Searching for new physics in large data sets needs a balance between two competing effects---signal identification vs background distortion. In this work, we perform a systematic study of both single variable and multivariate jet tagging methods that aim for this balance. The methods preserve the shape of the background distribution by either augmenting the training procedure or the data itself. Multiple quantitative metrics to compare the methods are considered, for tagging 2-, 3-, or 4-prong jets from the QCD background. This is the first study to show that the data augmentation techniques of Planing and PCA based scaling deliver similar performance as the augmented training techniques of Adversarial NN and uBoost, but are both easier to implement and computationally cheaper.

We explicitly study how jet substructure taggers act on a set of signal and background events. We focus on two-pronged hadronic decay of a boosted Z boson. The background to this process comes from QCD jets with masses of the order of m_Z. We find a way to compare various taggers within a single framework by applying them to the most relevant splitting in a jet. We develop a tool, TOY-TAG, which allows one to get insight into what happens when a particular tagger is applied to a set of signal or background events. It also provides estimates for significance and purity. We use our tool to analyze differences between various taggers and potential ways to improve the performance by combining several of them.
We present the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of a Higgs boson in association with one jet at the LHC including the full top-quark mass dependence. The mass of the bottom quark is neglected. The two-loop integrals appearing in the virtual contribution are calculated numerically using the method of Sector Decomposition. We study the Higgs boson transverse momentum distribution, focusing on the high $p_{t,mathrm{H}}$ region, where the top-quark loop is resolved. We find that the next-to-leading order QCD corrections are large but that the ratio of the next-to-leading order to leading order result is similar to that obtained by computing in the limit of large top-quark mass.
Classification of jets with deep learning has gained significant attention in recent times. However, the performance of deep neural networks is often achieved at the cost of interpretability. Here we propose an interpretable network trained on the jet spectrum $S_{2}(R)$ which is a two-point correlation function of the jet constituents. The spectrum can be derived from a functional Taylor series of an arbitrary jet classifier function of energy flows. An interpretable network can be obtained by truncating the series. The intermediate feature of the network is an infrared and collinear safe C-correlator which allows us to estimate the importance of a $S_{2}(R)$ deposit at an angular scale R in the classification. The performance of the architecture is comparable to that of a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained on jet images, although the number of inputs and complexity of architecture is significantly simpler than the CNN classifier. We consider two examples: one is the classification of two-prong jets which differ in color charge of the mother particle, and the other is a comparison between Pythia 8 and Herwig 7 generated jets.
We develop the theoretical framework needed to study the distribution of hadrons with general polarization inside jets, with and without transverse momentum measured with respect to the standard jet axis. The key development in this paper, referred to as polarized jet fragmentation functions, opens up new opportunities to study both collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) fragmentation functions. As two examples of the developed framework, we study longitudinally polarized collinear $Lambda$ and transversely polarized TMD $Lambda$ production inside jets in both $pp$ and $ep$ collisions. We find that both observables have high potential in constraining spin-dependent fragmentation functions with sizeable asymmetries predicted, in particular, at the future Electron-Ion Collider.
We present a model-independent study aimed at characterizing the nature of possible resonances in the jet-photon or jet-$Z$ final state at hadron colliders. Such resonances are expected in many models of compositeness and would be a clear indication of new physics. At leading order, in the narrow width approximation, the matrix elements are parameterized by just a few constants describing the coupling of the various helicities to the resonance. We present the full structure of such amplitudes up to spin two and use them to simulate relevant kinematic distributions that could serve to constrain the coupling structure. This also generalizes the signal generation strategy that is currently pursued by ATLAS and CMS to the most general case in the considered channels. While the determination of the P/CP properties of the interaction seems to be out of reach within this framework, there is a wealth of information to be gained about the spin of the resonance and the relative couplings of the helicities.
