It is known that every infinite index quasi-convex subgroup $H$ of a non-elementary hyperbolic group $G$ is a free factor in a larger quasi-convex subgroup of $G$. We give a probabilistic generalization of this result. That is, we show that when $R$ is a subgroup generated by independent random walks in $G$, then $langle H, Rranglecong Hast R$ with probability going to one as the lengths of the random walks go to infinity and this subgroup is quasi-convex in $G$. Moreover, our results hold for a large class of groups acting on hyperbolic metric spaces and subgroups with quasi-convex orbits. In particular, when $G$ is the mapping class group of a surface and $H$ is a convex cocompact subgroup we show that $langle H, Rrangle$ is convex cocompact and isomorphic to $ Hast R$.
We abstract the notion of an A/QI triple from a number of examples in geometric group theory. Such a triple (G,X,H) consists of a group G acting on a Gromov hyperbolic space X, acylindrically along a finitely generated subgroup H which is quasi-isometrically embedded by the action. Examples include strongly quasi-convex subgroups of relatively hyperbolic groups, convex cocompact subgroups of mapping class groups, many known convex cocompact subgroups of Out(Fn), and groups generated by powers of independent loxodromic WPD elements of a group acting on a Gromov hyperbolic space. We initiate the study of intersection and combination properties of A/QI triples. Under the additional hypothesis that G is finitely generated, we use a method of Sisto to show that H is stable. We apply theorems of Kapovich--Rafi and Dowdall--Taylor to analyze the Gromov boundary of an associated cone-off. We close with some examples and questions.
We generalize a version of small cancellation theory to the class of acylindrically hyperbolic groups. This class contains many groups which admit some natural action on a hyperbolic space, including non-elementary hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups, mapping class groups, and groups of outer automorphisms of free groups. Several applications of this small cancellation theory are given, including to Frattini subgroups and Kazhdan constants, the construction of various exotic quotients, and to approximating acylindrically hyperbolic groups in the topology of marked group presentations.
Given a 2-manifold, a fundamental question to ask is which groups can be realized as the isometry group of a Riemannan metric of constant curvature on the manifold. In this paper, we give a nearly complete classification of such groups for infinite-genus 2-manifolds with no planar ends. Surprisingly, we show there is an uncountable class of such 2-manifolds where every countable group can be realized as an isometry group (namely, those with self-similar end spaces). We apply this result to obtain obstructions to standard group theoretic properties for the groups of homeomorphisms, diffeomorphisms, and the mapping class groups of such 2-manifolds. For example, none of these groups satisfy the Tits Alternative; are coherent; are linear; are cyclically or linearly orderable; or are residually finite. As a second application, we give an algebraic rigidity result for mapping class groups.
We show that the identity component of the group of diffeomorphisms of a closed oriented surface of positive genus admits many unbounded quasi-morphisms. As a corollary, we also deduce that this group is not uniformly perfect and its fragmentation norm is unbounded, answering a question of Burago--Ivanov--Polterovich. As a key tool we construct a hyperbolic graph on which these groups act, which is the analog of the curve graph for the mapping class group.
We classify the connected orientable 2-manifolds whose mapping class groups have a dense conjugacy class. We also show that the mapping class group of a connected orientable 2-manifold has a comeager conjugacy class if and only if the mapping class group is trivial.
