Deep neural networks (DNN) have been a de facto standard for nowadays biometric recognition solutions. A serious, but still overlooked problem in these DNN-based recognition systems is their vulnerability against adversarial attacks. Adversarial attacks can easily cause the output of a DNN system to greatly distort with only tiny changes in its input. Such distortions can potentially lead to an unexpected match between a valid biometric and a synthetic one constructed by a strategic attacker, raising security issue. In this work, we show how this issue can be resolved by learning robust biometric features through a deep, information-theoretic framework, which builds upon the recent deep variational information bottleneck method but is carefully adapted to biometric recognition tasks. Empirical evaluation demonstrates that our method not only offers stronger robustness against adversarial attacks but also provides better recognition performance over state-of-the-art approaches.

Surrogate task based methods have recently shown great promise for unsupervised image anomaly detection. However, there is no guarantee that the surrogate tasks share the consistent optimization direction with anomaly detection. In this paper, we return to a direct objective function for anomaly detection with information theory, which maximizes the distance between normal and anomalous data in terms of the joint distribution of images and their representation. Unfortunately, this objective function is not directly optimizable under the unsupervised setting where no anomalous data is provided during training. Through mathematical analysis of the above objective function, we manage to decompose it into four components. In order to optimize in an unsupervised fashion, we show that, under the assumption that distribution of the normal and anomalous data are separable in the latent space, its lower bound can be considered as a function which weights the trade-off between mutual information and entropy. This objective function is able to explain why the surrogate task based methods are effective for anomaly detection and further point out the potential direction of improvement. Based on this object function we introduce a novel information theoretic framework for unsupervised image anomaly detection. Extensive experiments have demonstrated that the proposed framework significantly outperforms several state-of-the-arts on multiple benchmark data sets.
In this paper, we propose an end-to-end multi-task neural network called FetalNet with an attention mechanism and stacked module for spatio-temporal fetal ultrasound scan video analysis. Fetal biometric measurement is a standard examination during pregnancy used for the fetus growth monitoring and estimation of gestational age and fetal weight. The main goal in fetal ultrasound scan video analysis is to find proper standard planes to measure the fetal head, abdomen and femur. Due to natural high speckle noise and shadows in ultrasound data, medical expertise and sonographic experience are required to find the appropriate acquisition plane and perform accurate measurements of the fetus. In addition, existing computer-aided methods for fetal US biometric measurement address only one single image frame without considering temporal features. To address these shortcomings, we propose an end-to-end multi-task neural network for spatio-temporal ultrasound scan video analysis to simultaneously localize, classify and measure the fetal body parts. We propose a new encoder-decoder segmentation architecture that incorporates a classification branch. Additionally, we employ an attention mechanism with a stacked module to learn salient maps to suppress irrelevant US regions and efficient scan plane localization. We trained on the fetal ultrasound video comes from routine examinations of 700 different patients. Our method called FetalNet outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods in both classification and segmentation in fetal ultrasound video recordings.
Current orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithms calculate the correlation between two vectors using the inner product operation and minimize the mean square error, which are both suboptimal when there are non-Gaussian noises or outliers in the observation data. To overcome these problems, a new OMP algorithm is developed based on the information theoretic learning (ITL), which is built on the following new techniques: (1) an ITL-based correlation (ITL-Correlation) is developed as a new similarity measure which can better exploit higher-order statistics of the data, and is robust against many different types of noise and outliers in a sparse representation framework; (2) a non-second order statistic measurement and minimization method is developed to improve the robustness of OMP by overcoming the limitation of Gaussianity inherent in cost function based on second-order moments. The experimental results on both simulated and real-world data consistently demonstrate the superiority of the proposed OMP algorithm in data recovery, image reconstruction, and classification.
Pimentel et al. (2020) recently analysed probing from an information-theoretic perspective. They argue that probing should be seen as approximating a mutual information. This led to the rather unintuitive conclusion that representations encode exactly the same information about a target task as the original sentences. The mutual information, however, assumes the true probability distribution of a pair of random variables is known, leading to unintuitive results in settings where it is not. This paper proposes a new framework to measure what we term Bayesian mutual information, which analyses information from the perspective of Bayesian agents -- allowing for more intuitive findings in scenarios with finite data. For instance, under Bayesian MI we have that data can add information, processing can help, and information can hurt, which makes it more intuitive for machine learning applications. Finally, we apply our framework to probing where we believe Bayesian mutual information naturally operationalises ease of extraction by explicitly limiting the available background knowledge to solve a task.
Recognizing car license plates in natural scene images is an important yet still challenging task in realistic applications. Many existing approaches perform well for license plates collected under constrained conditions, eg, shooting in frontal and horizontal view-angles and under good lighting conditions. However, their performance drops significantly in an unconstrained environment that features rotation, distortion, occlusion, blurring, shading or extreme dark or bright conditions. In this work, we propose a robust framework for license plate recognition in the wild. It is composed of a tailored CycleGAN model for license plate image generation and an elaborate designed image-to-sequence network for plate recognition. On one hand, the CycleGAN based plate generation engine alleviates the exhausting human annotation work. Massive amount of training data can be obtained with a more balanced character distribution and various shooting conditions, which helps to boost the recognition accuracy to a large extent. On the other hand, the 2D attentional based license plate recognizer with an Xception-based CNN encoder is capable of recognizing license plates with different patterns under various scenarios accurately and robustly. Without using any heuristics rule or post-processing, our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on four public datasets, which demonstrates the generality and robustness of our framework. Moreover, we released a new license plate dataset, named CLPD, with 1200 images from all 31 provinces in mainland China. The dataset can be available from: https://github.com/wangpengnorman/CLPD_dataset.
