Lip-reading aims to recognize speech content from videos via visual analysis of speakers lip movements. This is a challenging task due to the existence of homophemes-words which involve identical or highly similar lip movements, as well as diverse lip appearances and motion patterns among the speakers. To address these challenges, we propose a novel lip-reading model which captures not only the nuance between words but also styles of different speakers, by a multi-grained spatio-temporal modeling of the speaking process. Specifically, we first extract both frame-level fine-grained features and short-term medium-grained features by the visual front-end, which are then combined to obtain discriminative representations for words with similar phonemes. Next, a bidirectional ConvLSTM augmented with temporal attention aggregates spatio-temporal information in the entire input sequence, which is expected to be able to capture the coarse-gained patterns of each word and robust to various conditions in speaker identity, lighting conditions, and so on. By making full use of the information from different levels in a unified framework, the model is not only able to distinguish words with similar pronunciations, but also becomes robust to appearance changes. We evaluate our method on two challenging word-level lip-reading benchmarks and show the effectiveness of the proposed method, which also demonstrate the above claims.

Predicting the future paths of an agents neighbors accurately and in a timely manner is central to the autonomous applications for collision avoidance. Conventional approaches, e.g., LSTM-based models, take considerable computational costs in the prediction, especially for the long sequence prediction. To support more efficient and accurate trajectory predictions, we propose a novel CNN-based spatial-temporal graph framework GraphTCN, which models the spatial interactions as social graphs and captures the spatio-temporal interactions with a modified temporal convolutional network. In contrast to conventional models, both the spatial and temporal modeling of our model are computed within each local time window. Therefore, it can be executed in parallel for much higher efficiency, and meanwhile with accuracy comparable to best-performing approaches. Experimental results confirm that our model achieves better performance in terms of both efficiency and accuracy as compared with state-of-the-art models on various trajectory prediction benchmark datasets.
This paper presents our solution to the AVA-Kinetics Crossover Challenge of ActivityNet workshop at CVPR 2021. Our solution utilizes multiple types of relation modeling methods for spatio-temporal action detection and adopts a training strategy to integrate multiple relation modeling in end-to-end training over the two large-scale video datasets. Learning with memory bank and finetuning for long-tailed distribution are also investigated to further improve the performance. In this paper, we detail the implementations of our solution and provide experiments results and corresponding discussions. We finally achieve 40.67 mAP on the test set of AVA-Kinetics.
This paper proposes a novel lip-reading driven deep learning framework for speech enhancement. The proposed approach leverages the complementary strengths of both deep learning and analytical acoustic modelling (filtering based approach) as compared to recently published, comparatively simpler benchmark approaches that rely only on deep learning. The proposed audio-visual (AV) speech enhancement framework operates at two levels. In the first level, a novel deep learning-based lip-reading regression model is employed. In the second level, lip-reading approximated clean-audio features are exploited, using an enhanced, visually-derived Wiener filter (EVWF), for the clean audio power spectrum estimation. Specifically, a stacked long-short-term memory (LSTM) based lip-reading regression model is designed for clean audio features estimation using only temporal visual features considering different number of prior visual frames. For clean speech spectrum estimation, a new filterbank-domain EVWF is formulated, which exploits estimated speech features. The proposed EVWF is compared with conventional Spectral Subtraction and Log-Minimum Mean-Square Error methods using both ideal AV mapping and LSTM driven AV mapping. The potential of the proposed speech enhancement framework is evaluated under different dynamic real-world commercially-motivated scenarios (e.g. cafe, public transport, pedestrian area) at different SNR levels (ranging from low to high SNRs) using benchmark Grid and ChiME3 corpora. For objective testing, perceptual evaluation of speech quality is used to evaluate the quality of restored speech. For subjective testing, the standard mean-opinion-score method is used with inferential statistics. Comparative simulation results demonstrate significant lip-reading and speech enhancement improvement in terms of both speech quality and speech intelligibility.
Lip reading, also known as visual speech recognition, aims to recognize the speech content from videos by analyzing the lip dynamics. There have been several appealing progress in recent years, benefiting much from the rapidly developed deep learning techniques and the recent large-scale lip-reading datasets. Most existing methods obtained high performance by constructing a complex neural network, together with several customized training strategies which were always given in a very brief description or even shown only in the source code. We find that making proper use of these strategies could always bring exciting improvements without changing much of the model. Considering the non-negligible effects of these strategies and the existing tough status to train an effective lip reading model, we perform a comprehensive quantitative study and comparative analysis, for the first time, to show the effects of several different choices for lip reading. By only introducing some easy-to-get refinements to the baseline pipeline, we obtain an obvious improvement of the performance from 83.7% to 88.4% and from 38.2% to 55.7% on two largest public available lip reading datasets, LRW and LRW-1000, respectively. They are comparable and even surpass the existing state-of-the-art results.
Lip sync has emerged as a promising technique for generating mouth movements from audio signals. However, synthesizing a high-resolution and photorealistic virtual news anchor is still challenging. Lack of natural appearance, visual consistency, and processing efficiency are the main problems with existing methods. This paper presents a novel lip-sync framework specially designed for producing high-fidelity virtual news anchors. A pair of Temporal Convolutional Networks are used to learn the cross-modal sequential mapping from audio signals to mouth movements, followed by a neural rendering network that translates the synthetic facial map into a high-resolution and photorealistic appearance. This fully trainable framework provides end-to-end processing that outperforms traditional graphics-based methods in many low-delay applications. Experiments also show the framework has advantages over modern neural-based methods in both visual appearance and efficiency.
