The study focuses on the 3D electro-hydrodynamic (EHD) instability for flow between to parallel electrodes with unipolar charge injection with and without cross-flow. Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) with two-relaxation time (TRT) model is used to study flow pattern. In the absence of cross-flow, the base-state solution is hydrostatic, and the electric field is one-dimensional. With strong charge injection and high electrical Rayleigh number, the system exhibits electro-convective vortices. Disturbed by different perturbation patterns, such as rolling pattern, square pattern, and hexagon pattern, the flow patterns develop according to the most unstable modes. The growth rate and the unstable modes are examined using dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) of the transient numerical solutions. The interactions between the applied Couette and Poiseuille cross-flows and electroconvective vortices lead to the flow patterns change. When the cross-flow velocity is greater than a threshold value, the spanwise structures are suppressed; however, the cross-flow does not affect the streamwise patterns. The dynamics of the transition is analyzed by DMD. Hysteresis in the 3D to 2D transition is characterized by the non-dimensional parameter Y, a ratio of the coulombic force to viscous term in the momentum equation. The change from 3D to 2D structures enhances the convection marked by a significant increase in the electric Nusselt number.

We present numerical simulations of three-dimensional thermal convective flows in a cubic cell at high Rayleigh number using thermal lattice Boltzmann (LB) method. The thermal LB model is based on double distribution function approach, which consists of a D3Q19 model for the Navier-Stokes equations to simulate fluid flows and a D3Q7 model for the convection-diffusion equation to simulate heat transfer. Relaxation parameters are adjusted to achieve the isotropy of the fourth-order error term in the thermal LB model. Two types of thermal convective flows are considered: one is laminar thermal convection in side-heated convection cell, which is heated from one vertical side and cooled from the other vertical side; while the other is turbulent thermal convection in Rayleigh-Benard convection cell, which is heated from the bottom and cooled from the top. In side-heated convection cell, steady results of hydrodynamic quantities and Nusselt numbers are presented at Rayleigh numbers of $10^6$ and $10^7$, and Prandtl number of 0.71, where the mesh sizes are up to $257^3$; in Rayleigh-Benard convection cell, statistical averaged results of Reynolds and Nusselt numbers, as well as kinetic and thermal energy dissipation rates are presented at Rayleigh numbers of $10^6$, $3times 10^6$, and $10^7$, and Prandtl numbers of 0.7 and 7, where the nodes within thermal boundary layer are around 8. Compared with existing benchmark data obtained by other methods, the present LB model can give consistent results.
An electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flow in a point-to-ring corona configuration is investigated experimentally, analytically and via a multiphysics numerical model. The interaction between the accelerated ions and the neutral gas molecules is modeled as an external body force in the Navier-Stokes equation (NSE). The gas flow characteristics are solved from conservation principles with spectral methods. The analytical and numerical simulation results are compared against experimental measurements of the cathode voltage, ion concentration, and velocity profiles. A nondimensional parameter, X, is formulated as the ratio of the local electric force to the inertial term in the NSE. In the region of X > 1, the electric force dominates the flow dynamics, while in the X << 1 region, the balance of viscous and inertial terms yields traditional pipe flow characteristics.
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have recently been applied to predict or model fluid dynamics. However, mechanisms of CNNs for learning fluid dynamics are still not well understood, while such understanding is highly necessary to optimize the network or to reduce trial-and-errors during the network optmization. In the present study, a CNN to predict future three-dimensional unsteady wake flow using flow fields in the past occasions is developed. Mechanisms of the developed CNN for prediction of wake flow behind a circular cylinder are investigated in two flow regimes: the three-dimensional wake transition regime and the shear-layer transition regime. Feature maps in the CNN are visualized to compare flow structures which are extracted by the CNN from flow at the two flow regimes. In both flow regimes, feature maps are found to extract similar sets of flow structures such as braid shear-layers and shedding vortices. A Fourier analysis is conducted to investigate mechanisms of the CNN for predicting wake flow in flow regimes with different wave number characteristics. It is found that a convolution layer in the CNN integrates and transports wave number information from flow to predict the dynamics. Characteristics of the CNN for transporting input information including time histories of flow variables is analyzed by assessing contributions of each flow variable and time history to feature maps in the CNN. Structural similarities between feature maps in the CNN are calculated to reveal the number of feature maps that contain similar flow structures. By reducing the number of feature maps that contain similar flow structures, it is also able to successfully reduce the number of parameters to learn in the CNN by 85% without affecting prediction performances.

The two-dimensional regular and chaotic electro-convective flow states of a dielectric liquid between two infinite parallel planar electrodes are investigated using a two-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method. Positive charges injected at the metallic planar electrode located at the bottom of the dielectric liquid layer are transported towards the grounded upper electrode by the synergy of the flow and the electric field. The various flow states can be characterized by a non-dimensional parameter, the electric Rayleigh number. Gradually increasing the electric Rayleigh number, the flow system sequentially evolves via quasi-periodic, periodic, and chaotic flow states with five identified bifurcations. The turbulence kinetic energy spectrum is shown to follow the -3 law as the flow approaches turbulence. The spectrum is found to follow a -5 law when the flow is periodic.
We investigate through numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations the influence of the surface roughness on the fluid flow through fracture joints. Using the Hurst exponent $H$ to characterize the roughness of the self-affine surfaces that constitute the fracture, our analysis reveal the important interplay between geometry and inertia on the flow. Precisely, for low values of Reynolds numbers Re, we use Darcys law to quantify the hydraulic resistance $G$ of the fracture and show that its dependence on $H$ can be explained in terms of a simple geometrical model for the tortuosity $tau$ of the channel. At sufficiently high values of Re, when inertial effects become relevant, our results reveal that nonlinear corrections up to third-order to Darcys law are aproximately proportional to $H$. These results imply that the resistance $G$ to the flow follows a universal behavior by simply rescaling it in terms of the fracture resistivity and using an effective Reynolds number, namely, Re/$H$. Our results also reveal the presence of quasi-one-dimensional channeling, even considering the absence of shear displacement between upper and lower surfaces of the self-affine fracture.
