We study the analytic properties of the t Hooft coupling expansion of the beta-function at the leading nontrivial large-$N_f$ order for QED, QCD, Super QED and Super QCD. For each theory, the t Hooft coupling expansion is convergent. We discover that an analysis of the expansion coefficients to roughly 30 orders is required to establish the radius of convergence accurately, and to characterize the (logarithmic) nature of the first singularity. We study summations of the beta-function expansion at order $1/N_f$, and identify the physical origin of the singularities in terms of iterated bubble diagrams. We find a common analytic structure across these theories, with important technical differences between supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric theories. We also discuss the expected structure at higher orders in the $1/N_f$ expansion, which will be in the future accessible with the methods presented in this work, meaning without the need for resumming the perturbative series. Understanding the structure of the large-$N_f$ expansion is an essential step towards determining the ultraviolet fate of asymptotically non-free gauge theories.
We determine the $1/N_f^2$ and $1/N_f^3$ contributions to the QED beta function stemming from the closed set of nested diagrams. At order $1/N_f^2$ we discover a new logarithmic branch-cut closer to the origin when compared to the $1/N_f$ results. The same singularity location appears at $1/N_f^3$, and these correspond to a UV renormalon singularity in the finite part of the photon two-point function.
We present calculations of certain limits of scheme-independent series expansions for the anomalous dimensions of gauge-invariant fermion bilinear operators and for the derivative of the beta function at an infrared fixed point in SU($N_c$) gauge theories with fermions transforming according to two different representations. We first study a theory with $N_f$ fermions in the fundamental representation and $N_{f}$ fermions in the adjoint or symmetric or antisymmetric rank-2 tensor representation, in the limit $N_c to infty$, $N_f to infty$ with $N_f/N_c$ fixed and finite. We then study the $N_c to infty$ limit of a theory with fermions in the adjoint and rank-2 symmetric or antisymmetric tensor representations.
We study the domain walls in hot $4$-D $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory and QCD(adj), with $n_f$ Weyl flavors. We find that the $k$-wall worldvolume theory is $2$-D QCD with gauge group $SU(N-k)times SU(k) times U(1)$ and Dirac fermions charged under $U(1)$ and transforming in the bi-fundamental representation of the nonabelian factors. We show that the DW theory has a $1$-form $mathbb Z_{N}^{(1)}$ center symmetry and a $0$-form $mathbb Z_{2Nn_f}^{dchi}$ discrete chiral symmetry, with a mixed t Hooft anomaly consistent with bulk/wall anomaly inflow. We argue that $mathbb Z_{N}^{(1)}$ is broken on the wall, and hence, Wilson loops obey the perimeter law. The breaking of the worldvolume center symmetry implies that bulk $p$-strings can end on the wall, a phenomenon first discovered using string-theoretic constructions. We invoke $2$-D bosonization and gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models to suggest that $mathbb Z_{2Nn_f}^{dchi}$ is also broken in the IR, which implies that the $0$-form/$1$-form mixed t Hooft anomaly in the gapped $k$-wall theory is saturated by a topological quantum field theory. We also find interesting parallels between the physics of high-temperature domain walls studied here and domain walls between chiral symmetry breaking vacua in the zero temperature phase of the theory (studied earlier in the semiclassically calculable small spatial circle regime), arising from the similar mode of saturation of the relevant t Hooft anomalies.
Local formulations of quantum field theory provide a powerful framework in which non-perturbative aspects of QCD can be analysed. Here we report on how this approach can be used to elucidate the general analytic features of QCD propagators, and why this is relevant for understanding confinement.
We study $mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric three-dimensional Quantum Electrodynamics with $N_f$ two-component fermions. Due to the infra-red (IR) softening of the photon, $ep$-scalar and photino propagators, the theory flows to an interacting fixed point deep in the IR, $p_E ll e^2 N_f/8$, where $p_E$ is the euclidean momentum and $e$ the electric charge. At next-to-leading order in the $1/N_f$-expansion, we find that the flow of the dimensionless effective coupling constant $overline{al}$ is such that: $overline{al} ra 8/big(N_f ,(1+C/N_f)big) approx (8/N_f)(1-0.4317/N_f)$ where $C= 2,(12-pi^2)/pi^2$. Hence, the non-trivial IR fixed point is stable with respect to quantum corrections. Various properties of the theory are explored and related via a mapping to the ones of a $mathcal{N}=1$ model of super-graphene. In particular, we derive the interaction correction coefficient to the optical conductivity of super-graphene, $C_{rm sg} = (12-pi^2)/(2pi) = 0.3391$, which is six times larger than in the non-supersymmetric case, $C_{rm g} = (92-9pi^2)/(18pi) = 0.0561$.
