Since the incident nuclei in heavy-ion collisions do not carry strangeness, the global net strangeness of the detected hadrons has to vanish. We show that there is an intimate relation between strangeness neutrality and baryon-strangeness correlations. In the context of heavy-ion collisions, the former is a consequence of quark number conservation of the strong interactions while the latter are sensitive probes of the character of QCD matter. We investigate the sensitivity of baryon-strangeness correlations on the freeze-out conditions of heavy-ion collisions by studying their dependence on temperature, baryon- and strangeness chemical potential. The impact of strangeness neutrality on the QCD equation of state at finite chemical potentials will also be discussed. We model the low-energy sector of QCD by an effective Polyakov loop enhanced quark-meson model with 2+1 dynamical quark flavors and use the functional renormalization group to account for the non-perturbative quantum fluctuations of hadrons.

Since the incident nuclei in heavy-ion collisions do not carry strangeness, the global net strangeness of the detected hadrons has to vanish. We investigate the impact of strangeness neutrality on the phase structure and thermodynamics of QCD at finite baryon and strangeness chemical potential. To this end, we study the low-energy sector of QCD within a Polyakov loop enhanced quark-meson effective theory with 2+1 dynamical quark flavors. Non-perturbative quantum, thermal, and density fluctuations are taken into account with the functional renormalization group. We show that the impact of strangeness neutrality on thermodynamic quantities such as the equation of state is sizable.
We derive a simple relation between strangeness neutrality and baryon-strangeness correlations. In heavy-ion collisions, the former is a consequence of quark number conservation of the strong interactions while the latter are sensitive probes of the character of QCD matter. This relation allows us to directly extract baryon-strangeness correlations from the strangeness chemical potential at strangeness neutrality. The explicit calculations are performed within a low energy theory of QCD with 2+1 dynamical quark flavors at finite temperature and density. Non-perturbative quark and hadron fluctuations are taken into account within the functional renormalization group. The results show the pronounced sensitivity of baryon-strangeness correlations on the QCD phase transition and the crucial role that strangeness neutrality plays for this observable.

With the isovector coupling constants adjusted to reproduce the physical pion mass and lattice QCD results in baryon-free quark matter, we have carried out rigourous calculations for the pion condensate in the 3-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, and studied the 3-dimensional QCD phase diagram. With the increasing isospin chemical potential $mu_I$, we have observed two nonzero solutions of the pion condensate at finite baryon chemical potentials $mu_B$, representing respectively the pion superfluid phase and the Sarma phase, and their appearance and disappearance correspond to a second-order (first-order) phase transition at higher (lower) temperatures $T$ and lower (higher) $mu_B$. Calculations by assuming equal constituent mass of $u$ and $d$ quarks would lead to large errors of the QCD phase diagram within $mu_B in (500, 900)$ MeV, and affect the position of the critical end point.
We present the computation of invariants that arise in the strong coupling expansion of lattice QCD. These invariants are needed for Monte Carlo simulations of Lattice QCD with staggered fermions in a dual, color singlet representation. This formulation is in particular useful to tame the finite density sign problem. The gauge integrals in this limiting case $betarightarrow 0$ are well known, but the gauge integrals needed to study the gauge corrections are more involved. We discuss a method to evaluate such integrals. The phase boundary of lattice QCD for staggered fermions in the $mu_B-T$ plane has been established in the strong coupling limit. We present numerical simulations away from the strong coupling limit, taking into account the higher order gauge corrections via plaquette occupation numbers. This allows to study the nuclear and chiral transition as a function of $beta$.
We study dynamical chiral symmetry breaking for quarks in the fundamental representation of $SU(N_c)$ for $N_f$ number of light quark flavors. We also investigate the phase diagram of quantum chromodynamics at finite temperature $T$ and/or in the presence of a constant external magnetic field $eB$. The unified formalism for this analysis is provided by a symmetry-preserving Schwinger-Dyson equations treatment of a vector$times$vector contact interaction model which encodes several well-established features of quantum chromodynamics to mimic the latter as closely as possible. Deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration are triggered above a critical value of $N_f$ at $T=0=eB$. On the other hand, increasing temperature itself screens strong interactions, thus ensuring that a smaller value of $N_f$ is sufficient to restore chiral symmetry at higher temperatures. We also observe the well-known phenomenon of magnetic catalysis for a strong enough magnetic field. However, we note that if the effective coupling strength of the model decreases as a function of magnetic field, it can trigger inverse magnetic catalysis in a certain window of this functional dependence. Our model allows for the simultaneous onset of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and confinement for each case. Qualitative as well as quantitative predictions of our simple but effective model are in reasonably satisfactory agreement with lattice results and other reliable and refined predictions based upon intricate continuum studies of quantum chromodynamics.
