The implementation of connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies enables a novel computational framework to deliver real-time control actions that optimize travel time, energy, and safety. Hardware is an integral part of any practical implementation of CAVs, and as such, it should be incorporated in any validation method. However, high costs associated with full scale, field testing of CAVs have proven to be a significant barrier. In this paper, we present the implementation of a decentralized control framework, which was developed previously, in a scaled-city using robotic CAVs, and discuss the implications of CAVs on travel time. Gadgets helping the disabled, especially blind that are in least accessibility of information, use acoustic methods that can cause stress to ear and infringe users privacy. Even if some project uses embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) into the sidewalk for blinds free walking, the tag memory design is not specified for buildings and road conditions. This paper suggested allocation scheme of RFID tag referring to EPCglobal SGLN, tactile method for conveying information, and use of lithium battery as power source with solar cells as an alternative. Results have shown independent mobility, accidents prevention, stress relief and satisfied factors in terms of cost and human usability.
Data-driven approaches have been applied to many problems in urban computing. However, in the research community, such approaches are commonly studied under data from limited sources, and are thus unable to characterize the complexity of urban data coming from multiple entities and the correlations among them. Consequently, an inclusive and multifaceted dataset is necessary to facilitate more extensive studies on urban computing. In this paper, we present CityNet, a multi-modal urban dataset containing data from 7 cities, each of which coming from 3 data sources. We first present the generation process of CityNet as well as its basic properties. In addition, to facilitate the use of CityNet, we carry out extensive machine learning experiments, including spatio-temporal predictions, transfer learning, and reinforcement learning. The experimental results not only provide benchmarks for a wide range of tasks and methods, but also uncover internal correlations among cities and tasks within CityNet that, with adequate leverage, can improve performances on various tasks. With the benchmarking results and the correlations uncovered, we believe that CityNet can contribute to the field of urban computing by supporting research on many advanced topics.
The advancement of various research sectors such as Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning, Data Mining, Big Data, and Communication Technology has shed some light in transforming an urban city integrating the aforementioned techniques to a commonly known term - Smart City. With the emergence of smart city, plethora of data sources have been made available for wide variety of applications. The common technique for handling multiple data sources is data fusion, where it improves data output quality or extracts knowledge from the raw data. In order to cater evergrowing highly complicated applications, studies in smart city have to utilize data from various sources and evaluate their performance based on multiple aspects. To this end, we introduce a multi-perspectives classification of the data fusion to evaluate the smart city applications. Moreover, we applied the proposed multi-perspectives classification to evaluate selected applications in each domain of the smart city. We conclude the paper by discussing potential future direction and challenges of data fusion integration.
In this paper, we investigate the problem of a last-mile delivery service that selects up to $N$ available vehicles to deliver $M$ packages from a centralized depot to $M$ delivery locations. The objective of the last-mile delivery service is to jointly maximize customer satisfaction (minimize delivery time) and minimize operating cost (minimize total travel time) by selecting the optimal number of vehicles to perform the deliveries. We model this as an assignment (vehicles to packages) and path planning (determining the delivery order and route) problem, which is equivalent to the NP-hard multiple traveling salesperson problem. We propose a scalable heuristic algorithm, which sacrifices some optimality to achieve a reasonable computational cost for a high number of packages. The algorithm combines hierarchical clustering with a greedy search. To validate our approach, we compare the results of our simulation to experiments in a $1$:$25$ scale robotic testbed for future mobility systems.
Electricity is an essential comfort to support our daily activities. With the competitive increase and energy costs by the industry, new values and opportunities for delivering electricity to customers are produced. One of these new opportunities is electric vehicles. With the arrival of electric vehicles, various challenges and opportunities are being presented in the electric power system worldwide. For example, under the traditional electric power billing scheme, electric power has to be consumed where it is needed so that end-users could not charge their electric vehicles at different points (e.g. a relatives house) if this the correct user is not billed (this due to the high consumption of electrical energy that makes it expensive). To achieve electric mobility, they must solve new challenges, such as the smart metering of energy consumption and the cybersecurity of these measurements. The present work shows a study of the different smart metering technologies that use blockchain and other security mechanisms to achieve e-mobility.
