The compression of SH$_2$ and its subsequent decomposition to SH$_3$, presumably in a cubic Im$overline{3}$m structure, has lead to the discovery of conventional superconductivity with the highest measured and confirmed $T_c$ to date, 203 K at 160 GPa. Recent theoretical studies suggest that a mixture of S with other elements of the chalcogen group could improve the superconducting temperature. Here, we present a detailed analysis of the thermodynamic properties of S and Se mixtures in the bcc lattice with Im$overline{3}$m symmetry using a cluster expansion technique to explore the phase diagram of S$_x$Se$_{1-x}$H$_{3}$. In contrast to earlier reports, we find that S$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$H$_3$ is not stable in the pressure range between 150-200 GPa. However, phases at compositions S$_{0.2}$Se$_{0.8}$H$_3$, S$_{0.overline{3}}$Se$_{0.overline{6}}$H$_3$, and S$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$H$_3$ are stable at 200 GPa, while additional phases at S$_{0.25}$Se$_{0.75}$H$_3$ and S$_{0.75}$Se$_{0.25}$H$_3$ are accessible at lower pressures. Electron-phonon calculations show that the values of $T_c$ are consistently lower for all ternary phases, indicating that mixtures of S and Se with H might not be a viable route towards compounds with improved superconducting properties.

We have investigated the optical properties of thin films of topological insulators Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$, Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ and their alloys Bi$_2$(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_3$ on BaF$_{2}$ substrates by a combination of infrared ellipsometry and reflectivity in the energy range from 0.06 to 6.5 eV. For the onset of interband absorption in Bi$_2$Se$_3$, after the correction for the Burstein-Moss effect, we find the value of direct bandgap of $215pm10$ meV at 10 K. Our data supports the picture that Bi$_2$Se$_3$ has a direct band gap located at the $Gamma$ point in the Brillouin zone and that the valence band reaches up to the Dirac point and has the shape of a downward oriented paraboloid, i.e. without a camel-back structure. In Bi$_2$Te$_3$, the onset of strong direct interband absorption at 10 K is at a similar energy of about 200 meV, with a weaker additional feature at about 170 meV. Our data support the recent GW band structure calculations suggesting that the direct interband transition does not occur at the $Gamma$ point but near the Z-F line of the Brillouin zone. In the Bi$_2$(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_3$ alloy, the energy of the onset of direct interband transitions exhibits a maximum near $x=0.3$ (i.e. the composition of Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se), suggesting that the crossover of the direct interband transitions between the two points in the Brillouin zone occurs close to this composition.

The BCS-BEC crossover from strongly overlapping Cooper pairs to non-overlapping composite bosons in the strong coupling limit has been a long-standing issue of interacting many-body fermion systems. Recently, FeSe semimetal with hole and electron bands emerged as a high-$T_{rm c}$ superconductor located in the BCS-BEC crossover regime, owing to its very small Fermi energies. In FeSe, however, an ordinary BCS-like heat-capacity jump is observed at $T_{rm c}$, posing a fundamental question on the characteristics of the BCS-BEC crossover. Here we report on high-resolution heat capacity, magnetic torque, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$. Upon entering the tetragonal phase at $x>0.17$, where nematic order is suppressed, $T_{rm c}$ discontinuously decreases. In this phase, highly non-mean-field behaviors consistent with BEC-like pairing are found in the thermodynamic quantities with giant superconducting fluctuations extending far above $T_{rm c}$, implying the change of pairing nature. Moreover, the pseudogap formation, which is expected in BCS-BEC crossover of single-band superconductors, is not observed in the tunneling spectra. These results illuminate highly unusual features of the superconducting states in the crossover regime with multiband electronic structure and competing electronic instabilities.
Neutron scattering has played a significant role in characterizing magnetic and structural correlations in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ and their connections with superconductivity. Here we review several key aspects of the physics of iron chalcogenide superconductors where neutron studies played a key role. These topics include the phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$, where the doping-dependence of structural transitions can be understood from a mapping to the anisotropic random field Ising model. We then discuss orbital-selective Mott physics in the Fe chalcogenide series, where temperature-dependent magnetism in the parent material provided one of the earliest cases for orbital-selective correlation effects in a Hunds metal. Finally, we elaborate on the character of local magnetic correlations revealed by neutron scattering, its dependence on temperature and composition, and the connections to nematicity and superconductivity.

The challenge of parasitic bulk doping in Bi-based 3D topological insulator materials is still omnipresent, especially when preparing samples by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Here, we present a heterostructure approach for epitaxial BSTS growth. A thin n-type Bi$_2$Se$_3$ (BS) layer is used as an epitaxial and electrostatic seed which drastically improves the crystalline and electronic quality and reproducibility of the sample properties. In heterostructures of BS with p-type (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$(Te$_{1-y}$Se$_y$)$_3$ (BSTS) we demonstrate intrinsic band bending effects to tune the electronic properties solely by adjusting the thickness of the respective layer. The analysis of weak anti-localization features in the magnetoconductance indicates a separation of top and bottom conduction layers with increasing BSTS thickness. By temperature- and gate-dependent transport measurements, we show that the thin BS seed layer can be completely depleted within the heterostructure and demonstrate electrostatic tuning of the bands via a back-gate throughout the whole sample thickness.
After our first discovery of superconductivity (SC) with $T_C$=3.7 K in TlNi$_2$Se$_2$, we grew successfully a series of TlNi$_2$Se$_{2-x}$S$_x$ (0.0 $leq$ x $leq$2.0) single crystals. The measurements of resistivity, susceptibility and specific heat were carried out. We found that SC with $T_C$=2.3 K also emerges in TlNi$_2$S$_2$ crystal, which appears to involve heavy electrons with an effective mass $m^*$=13$sim$25 $m_b$, as inferred from the normal state electronic specific heat and the upper critical field, $H_{C2}(T)$. It was found that the $T_C$ and superconducting volume fraction in TlNi$_2$Se$_{2-x}$S$_x$ crystals changes with the disorder degree induced by the partial substitution of S for Se, which is characterized by the residual resistivity ratio (textit{RRR}). The effect of the disorder on SC may provide some information for understanding the mechanism of SC in this new Ni-chalcogenide system.
