A hallmark of a thermodynamic phase transition is the qualitative change of system thermodynamic properties such as energy and heat capacity. On the other hand, no phase transition is thought to operate in the supercritical state of matter and, for this reason, it was believed that supercritical thermodynamic properties vary smoothly and without any qualitative changes. Here, we perform extensive molecular dynamics simulations in a wide temperature range and find that a deeply supercritical state is thermodynamically heterogeneous, as witnessed by different temperature dependence of energy, heat capacity and its derivatives at low and high temperature. The evidence comes from three different methods of analysis, two of which are model-independent. We propose a new definition of the relative width of the thermodynamic crossover and calculate it to be in the fairly narrow relative range of 13-20%. On the basis of our results, we relate the crossover to the supercritical Frenkel line.

We compare the spatial correlations of bond-breaking events and bond-orientational relaxation in a model two-dimensional liquid undergoing Newtonian dynamics. We find that the relaxation time of the bond-breaking correlation function is much longer than the relaxation time of the bond-orientational correlation function and self-intermediate scattering function. However, the relaxation time of the bond-orientational correlation function increases faster with decreasing temperature than the relaxation time of the bond-breaking correlation function and the self-intermediate scattering function. Moreover, the dynamic correlation length that characterizes the size of correlated bond-orientational relaxation grows faster with decreasing temperature than the dynamic correlation length that characterizes the size of correlated bond-breaking events. We also examine the ensemble-dependent and ensemble-independent dynamic susceptibilities for both bond-breaking correlations and bond-orientational correlations. We find that for both correlations, the ensemble-dependent and ensemble-independent susceptibilities exhibit a maximum at nearly the same time, and this maximum occurs at a time slightly shorter than the peak position of the dynamic correlation length.
The well-known classical nucleation theory (CNT) for the free energy barrier towards formation of a nucleus of critical size of the new stable phase within the parent metastable phase fails to take into account the influence of other metastable phases having density/order intermediate between the parent metastable phase and the final stable phase. This lacuna can be more serious than capillary approximation or spherical shape assumption made in CNT. This issue is particularly significant in ice nucleation because liquid water shows rich phase diagram consisting of two (high and low density) liquid phases in supercooled state. The explanations of thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies of supercooled water often invoke the possible influence of a liquid-liquid transition between two metastable liquid phases. To investigate both the role of thermodynamic anomalies and presence of distinct metastable liquid phases in supercooled water on ice nucleation, we employ density functional theoretical approach to find nucleation free energy barrier in different regions of phase diagram. The theory makes a number of striking predictions, such as a dramatic lowering of nucleation barrier due to presence of a metastable intermediate phase and crossover in the dependence of free energy barrier on temperature near liquid-liquid critical point. These predictions can be tested by computer simulations as well as by controlled experiments.

The equilibrium properties of a Janus fluid made of two-face particles confined to a one-dimensional channel are revisited. The exact Gibbs free energy for a finite number of particles $N$ is exactly derived for both quenched and annealed realizations. It is proved that the results for both classes of systems tend in the thermodynamic limit ($Ntoinfty$) to a common expression recently derived (Maestre M A G and Santos A 2020 J Stat Mech 063217). The theoretical finite-size results are particularized to the Kern--Frenkel model and confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations for quenched and (both biased and unbiased) annealed systems.
For binary fluid mixtures of spherical particles in which the two species are sufficiently different in size, the dominant wavelength of oscillations of the pair correlation functions is predicted to change from roughly the diameter of the large species to that of the small species along a sharp crossover line in the phase diagram [C. Grodon, M. Dijkstra, R. Evans & R. Roth, J.Chem.Phys. 121, 7869 (2004)]. Using particle-resolved colloid experiments in 3d we demonstrate that crossover exists and that its location in the phase diagram is in quantitative agreement with the results of both theory and our Monte-Carlo simulations. In contrast with previous work [J. Baumgartl, R. Dullens, M. Dijkstra, R. Roth & C. Bechinger, Phys.Rev.Lett. 98, 198303 (2007)], where a correspondence was drawn between crossover and percolation of both species, in our 3d study we find that structural crossover is unrelated to percolation.
