Haze degrades content and obscures information of images, which can negatively impact vision-based decision-making in real-time systems. In this paper, we propose an efficient fully convolutional neural network (CNN) image dehazing method designed to run on edge graphical processing units (GPUs). We utilize three variants of our architecture to explore the dependency of dehazed image quality on parameter count and model design. The first two variants presented, a small and big version, make use of a single efficient encoder-decoder convolutional feature extractor. The final variant utilizes a pair of encoder-decoders for atmospheric light and transmission map estimation. Each variant ends with an image refinement pyramid pooling network to form the final dehazed image. For the big variant of the single-encoder network, we demonstrate state-of-the-art performance on the NYU Depth dataset. For the small variant, we maintain competitive performance on the super-resolution O/I-HAZE datasets without the need for image cropping. Finally, we examine some challenges presented by the Dense-Haze dataset when leveraging CNN architectures for dehazing of dense haze imagery and examine the impact of loss function selection on image quality. Benchmarks are included to show the feasibility of introducing this approach into real-time systems.

In this paper, we propose an end-to-end feature fusion at-tention network (FFA-Net) to directly restore the haze-free image. The FFA-Net architecture consists of three key components: 1) A novel Feature Attention (FA) module combines Channel Attention with Pixel Attention mechanism, considering that different channel-wise features contain totally different weighted information and haze distribution is uneven on the different image pixels. FA treats different features and pixels unequally, which provides additional flexibility in dealing with different types of information, expanding the representational ability of CNNs. 2) A basic block structure consists of Local Residual Learning and Feature Attention, Local Residual Learning allowing the less important information such as thin haze region or low-frequency to be bypassed through multiple local residual connections, let main network architecture focus on more effective information. 3) An Attention-based different levels Feature Fusion (FFA) structure, the feature weights are adaptively learned from the Feature Attention (FA) module, giving more weight to important features. This structure can also retain the information of shallow layers and pass it into deep layers. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed FFA-Net surpasses previous state-of-the-art single image dehazing methods by a very large margin both quantitatively and qualitatively, boosting the best published PSNR metric from 30.23db to 36.39db on the SOTS indoor test dataset. Code has been made available at GitHub.
Single image dehazing is a challenging ill-posed problem that has drawn significant attention in the last few years. Recently, convolutional neural networks have achieved great success in image dehazing. However, it is still difficult for these increasingly complex models to recover accurate details from the hazy image. In this paper, we pay attention to the feature extraction and utilization of the input image itself. To achieve this, we propose a Multi-scale Topological Network (MSTN) to fully explore the features at different scales. Meanwhile, we design a Multi-scale Feature Fusion Module (MFFM) and an Adaptive Feature Selection Module (AFSM) to achieve the selection and fusion of features at different scales, so as to achieve progressive image dehazing. This topological network provides a large number of search paths that enable the network to extract abundant image features as well as strong fault tolerance and robustness. In addition, ASFM and MFFM can adaptively select important features and ignore interference information when fusing different scale representations. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the superiority of our method compared with state-of-the-art methods.
Single image dehazing is a challenging ill-posed problem due to the severe information degeneration. However, existing deep learning based dehazing methods only adopt clear images as positive samples to guide the training of dehazing network while negative information is unexploited. Moreover, most of them focus on strengthening the dehazing network with an increase of depth and width, leading to a significant requirement of computation and memory. In this paper, we propose a novel contrastive regularization (CR) built upon contrastive learning to exploit both the information of hazy images and clear images as negative and positive samples, respectively. CR ensures that the restored image is pulled to closer to the clear image and pushed to far away from the hazy image in the representation space. Furthermore, considering trade-off between performance and memory storage, we develop a compact dehazing network based on autoencoder-like (AE) framework. It involves an adaptive mixup operation and a dynamic feature enhancement module, which can benefit from preserving information flow adaptively and expanding the receptive field to improve the networks transformation capability, respectively. We term our dehazing network with autoencoder and contrastive regularization as AECR-Net. The extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that our AECR-Net surpass the state-of-the-art approaches. The code is released in https://github.com/GlassyWu/AECR-Net.
The formulation of the hazy image is mainly dominated by the reflected lights and ambient airlight. Existing dehazing methods often ignore the depth cues and fail in distant areas where heavier haze disturbs the visibility. However, we note that the guidance of the depth information for transmission estimation could remedy the decreased visibility as distances increase. In turn, the good transmission estimation could facilitate the depth estimation for hazy images. In this paper, a deep end-to-end model that iteratively estimates image depths and transmission maps is proposed to perform an effective depth prediction for hazy images and improve the dehazing performance with the guidance of depth information. The image depth and transmission map are progressively refined to better restore the dehazed image. Our approach benefits from explicitly modeling the inner relationship of image depth and transmission map, which is especially effective for distant hazy areas. Extensive results on the benchmarks demonstrate that our proposed network performs favorably against the state-of-the-art dehazing methods in terms of depth estimation and haze removal.
Single image dehazing, which aims to recover the clear image solely from an input hazy or foggy image, is a challenging ill-posed problem. Analysing existing approaches, the common key step is to estimate the haze density of each pixel. To this end, various approaches often heuristically designed haze-relevant features. Several recent works also automatically learn the features via directly exploiting Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). However, it may be insufficient to fully capture the intrinsic attributes of hazy images. To obtain effective features for single image dehazing, this paper presents a novel Ranking Convolutional Neural Network (Ranking-CNN). In Ranking-CNN, a novel ranking layer is proposed to extend the structure of CNN so that the statistical and structural attributes of hazy images can be simultaneously captured. By training Ranking-CNN in a well-designed manner, powerful haze-relevant features can be automatically learned from massive hazy image patches. Based on these features, haze can be effectively removed by using a haze density prediction model trained through the random forest regression. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms several previous dehazing approaches on synthetic and real-world benchmark images. Comprehensive analyses are also conducted to interpret the proposed Ranking-CNN from both the theoretical and experimental aspects.
