The emerging field of self-driven active particles in fluid environments has recently created significant interest in the biophysics and bioengineering communities owing to their promising future biomedical and technological applications. These microswimmers move autonomously through aqueous media where under realistic situations they encounter a plethora of external stimuli and confining surfaces with peculiar elastic properties. Based on a far-field hydrodynamic model, we present an analytical theory to describe the physical interaction and hydrodynamic couplings between a self-propelled active microswimmer and an elastic interface that features resistance toward shear and bending. We model the active agent as a superposition of higher-order Stokes singularities and elucidate the associated translational and rotational velocities induced by the nearby elastic boundary. Our results show that the velocities can be decomposed in shear and bending related contributions which approach the velocities of active agents close to a no-slip rigid wall in the steady limit. The transient dynamics predict that contributions to the velocities of the microswimmer due to bending resistance are generally more pronounced than to shear resistance. Our results provide insight into the control and guidance of artificial and synthetic self-propelling active microswimmers near elastic confinements.

It is known that an object translating parallel to a soft wall in a viscous fluid produces hydro- dynamic stresses that deform the wall, which, in turn, results in a lift force on the object. Recent experiments with cylinders sliding under gravity near a soft incline, which confirmed theoretical arguments for the lift force, also reported an unexplained steady-state rotation of the cylinders [Saintyves et al. PNAS 113(21), 2016]. Motivated by these observations, we show, in the lubrication limit, that an infinite cylinder that translates in a viscous fluid parallel to a soft wall at constant speed and separation distance must also rotate in order to remain free of torque. Using the Lorentz reciprocal theorem, we show analytically that for small deformations of the elastic layer, the angular velocity of the cylinder scales with the cube of the sliding speed. These predictions are confirmed numerically. We then apply the theory to the gravity-driven motion of a cylinder near a soft incline and find qualitative agreement with the experimental observations, namely that a softer elastic layer results in a greater angular speed of the cylinder.
The behaviour of microscopic swimmers has previously been explored near large scale confining geometries and in the presence of very small-scale surface roughness. Here we consider an intermediate case of how a simple microswimmer, the tangential spherical squirmer, behaves adjacent to singly- and doubly-periodic sinusoidal surface topographies that spatially oscillate with an amplitude that is an order of magnitude less than the swimmer size and wavelengths within an order of magnitude of this scale. The nearest neighbour regularised Stokeslet method is used for numerical explorations after validating its accuracy for a spherical tangential squirmer that swims stably near a flat surface. The same squirmer is then introduced to the different surface topographies. The key governing factor in the resulting swimming behaviour is the size of the squirmer relative to the surface topography wavelength. When the squirmer is much larger, or much smaller, than the surface topography wavelength then directional guidance is not observed. Once the squirmer size is on the scale of the topography wavelength limited guidance is possible, often with local capture in the topography troughs. However, complex dynamics can also emerge, especially when the initial configuration is not close to alignment along topography troughs or above topography crests. In contrast to sensitivity in alignment and the topography wavelength, reductions in the amplitude of the surface topography or variations in the shape of the periodic surface topography do not have extensive impacts on the squirmer behaviour. Our findings more generally highlight that detailed numerical explorations are necessary to determine how surface topographies may interact with a given swimmer that swims stably near a flat surface and whether surface topographies may be designed to provide such swimmers with directional guidance.
A numerical study is presented to analyze the thermal mechanisms of unsteady, supersonic granular flow, by means of hydrodynamic simulations of the Navier-Stokes granular equations. For this purpose a paradigmatic problem in granular dynamics such as the Faraday instability is selected. Two different approaches for the Navier-Stokes transport coefficients for granular materials are considered, namely the traditional Jenkins-Richman theory for moderately dense quasi-elastic grains, and the improved Garzo-Dufty-Lutsko theory for arbitrary inelasticity, which we also present here. Both solutions are compared with event-driven simulations of the same system under the same conditions, by analyzing the density, the temperature and the velocity field. Important differences are found between the two approaches leading to interesting implications. In particular, the heat transfer mechanism coupled to the density gradient which is a distinctive feature of inelastic granular gases, is responsible for a major discrepancy in the temperature field and hence in the diffusion mechanisms.
A model of an autonomous three-sphere microswimmer is proposed by implementing a coupling effect between the two natural lengths of an elastic microswimmer. Such a coupling mechanism is motivated by the previous models for synchronization phenomena in coupled oscillator systems. We numerically show that a microswimmer can acquire a nonzero steady state velocity and a finite phase difference between the oscillations in the natural lengths. These velocity and phase difference are almost independent of the initial phase difference. There is a finite range of the coupling parameter for which a microswimmer can have an autonomous directed motion. The stability of the phase difference is investigated both numerically and analytically in order to determine its bifurcation structure.
We investigate the gravitational settling of a long, model elastic filament in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. We show that the flow produces a strongly fluctuating settling velocity, whose mean is moderately enhanced over the still-fluid terminal velocity, and whose variance has a power-law dependence on the filaments weight but is surprisingly unaffected by its elasticity. In contrast, the tumbling of the filament is shown to be closely coupled to its stretching, and manifests as a Poisson process with a tumbling time that increases with the elastic relaxation time of the filament.
