We give Macaulay2 algorithms for computing mixed multiplicities of ideals in a polynomial ring. This enables us to find mixed volumes of lattice polytopes and sectional Milnor numbers of a hypersurface with an isolated singularity. The algorithms use the defining equations of the multi-Rees algebra of ideals. We achieve this by generalizing a recent result of David A. Cox, Kuei-Nuan Lin, and Gabriel Sosa in. One can also use a Macaulay2 command `reesIdeal to calculate the defining equations of the Rees algebra. We compare the computation time of our scripts with the scripts already available.

In this paper we define and explore properties of mixed multiplicities of (not necessarily Noetherian) filtrations of $m_R$-primary ideals in a Noetherian local ring $R$, generalizing the classical theory for $m_R$-primary ideals. We construct a real polynomial whose coefficients give the mixed multiplicities. This polynomial exists if and only if the dimension of the nilradical of the completion of $R$ is less than the dimension of $R$, which holds for instance if $R$ is excellent and reduced. We show that many of the classical theorems for mixed multiplicities of $m_R$-primary ideals hold for filtrations, including the famous Minkowski inequalities of Teissier, and Rees and Sharp.
The theory of mixed multiplicities of filtrations by $m$-primary ideals in a ring is introduced in a recent paper by Cutkosky, Sarkar and Srinivasan. In this paper, we consider the positivity of mixed multiplicities of filtrations. We show that the mixed multiplicities of filtrations must be nonnegative real numbers and give examples to show that they could be zero or even irrational. When $R$ is analytically irreducible, and $mathcal I(1),ldots,mathcal I(r)$ are filtrations of $R$ by $m_R$-primary ideals, we show that all of the mixed multiplicities $e_R(mathcal I(1)^{[d_1]},ldots,mathcal I(r)^{[d_r]};R)$ are positive if and only if the ordinary multiplicities $e_R(mathcal I(i);R)$ for $1le ile r$ are positive. We extend this to modules and prove a simple characterization of when the mixed multiplicities are positive or zero on a finitely generated module.
We address the description of the tropicalization of families of rational varieties under parametrizations with prescribed support, via curve valuations. We recover and extend results by Sturmfels, Tevelev and Yu for generic coefficients, considering rational parametrizations with non-trivial denominator. The advantage of our point of view is that it can be generalized to deal with non-generic parametrizations. We provide a detailed analysis of the degree of the closed image, based on combinatorial conditions on the relative positions of the supports of the polynomials defining the parametrization. We obtain a new formula and finer bounds on the degree, when the supports of the polynomials are different. We also present a new formula and bounds for the order at the origin in case the closed image is a hypersurface.
At the heart of convex geometry lies the observation that the volume of convex bodies behaves as a polynomial. Many geometric inequalities may be expressed in terms of the coefficients of this polynomial, called mixed volumes. Among the deepest results of this theory is the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality, which subsumes many known inequalities as special cases. The aim of this note is to give new proofs of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality and of its matrix counterpart, Alexandrovs inequality for mixed discriminants, that appear conceptually and technically simpler than earlier proofs and clarify the underlying structure. Our main observation is that these inequalities can be reduced by the spectral theorem to certain trivial `Bochner formulas.

We establish new obstruction results to the existence of Riemannian metrics on tori satisfying mixed bounds on both their sectional and Ricci curvatures. More precisely, from Lohkamps theorem, every torus of dimension at least three admits Riemannian metrics with negative Ricci curvature. We show that the sectional curvature of these metrics cannot be bounded from above by an arbitrarily small positive constant. In particular, if the Ricci curvature of a Riemannian torus is negative, bounded away from zero, then there exist some planar directions in this torus where the sectional curvature is positive, bounded away from zero. All constants are explicit and depend only on the dimension of the torus.
