Organometallic nanostructures are promising candidates for applications in optoelectronics, magnetism and catalysis. Our bottom-up approach employs a cyano-functionalized terminal alkyne species (CN-DETP) on the Ag(110) surface to fabricate 2D domains of regularly stacked Ag-acetylide nanowires. We unravel their adsorption properties and give evidence to their organometallic character with the aid of complementary surface-sensitive techniques, i.e. scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy. Guided by the anisotropic (110) surface, highly oriented nanowires form in two enantiomorphic domains of regularly stacked trans isomers, whereby the bifunctional design of CN-DETP gives rise to orthogonal bonding motifs. Based on STM imaging, we find high thermal stability of the Ag-bis-acetylide wires, without conversion into graphdiyne chains. Our approach based on orthogonal bifunctionalization and selective functional group recognition extends the toolbox of creating alkyne-based nanostructures at interfaces.

The density of two-dimensional Ag adatom gases on W(110) is determined by monitoring local electron reflectivity using low energy electron microscopy (LEEM). This method of adatom concentration measurement can detect changes in adatom density at least as small as 10$^{-3}$ ML for a $mu$m size region of the surface. Using this technique at high temperatures, we measure the sublimation rates of Ag adatoms on W(110). At lower temperatures, where Ag adatoms condense into monolayer islands, we determine the temperature dependence of the density of adatoms coexisting with this condensed phase and compare it with previous estimates.
We report that metal-free phthalocyanine (H2Pc) molecules with a central cavity are able to incorporate Ag atoms from an Ag(110) surface thus creating silver-phthalocyanine (AgPc). The reaction was investigated by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) under ultrahigh vacuum, and the metalation of ce{H2Pc} at the interface was confirmed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Three different kinds of molecules were found on the surface that are assigned to H2Pc, the corresponding dehydrogenated molecules (Pc) and AgPc. The relative amounts of Pc and AgPc increase with increasing annealing temperature. We suggest that the reaction with Ag atoms from the steps of the surface occurs favorably only for already dehydrogenated molecules; thus, the metalation of H2Pc is likely limited by the heat-induced dehydrogenation. Density functional theory simulations of the reaction path are presented to corroborate this hypothesis.

Based on density functional theory calculations, we systematically investigate the behaviors of a H atom in Ag-doped ZnO, involving the preference sites, diffusion behaviors, the electronic structures and vibrational properties. We find that a H atom can migrate to the doped Ag to form a Ag-H complex by overcoming energy barriers of 0.3 - 1.0 eV. The lowest-energy site for H location is the bond center of a Ag-O in the basal plane. Moreover, H can migrate between this site and its equivalent sites with energy cost of less than 0.5 eV. In contrast, dissociation of such a Ag-H complex needs energy of about 1.1 - 1.3 eV. This implies that the Ag-H complexes can commonly exist in the Ag-doped ZnO, which have a negative effect on the desirable p-type carrier concentrations of Ag-doped ZnO. In addition, based on the frozen phonon calculation, the vibrational properties of ZnO with a Ag-H complex are predicted. Some new vibrational modes associated with the Ag-H complex present in the vibrational spectrum of the system.
Highly flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material with excellent shielding performance is of great significance to practical applications in next-generation flexible devices. However, most EMI materials suffer from insufficient flexibility and complicated preparation methods. In this study, we propose a new scheme to fabricate a magnetic Ni particle/Ag matrix composite ultrathin film on a paper surface. For a ~2 micro meter thick film on paper, the EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) was found to be 46.2 dB at 8.1 GHz after bending 200,000 times over a radius of ~2 mm. The sheet resistance (Rsq) remained lower than 2.30 Ohm after bending 200,000 times. Contrary to the change in Rsq, the EMI SE of the film generally increased as the weight ratio of Ag to Ni increased, in accordance with the principle that EMI SE is positively related with an increase in electrical conductivity. Desirable EMI shielding ability, ultrahigh flexibility, and simple processing provide this material with excellent application prospects.
We present dynamic Monte Carlo simulations of a lattice-gas model for bromine electrodeposition on single-crystal silver (100). This system undergoes a continuous phase transition between a disordered phase at low electrode potentials and a commensurate c(2X2) phase at high potentials. The lattice-gas parameters are determined by fitting simulated equilibrium adsorption isotherms to chronocoulometric data, and free-energy barriers for adsorption/desorption and lateral diffusion are estimated from ab initio data in the literature. Cyclic voltammograms in the quasi-static limit are obtained by equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations, while for nonzero potential scan rates we use dynamic Monte Carlo simulation. The butterfly shapes of the simulated voltammograms are in good agreement with experiments. Simulated potential-step experiments give results for the time evolution of the Br coverage, as well as the c(2X2) order parameter and its correlation length. During phase ordering following a positive potential step, the system obeys dynamic scaling. The disordering following a negative potential step is well described by random desorption with diffusion. Both ordering and disordering processes are strongly influenced by the ratio of the time scales for desorption and diffusion. Our results should be testable by experiments, in particular cyclic voltammetry and surface X-ray scattering.
