Electron solid phases of matter are revealed by characteristic vibrational resonances. Sufficiently large magnetic fields can overcome the effects of disorder, leading to a weakly pinned collective mode called the magnetophonon. Consequently, in this regime it is possible to develop a tightly constrained hydrodynamic theory of pinned magnetophonons. The behavior of the magnetophonon resonance across thermal and quantum melting transitions has been experimentally characterized in two-dimensional electron systems. Applying our theory to these transitions we explain several key features of the data: (i) violation of the Fukuyama-Lee sum rule as the transition is approached is directly tied to the non-Lorentzian form taken by the resonance and (ii) the non-Lorentzian shape is caused by characteristic dissipative channels that become especially important close to melting: proliferating dislocations and uncondensed charge carriers.

A sufficiently large perpendicular magnetic field quenches the kinetic (Fermi) energy of an interacting two-dimensional (2D) system of fermions, making them susceptible to the formation of a Wigner solid (WS) phase in which the charged carriers organize themselves in a periodic array in order to minimize their Coulomb repulsion energy. In low-disorder 2D electron systems confined to modulation-doped GaAs heterostructures, signatures of a magnetic-field-induced WS appear at low temperatures and very small Landau level filling factors ($ usimeq1/5$). In dilute GaAs 2D textit{hole} systems, on the other hand, thanks to the larger hole effective mass and the ensuing Landau level mixing, the WS forms at relatively higher fillings ($ usimeq1/3$). Here we report our measurements of the fundamental temperature vs. filling phase diagram for the 2D holes WS-liquid textit{thermal melting}. Moreover, via changing the 2D hole density, we also probe their Landau level mixing vs. filling WS-liquid textit{quantum melting} phase diagram. We find our data to be in good agreement with the results of very recent calculations, although intriguing subtleties remain.
We analyze the quantum melting of two-dimensional Wigner molecules (WM) in confined geometries with distinct symmetries and compare it with corresponding thermal melting. Our findings unfold complementary mechanisms that drive the quantum and thermal crossovers in a WM and show that the symmetry of the confinement plays no significant role in determining the quantum crossover scale $n_X$. This is because the zero-point motion screens the boundary effects within short distances. The phase diagram as a function of thermal and quantum fluctuations determined from independent criteria is unique, and shows melting from the WM to both the classical and quantum liquids. An intriguing signature of weakening liquidity with increasing temperature, $T$, is found in the extreme quantum regime. The crossover is associated with production of defects. However, these defects appear to play distinct roles in driving the quantum and thermal melting. Our study will help comprehending melting in a variety of experimental traps - from quantum dots to complex plasma.
We present the characterization of the band structure of GaAs/AlAs quantum-wire 1D superlattices performed by magnetophonon resonance with pulsed magnetic fields up to 35 T. The samples, generated by the atomic saw method from original quantum-well 2D superlattices, underwent substantial modifications of their energy bands built up on the X-states of the bulk. We have calculated the band structure by a finite element method and we have studied the various miniband structures built up of the masses m_t and m_l of GaAs and AlAs at the point X. From an experimental point of view, the main result is that in the 2D case we observe only resonances when the magnetic field B is applied along the growth axis whereas in the 1D case we obtain resonances in all magnetic field configurations. The analysis of the maxima (or minima for B // E) in the resistivity rho_xy as a function of B allows us to account, qualitatively and semi-quantitatively, for the band structure theoretically expected.
We describe a peculiar fine structure acquired by the in-plane optical phonon at the Gamma-point in graphene when it is brought into resonance with one of the inter-Landau-level transitions in this material. The effect is most pronounced when this la ttice mode (associated with the G-band in graphene Raman spectrum) is in resonance with inter-Landau-level transitions 0 -> (+,1) and (-,1) -> 0, at a magnetic field B_0 ~ 30 T. It can be used to measure the strength of the electron-phonon coupling directly, and its filling-factor dependence can be used experimentally to detect circularly polarized lattice modes.
The Wigner crystal on liquid He accompanies with periodic corrugation of the He surface; dimples. The dynamics of the crystal is coupled with the motion and the deformation of the dimples. Nonlinear phenomena found in AC Corbino conductivity are attributed to the collective sliding of the electrons out of the dimples. In order to inspect the dynamical transition to the sliding state, we have developed a novel experimental method using a so-called t^2 pulse, whose leading and trailing edges change in proportion to the square of time; V = at^2. Since the force exerting upon the crystal is proportional to the time derivative of the input voltage, dV/dt, the t^2-pulsed method is expected to realize a continuous sweep of the driving force, resulting in the real-time observation of the sliding transition. The observed response shows clearly the sliding, revealing that the external force to the crystal determines the sliding transition.
