The disordered many-body systems can undergo a transition from the extended ensemble to a localized ensemble, known as many-body localization (MBL), which has been intensively explored in recent years. Nevertheless, the relation between Anderson localization (AL) and MBL is still elusive. Here we show that the MBL can be regarded as an infinite-dimensional AL with the correlated disorder in a virtual lattice. We demonstrate this idea using the disordered XXZ model, in which the excitation of $d$ spins over the fully polarized phase can be regarded as a single-particle model in a $d$ dimensional virtual lattice. With the increasing of $d$, the system will quickly approach the MBL phase, in which the infinite-range correlated disorder ensures the saturation of the critical disorder strength in the thermodynamic limit. From the transition from AL to MBL, the entanglement entropy and the critical exponent from energy level statics are shown to depend weakly on the dimension, indicating that belonging to the same universal class. This work clarifies the fundamental concept of MBL and presents a new picture for understanding the MBL phase in terms of AL.

Many-body localization (MBL) is an example of a dynamical phase of matter that avoids thermalization. While the MBL phase is robust to weak local perturbations, the fate of an MBL system coupled to a thermalizing quantum system that represents a heat bath is an open question that is actively investigated theoretically and experimentally. In this work we consider the stability of an Anderson insulator with a finite density of particles interacting with a single mobile impurity -- a small quantum bath. We give perturbative arguments that support the stability of localization in the strong interaction regime. Large scale tensor network simulations of dynamics are employed to corroborate the presence of the localized phase and give quantitative predictions in the thermodynamic limit. We develop a phenomenological description of the dynamics in the strong interaction regime, and demonstrate that the impurity effectively turns the Anderson insulator into an MBL phase, giving rise to non-trivial entanglement dynamics well captured by our phenomenology.

The localization of one-electron states in the large (but finite) disorder limit is investigated. The inverse participation number shows a non--monotonic behavior as a function of energy owing to anomalous behavior of few-site localization. The two-site approximation is solved analytically and shown to capture the essential features found in numerical simulations on one-, two- and three-dimensional systems. Further improvement has been obtained by solving a three-site model.

The many-body localization transition for Heisenberg spin chain with a speckle disorder is studied. Such a model is equivalent to a system of spinless fermions in an optical lattice with an additional speckle field. Our numerical results show that the many-body localization transition in speckle disorder falls within the same universality class as the transition in an uncorrelated random disorder, in contrast to the quasiperiodic potential typically studied in experiments. This hints at possibilities of experimental studies of the role of rare Griffiths regions and of the interplay of ergodic and localized grains at the many-body localization transition. Moreover, the speckle potential allows one to study the role of correlations in disorder on the transition. We study both spectral and dynamical properties of the system focusing on observables that are sensitive to the disorder type and its correlations. In particular, distributions of local imbalance at long times provide an experimentally available tool that reveals the presence of small ergodic grains even deep in the many-body localized phase in a correlated speckle disorder.
Spectral statistics of disordered systems encode Thouless and Heisenberg time scales whose ratio determines whether the system is chaotic or localized. Identifying similarities between system size and disorder strength scaling of Thouless time for disordered quantum many-body systems with results for 3D and 5D Anderson models, we argue that the two-parameter scaling breaks down in the vicinity of the transition to the localized phase signalling subdiffusive dynamics.
Sufficient disorder is believed to localize static and periodically-driven interacting chains. With quasiperiodic driving by $D$ incommensurate tones, the fate of this many-body localization (MBL) is unknown. We argue that randomly disordered MBL exists for $D=2$, but not for $D geq 3$. Specifically, a putative two-tone driven MBL chain is neither destabilized by thermal avalanches seeded by rare thermal regions, nor by the proliferation of long-range many-body resonances. For $D geq 3$, however, sufficiently large thermal regions have continuous local spectra and slowly thermalize the entire chain. En route, we generalize the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis to the quasiperiodically-driven setting, and verify its predictions numerically. Two-tone driving enables new topological orders with edge signatures; our results suggest that localization protects these orders indefinitely.
