Residual pump peak in fiber-based supercontinuum, as a general phenomenon, limits its practical application. We report a novel supercontinuum generation (SCG) in a conventional highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) through multiple coherent pump technique, which eliminates the residual pump peak existed in conventional SCG. The multiple coherent pump technique is realized by double bound-state solitons achieved from a homemade modelocked fiber laser. We further compare the SCGs pumped by conventional bound-state soliton and single soliton. It confirms that the effective elimination of the residual pump peak in supercontinuum owes to higher transferring efficiency of the pump energy to new generated frequencies in the multiple coherent pump scheme. The use of multiple coherent pump scheme, i.e., double bound-state solitons, provides a new, simple and promising method to obtain flat supercontinuum source.

We demonstrate non-adiabatic charge pumping utilizing a sequence of coherent oscillations between a superconducting island and two reservoirs. Our method, based on pulsed quantum state manipulations, allows to speedup charge pumping to a rate which is limited by the coupling between the island and the reservoirs given by the Josephson energy. Our experimental and theoretical studies also demonstrate that relaxation can be employed to reset the pump and avoid accumulation of errors due to non-ideal control pulses.

High-Q microresonator has been suggested a promising platform for optical frequency comb generation, via dissipative soliton formation. To achieve a higher Q and obtain the necessary anomalous dispersion, $Si_3N_4$ microresonators made of multi-mode waveguides were previously implemented. However, coupling between different transverse mode families in the multi-mode waveguides results in periodic disruption of dispersion and quality factor, introducing perturbation to dissipative soliton formation and amplitude modulation to the corresponding spectrum. Careful choice of pump wavelength to avoid the mode crossing region is thus critical in conventional $Si_3N_4$ microresonators. Here, we report a novel design of $Si_3N_4$ microresonator such that single mode operation, high quality factor, and anomalous dispersion are attained simultaneously. The microresonator is consisted of uniform single mode waveguides in the semi-circle region, to eliminate bending induced mode coupling, and adiabatically tapered waveguides in the straight region, to avoid excitation of higher order modes. The intrinsic Q of the microresonator reaches $1.36 times 10^6$ while the GVD remains to be anomalous at $-50 fs^2/mm$. We demonstrate, with this novel microresonator, broadband phase-locked Kerr frequency combs with flat and smooth spectra can be generated by pumping at any resonances in the optical C-band.
The organic terahertz (THz) generation crystal BNA has recently gained traction as a valuable source to produce broadband THz pulses. Even when pumped with 800-nm light, thin BNA crystals can produce relatively high electric fields with frequency components out to 5 THz. However, the THz output when pumped with 800-nm light is limited by the damage threshold of the organic crystal. Here we report that the damage threshold of BNA can be significantly improved by physically bonding BNA to a high-thermal conductivity sapphire window. When pumped with 800-nm light from an amplified Ti:sapphire laser system, our bonded BNA (BNA-sapphire) generates 2.5 times higher electric field strengths compared to bare BNA crystals. We characterize the average damage threshold for bare BNA and BNA-sapphire, measure peak-to-peak electric field strengths and THz waveforms, and determine the nonlinear transmission in BNA. Pumping BNA-sapphire with 800-nm light results in peak-to-peak electric fields exceeding 1 MV/cm, with strong broadband frequency components from 0.5-5 THz. Our BNA-sapphire THz source is a promising alternative to tilted pulse front LiNbO3 THz sources, which will enable many research groups without optical parametric amplifiers to perform high-field, broadband THz spectroscopy.
High harmonic generation (HHG) is an extreme nonlinear frequency up-conversion process during which extremely short duration optical pulses at very short wavelengths are emitted. A major concern of HHG is the small conversion efficiency at the single emitter level. Thus ensuring that the emission at different locations are emitted in phase is crucial. At high pump intensities it is impossible to phase match the radiation without reverting to ordered modulations of either the medium or the pump field itself, a technique known as Quasi-Phase-Matching (QPM). To date, demonstrated QPM techniques of HHG were usually complicated and/or lacked tunability. Here we demonstrate experimentally a relatively simple, highly and easily tunable QPM technique by using a structured pump beam made of the interference of different spatial optical modes. With this technique we demonstrate on-the-fly, tunable quasi-phase-matching of harmonic orders 25 to 39 with up to 30 fold enhancement of the emission.
The Bell basis, a set of maximally entangled biphoton state, is a critical prerequisite towards quantum information processing, and many quantum applications have highlighted the requirement for the manipulation of high-dimensional Bell basis. While the Bell states can be created by using ingenious single-photon quantum gates, its implementation complexity in higher dimensions is significantly increased. Here we present an elaborate approach to show that the adaptive pump modulation enable the efficient preparation of Bell basis in arbitrary-dimensional Hilbert space. A complete set of four-dimensional orbital angular momentum Bell states are experimentally created, yielding high fidelities for certifying the entanglement dimensionality. Our strategy can be simply generalized to prepare more complex forms of quantum states even exploiting other physical degrees of freedom. Also, it can facilitate the use of high-dimensional entanglement in a variety of quantum protocols, in particular those requiring quantum dense coding.
