This paper studies the controllability of networked multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) systems, in which the network topology is weighted and directed, and the nodes are heterogeneous higher-dimensional linear time-invariant (LTI) dynamical systems. The primary objective is to search for controllability criteria beyond those already known for homogeneous networks. The focus is on the effects of the network topology, node dynamics, external control inputs, as well as the inner interactions on the network controllability. It is found that a network of heterogeneous systems can be controllable even if the corresponding homogeneous network topology is uncontrollable. The finding thus unravels another fundamental property that affects the network controllability---the heterogeneity of the node dynamics. A necessary and sufficient condition is derived for the controllability of heterogeneous networked MIMO LTI systems. For some typical cases, necessary and/or sufficient controllability conditions are specified and presented on the node dynamics, inner interactions, as well as the network topology.

In this paper, we consider the state controllability of networked systems, where the network topology is directed and weighted and the nodes are higher-dimensional linear time-invariant (LTI) dynamical systems. We investigate how the network topology, the node-system dynamics, the external control inputs, and the inner interactions affect the controllability of a networked system, and show that for a general networked multi-input/multi-output (MIMO) system: 1) the controllability of the overall network is an integrated result of the aforementioned relevant factors, which cannot be decoupled into the controllability of individual node-systems and the properties solely determined by the network topology, quite different from the familiar notion of consensus or formation controllability; 2) if the network topology is uncontrollable by external inputs, then the networked system with identical nodes will be uncontrollable, even if it is structurally controllable; 3) with a controllable network topology, controllability and observability of the nodes together are necessary for the controllability of the networked systems under some mild conditions, but nevertheless they are not sufficient. For a networked system with single-input/single-output (SISO) LTI nodes, we present precise necessary and sufficient conditions for the controllability of a general network topology.
The existing results on controllability of multi-agents networks are mostly based on homogeneous nodes. This paper focuses on controllability of heterogeneous multi-agent networks, where the agents are modeled as two types. One type is that the agents are of the same high-order dynamics, and the interconnection topologies of the information flow in different orders are supposed to be different. It is proved that a heterogeneous-topology network is controllable if and only if the first-order information topology is leader-follower connected, and there exists a Laplacian matrix, which is a linear combination of the Laplacian matrices of each order information, whose corresponding topology is controllable. The other type is that the agents are of generic linear dynamics, and the dynamics are supposed to be heterogeneous. A necessary and sufficient condition for controllability of heterogeneous-dynamic networks is that each agent contains a controllable dynamic part, and the interconnection topology of the network is leader-follower connected. If some dynamics of the agents are not controllable, the controllability between the agents and the whole network is also studied by introducing the concept of eigenvector-uncontrollable. Different illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results in this paper.
This paper deals with strong structural controllability of linear structured systems in which the system matrices are given by zero/nonzero/arbitrary pattern matrices. Instead of assuming that the nonzero and arbitrary entries of the system matrices can take their values completely independently, this paper allows equality constraints on these entries, in the sense that {em a priori} given entries in the system matrices are restricted to take arbitrary but identical values. To formalize this general class of structured systems, we introduce the concepts of colored pattern matrices and colored structured systems. The main contribution of this paper is that it generalizes both the classical results on strong structural controllability of structured systems as well as recent results on controllability of systems defined on colored graphs. In this paper, we will establish both algebraic and graph-theoretic conditions for strong structural controllability of this more general class of structured systems.
This paper studies model order reduction of multi-agent systems consisting of identical linear passive subsystems, where the interconnection topology is characterized by an undirected weighted graph. Balanced truncation based on a pair of specifically selected generalized Gramians is implemented on the asymptotically stable part of the full-order network model, which leads to a reduced-order system preserving the passivity of each subsystem. Moreover, it is proven that there exists a coordinate transformation to convert the resulting reduced-order model to a state-space model of Laplacian dynamics. Thus, the proposed method simultaneously reduces the complexity of the network structure and individual agent dynamics, and it preserves the passivity of the subsystems and the synchronization of the network. Moreover, it allows for the a priori computation of a bound on the approximation error. Finally, the feasibility of the method is demonstrated by an example.
This paper considers the cooperative output regulation problem for linear multi-agent systems with a directed communication graph, heterogeneous linear subsystems, and an exosystem whose output is available to only a subset of subsystems. Both the cases with nominal and uncertain linear subsystems are studied. For the case with nominal linear subsystems, a distributed adaptive observer-based controller is designed, where the distributed adaptive observer is implemented for the subsystems to estimate the exogenous signal. For the case with uncertain linear subsystems, the proposed distributed observer and the internal model principle are combined to solve the robust cooperative output regulation problem. Compared with the existing works, one main contribution of this paper is that the proposed control schemes can be designed and implemented by each subsystem in a fully distributed fashion for general directed graphs. For the special case with undirected graphs, a distributed output feedback control law is further presented.
