We study harmonic maps from a 3-manifold with boundary to $mathbb{S}^1$ and prove a special case of dihedral rigidity of three dimensional cubes whose dihedral angles are $pi / 2$. Furthermore we give some applications to mapping torus hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
For a homotopically energy-minimizing map $u: N^3to S^1$ on a compact, oriented $3$-manifold $N$ with boundary, we establish an identity relating the average Euler characteristic of the level sets $u^{-1}{theta}$ to the scalar curvature of $N$ and the mean curvature of the boundary $partial N$. As an application, we obtain some natural geometric estimates for the Thurston norm on $3$-manifolds with boundary, generalizing results of Kronheimer-Mrowka and the second named author from the closed setting. By combining these techniques with results from minimal surface theory, we obtain moreover a characterization of the Thurston norm via scalar curvature and the harmonic norm for general closed, oriented three-manifolds, extending Kronheimer and Mrowkas characterization for irreducible manifolds to arbitrary topologies.

We study the asymptotics as $puparrow 2$ of stationary $p$-harmonic maps $u_pin W^{1,p}(M,S^1)$ from a compact manifold $M^n$ to $S^1$, satisfying the natural energy growth condition $$int_M|du_p|^p=O(frac{1}{2-p}).$$ Along a subsequence $p_jto 2$, we show that the singular sets $Sing(u_{p_j})$ converge to the support of a stationary, rectifiable $(n-2)$-varifold $V$ of density $Theta_{n-2}(|V|,cdot)geq 2pi$, given by the concentrated part of the measure $$mu=lim_{jtoinfty}(2-p_j)|du_{p_j}|^{p_j}dv_g.$$ When $n=2$, we show moreover that the density of $|V|$ takes values in $2pimathbb{N}$. Finally, on every compact manifold of dimension $ngeq 2$ we produce examples of nontrivial families $(1,2) i pmapsto u_pin W^{1,p}(M,S^1)$ of such maps via natural min-max constructions.

We propose a novel meshless method to compute harmonic maps and conformal maps for surfaces embedded in the Euclidean 3-space, using point cloud data only. Given a surface, or a point cloud approximation, we simply use the standard cubic lattice to approximate its $epsilon$-neighborhood. Then the harmonic map of the surface can be approximated by discrete harmonic maps on lattices. The conformal map, or the surface uniformization, is achieved by minimizing the Dirichlet energy of the harmonic map while deforming the target surface of constant curvature. We propose algorithms and numerical examples for closed surfaces and topological disks.
