The knowledge of how the magnetization looks inside a ferromagnet is often hindered by the limitations of the available experimental methods that are sensitive only to the surface regions or limited in spatial resolution. We report the 3D tomographic reconstruction of the magnetization within a ferromagnetic film of 240 nm in thickness using soft X ray microscopy and magnetic dichroism. The film has periodic magnetic domains forming stripes and closure domains found to be shifted from the stripe array by 1/4 of the period. In addition, the bifurcations of the stripes, which act as inversion nuclei of the magnetization, evidence in 3D meron singularities and Bloch points at the interior of the film. This novel method can be easily extended to magnetic stacks in spintronics applications and other singularities in films.

The magnetic behavior of truncated conical nanoparticles in patterned thin films is investigated as a function of their size and shape. Using a scaling technique, phase diagrams giving the relative stability of characteristic internal magnetic structures of the particles are obtained. The role of the uniaxial anisotropy in determining the magnetic properties of such systems is discussed, and a simple method for stablishing its strength is proposed.
We have performed magnetotransport measurements in CeTe$_{3}$ thin films down to $0.2~{rm K}$. It is known that CeTe$_{3}$ has two magnetic transitions at $T_{rm N1} approx 3~{rm K}$ and $T_{rm N2} approx 1~{rm K}$. A clear Shubnikov-de-Haas (SdH) oscillation was observed at $4~{rm K}$, demonstrating the strong two-dimensional nature in this material. Below $T_{rm N2}$, the SdH oscillation has two frequencies, indicating that the Fermi surface could be slightly modulated due to the second magnetic transition. We also observed a magnetic hysteresis in the SdH oscillation below $T_{rm N1}$. Especially, there is a unique spike in the magnetoresistance at $B approx 0.6~{rm T}$ only when the magnetic field is swept from a high enough field (more than $2~{rm T}$) to zero field.
We investigate the structure and magnetic properties of thin films of the LaCoO$_{3}$ compound. Thin films are deposited by pulsed laser deposition on various substrates in order to tune the strain from compressive to tensile. Single-phase (001) oriented LaCoO$_{3}$ layers were grown on all substrates despite large misfits. The tetragonal distortion of the films covers a wide range from -2% to 2.8%. Our LaCoO$_{3}$ films are ferromagnetic with Curie temperature around 85 K, contrary to the bulk. The total magnetic moment is below $1mu_{B}$/Co$^{3+}$, a value relatively small for an exited spin-state of the Co$^{3+}$ ions, but comparable to values reported in literature. A correlation of strain states and magnetic moment of Co$^{3+}$ ions in LaCoO$_{3}$ thin films is observed.
Soft X-ray magnetic vector tomography has been used to visualize with unprecedented detail and solely from experimental data the 3D magnetic configuration of a ferrimagnetic Gd12Co88/Nd17Co83/Gd24Co76 multilayer with competing anisotropy, exchange and magnetostatic interactions at different depths. The trilayer displays magnetic stripe domains, arranged in a chevron pattern, which are imprinted from the central Nd17Co83 into the bottom Gd12Co88 layer with a distorted closure domain structure across the thickness. Near the top Gd24Co76 layer, local exchange springs with out-of-plane magnetization reversal, modulated ripple patterns and magnetic vortices and antivortices across the thickness are observed. The detailed analysis of the magnetic tomogram shows that the effective strength of the exchange spring at the NdCo/GdCo interface can be finely tuned by GdxCo1-x composition and anisotropy (determined by sample fabrication) and in-plane stripe orientation (adjustable), demonstrating the capability of 3D magnetic visualization techniques in magnetic engineering research.
We investigated the magnetic structure of an orthorhombic YMnO3 thin film by resonant soft x-ray and hard x-ray diffraction. We observed a temperature-dependent incommensurate magnetic reflection below 45 K and a commensurate lattice-distortion reflection below 35 K. These results demonstrate that the ground state is composed of coexisting E-type and cycloidal states. Their different ordering temperatures clarify the origin of the large polarization to be caused by the E-type antiferromagnetic states in the orthorhombic YMnO3 thin film.
