Given $n times n$ real symmetric matrices $A_1, dots, A_m$, the following {it spectral minimax} property holds: $$min_{X in mathbf{Delta}_n} max_{y in S_m} sum_{i=1}^m y_iA_i bullet X=max_{y in S_m} min_{X in mathbf{Delta}_n} sum_{i=1}^m y_iA_i bullet X,$$ where $S_m$ is the simplex and $mathbf{Delta}_n$ the spectraplex. For diagonal $A_i$s this reduces to the classic minimax.

Is is shown here that the simple test of quantumness for a single system of arXiv:0704.1962 (for a recent experimental realization see arXiv:0804.1646) has exactly the same relation to the discussion of to the problem of describing the quantum system via a classical probabilistic scheme (that is in terms of hidden variables, or within a realistic theory) as the von Neumann theorem (1932). The latter one was shown by Bell (1966) to stem from an assumption that the hidden variable values for a sum of two non-commuting observables (which is an observable too) have to be, for each individual system, equal to sums of eigenvalues of the two operators. One cannot find a physical justification for such an assumption to hold for non-commeasurable variables. On the positive side. the criterion may be useful in rejecting models which are based on stochastic classical fields. Nevertheless the example used by the Authors has a classical optical realization.
The concept of a classical player, corresponding to a classical random variable, is extended to include quantum random variables in the form of self adjoint operators on infinite dimensional Hilbert space. A quantum version of Von Neumanns Minimax theorem for infinite dimensional (or continuous) games is proved.

We prove that a fractional perfect matching in a non-bipartite graph can be written, in polynomial time, as a convex combination of perfect matchings. This extends the Birkhoff-von Neumann Theorem from bipartite to non-bipartite graphs. The algorithm of Birkhoff and von Neumann is greedy; it starts with the given fractional perfect matching and successively removes from it perfect matchings, with appropriate coefficients. This fails in non-bipartite graphs -- removing perfect matchings arbitrarily can lead to a graph that is non-empty but has no perfect matchings. Using odd cuts appropriately saves the day.

A unital ring is called clean (resp. strongly clean) if every element can be written as the sum of an invertible element and an idempotent (resp. an invertible element and an idempotent that commutes). T.Y. Lam proposed a question: which von Neumann algebras are clean as rings? In this paper, we characterize strongly clean von Neumann algebras and prove that all finite von Neumann algebras and all separable infinite factors are clean.
We study the learnability of a class of compact operators known as Schatten--von Neumann operators. These operators between infinite-dimensional function spaces play a central role in a variety of applications in learning theory and inverse problems. We address the question of sample complexity of learning Schatten-von Neumann operators and provide an upper bound on the number of measurements required for the empirical risk minimizer to generalize with arbitrary precision and probability, as a function of class parameter $p$. Our results give generalization guarantees for regression of infinite-dimensional signals from infinite-dimensional data. Next, we adapt the representer theorem of Abernethy emph{et al.} to show that empirical risk minimization over an a priori infinite-dimensional, non-compact set, can be converted to a convex finite dimensional optimization problem over a compact set. In summary, the class of $p$-Schatten--von Neumann operators is probably approximately correct (PAC)-learnable via a practical convex program for any $p < infty$.
