We propose a highly efficient atomically-resolved mode of electron magnetic chiral dichroism. This method exploits the recently introduced orbital angular momentum spectrometer to analyze the inelastically scattered electrons allowing for simultaneous dispersion in both energy and angular momentum. The technique offers several advantages over previous formulations of electron magnetic chiral dichroism as it requires much simpler experimental conditions in terms of specimen orientation and thickness. A novel simulation algorithm, based on the multislice description of the beam propagation, is used to anticipate the advantages of the new approach over current electron magnetic chiral dichroism implementations. Numerical calculations confirm an increased magnetic signal to noise ratio with in plane atomic resolution.
In this work we derive sum rules for orbital angular momentum(OAM) resolved electron magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD) which enable the evaluation of the strength of spin and orbital components of the atomic magnetic moments in a crystalline sample. We also demonstrate through numerical simulations that these rules appear to be only slightly dependent from the dynamical diffraction of the electron beam in the sample, making possible their application without the need of additional dynamical diffraction calculations.
This work reports the measurement of magnetic dichroism in angular-resolved photoemission from in-plane magnetized buried thin films. The high bulk sensitivity of hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) in combination with circularly polarized radiation enables the investigation of the magnetic properties of buried layers. HAXPES experiments with an excitation energy of 8 keV were performed on exchange-biased magnetic layers covered by thin oxide films. Two types of structures were investigated with the IrMn exchange-biasing layer either above or below the ferromagnetic layer: one with a CoFe layer on top and another with a Co$_2$FeAl layer buried beneath the IrMn layer. A pronounced magnetic dichroism is found in the Co and Fe $2p$ states of both materials. The localization of the magnetic moments at the Fe site conditioning the peculiar characteristics of the Co$_2$FeAl Heusler compound, predicted to be a half-metallic ferromagnet, is revealed from the magnetic dichroism detected in the Fe $2p$ states.
Inversion-symmetric crystals are optically isotropic and thus naively not expected to show dichroism effects in optical absorption and photoemission processes. Here, we find a strong linear dichroism effect (up to 42.4%) in the conduction band of inversion-symmetric bilayer MoS$_2$, when measuring energy- and momentum-resolved snapshots of excited electrons by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We model the polarization-dependent photoemission intensity in the transiently-populated conduction band using the semiconductor Bloch equations and show that the observed dichroism emerges from intralayer single-particle effects within the isotropic part of the dispersion. This leads to optical excitations with an anisotropic momentum-dependence in an otherwise inversion symmetric material.
Circular dichroism (CD) caused by the response of a chiral object to circularly polarized light has been well established, and the strong CD of plasmonic meta-molecules has also become of interest in recent years; however, their response if the light also has orbital angular momentum is unclear. In this paper, the dichroism of a plasmonic cuboid-protuberance chiral structure under the illumination of a light beam with both orbital and spin angular momentums is numerically investigated. Distinguished spectra are observed under the different momentums. The circular dichroism under the combination of vortex beam and light spin is enhanced. This phenomenon is attributed to the partial spatial excitation of the nanoparticle, and the strong dichroism is simultaneously caused because of the interaction of the induced electric and magnetic modes and other higher-order modes caused by the partial excitation of the vortex beam. This research provides further insight into chiral light-matter interactions and the dichroism of light with orbital angular momentum.
We have performed angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on the surface states of SrTiO$_3$(001) using linearly and circularly polarized light to investigate the subband structures of out-of-plane $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals and chiral orbital angular momentum (OAM). The data taken in the first Brillouin zone reveal new subbands for $d_{xz/yz}$ orbitals with Fermi wave vectors of 0.25 and 0.45 $mathrm{AA}^{-1}$ in addition to the previously reported ones. As a result, there are at least two subbands for all the Ti 3d t$_{2g}$ orbitals. Our circular dichroism ARPES data is suggestive of a chiral OAM structure in the surface states and may provide clues to the origin of the linear Rashba-like surface band splitting.
