formation rate (SFR) calibrator.
