We demonstrate quantum interference of three photons that are distinguishable in time, by resolving them in the conjugate parameter, frequency. We show that the multiphoton interference pattern in our setup can be manipulated by tuning the relative delays between the photons, without the need for reconfiguring the optical network. Furthermore, we observe that the symmetries of our optical network and the spectral amplitude of the input photons are manifested in the interference pattern. Moreover, we demonstrate time-reversed HOM-like interference in the spectral correlations using time-bin entangled photon pairs. By adding a time-varying dispersion using a phase modulator, our setup can be used to realize dynamically reconfigurable and scalable boson sampling in the time domain as well as frequency-resolved multiboson correlation sampling.

Pairs of photons entangled in their time-frequency degree of freedom are of great interest in quantum optics research and applications, due to their relative ease of generation and their high capacity for encoding information. Here we analyze, both theoretically and experimentally, the behavior of phase-insensitive spectrally-resolved interferences arising from two pairs of time-frequency entangled photons. At its core, this is a multimode entanglement swapping experiment, whereby a spectrally resolved joint measurement on the idler photons from both pairs results in projecting the signal photons onto a Bell state whose form depends on the measurement outcome. Our analysis is a thorough exploration of what can be achieved using time-frequency entanglement and spectrally-resolved Bell-state measurements.
Mid-infrared light scatters much less than shorter wavelengths, allowing greatly enhanced penetration depths for optical imaging techniques such as optical coherence tomography (OCT). However, both detection and broadband sources in the mid-IR are technologically challenging. Interfering entangled photons in a nonlinear interferometer enables sensing with undetected photons making mid-IR sources and detectors obsolete. Here we implement mid-infrared frequency-domain OCT based on ultra-broadband entangled photon pairs. We demonstrate 10 ${mu}$m axial and 20 ${mu}$m lateral resolution 2D and 3D imaging of strongly scattering ceramic and paint samples. Together with $10^6$ times less noise scaled for the same amount of probe light and also vastly reduced footprint and technical complexity this technique can outperform conventional approaches with classical mid-IR light.
The amplified spontaneous emission from a superluminescent diode was frequency doubled in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide crystal. The temporally incoherent radiation of such a superluminescent diode is characterized by a relatively broad spectral bandwidth and thermal-like photon statistics, as the measured degree of second order coherence, g$^{(2)}$(0)=1.9$pm$0.1, indicates. Despite the non-optimized scenario in the spectral domain, we achieve six orders of magnitude higher conversion efficiency than previously reported with truly incoherent light. This is possible by using single spatial mode radiation and quasi phase matched material with a waveguide architecture. This work is a principle step towards efficient frequency conversion of temporally incoherent radiation in one spatial mode to access wavelengths where no radiation from superluminescent diodes is available, especially with tailored quasi phase matched crystals. The frequency doubled light might find use in applications and quantum optics experiments.
Optical quantum technologies such as quantum sensing, quantum cryptography and quantum computation all utilize properties of non-classical light, such as precise photon-number and entangled photon-pair states, to surpass technologies based on the classical light. A common route for obtaining heralded single photons is spontaneous four-wave mixing in optical fibers, allowing for a well-defined spatial mode, for high efficiency integration into optical fiber networks. These fibers are typically pumped using large, commercial, pulsed lasers requiring high-power (~10 W) pump lasers and are limited to ~MHz repetition rate. Here we propose a cost-efficient, compact and mobile alternative. Photon pairs at 660 nm and 960 nm will be created using four-wave mixing in commercial birefringent optical fiber, pumped using transform limited picosecond pulses with GHz repetition rates derived from a 785 nm CW laser diode using cavity-enhanced optical frequency comb generation. The pulses are predicted to have average power of 275 mW, a peak power of >40 W, and predicted photon yield of >2000 pairs detected per second. This design will be later utilized to implement a quantum illumination scheme based on a coincidence count between idler and signal photons - instead of joint measurement between signal and idler. This will allow for quantum advantage over classic LIDAR without the requirement for maintaining an interferometric stability in free space.
Graph representations are a powerful concept for solving complex problems across natural science, as patterns of connectivity can give rise to a multitude of emergent phenomena. Graph-based approaches have proven particularly fruitful in quantum communication and quantum search algorithms in highly branched quantum networks. Here we introduce a new paradigm for the direct experimental realization of excitation dynamics associated with three-dimensional networks by exploiting the hybrid action of spatial and polarization degrees of freedom of photon pairs in complex waveguide circuits with tailored birefringence. This novel testbed for the experimental exploration of multi-particle quantum walks on complex, highly connected graphs paves the way towards exploiting the applicative potential of fermionic dynamics in integrated quantum photonics.
