We show that, in contrast to the integers setting, almost all even order abelian groups $G$ have exponentially fewer maximal sum-free sets than $2^{mu(G)/2}$, where $mu(G)$ denotes the size of a largest sum-free set in $G$. This confirms a conjecture of Balogh, Liu, Sharifzadeh and Treglown.
Let $(G, +)$ be an abelian group. In 2004, Eliahou and Kervaire found an explicit formula for the smallest possible cardinality of the sumset $A+A$, where $A subseteq G$ has fixed cardinality $r$. We consider instead the smallest possible cardinality of the difference set $A-A$, which is always greater than or equal to the smallest possible cardinality of $A+A$ and can be strictly greater. We conjecture a formula for this quantity and prove the conjecture in the case that $G$ is a cyclic group or a vector space over a finite field. This resolves a conjecture of Bajnok and Matzke on signed sumsets.
Nielsen proved that the maximum number of maximal independent sets (MISs) of size $k$ in an $n$-vertex graph is asymptotic to $(n/k)^k$, with the extremal construction a disjoint union of $k$ cliques with sizes as close to $n/k$ as possible. In this paper we study how many MISs of size $k$ an $n$-vertex graph $G$ can have if $G$ does not contain a clique $K_t$. We prove for all fixed $k$ and $t$ that there exist such graphs with $n^{lfloorfrac{(t-2)k}{t-1}rfloor-o(1)}$ MISs of size $k$ by utilizing recent work of Gowers and B. Janzer on a generalization of the Ruzsa-Szemeredi problem. We prove that this bound is essentially best possible for triangle-free graphs when $kle 4$.
The purpose of the article is to provide an unified way to formulate zero-sum invariants. Let $G$ be a finite additive abelian group. Let $B(G)$ denote the set consisting of all nonempty zero-sum sequences over G. For $Omega subset B(G$), let $d_{Omega}(G)$ be the smallest integer $t$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $|S|geq t$ has a subsequence in $Omega$.We provide some first results and open problems on $d_{Omega}(G)$.
We count the ordered sum-free triplets of subsets in the group $mathbb{Z}/pmathbb{Z}$, i.e., the triplets $(A,B,C)$ of sets $A,B,C subset mathbb{Z}/pmathbb{Z}$ for which the equation $a+b=c$ has no solution with $ain A$, $b in B$ and $c in C$. Our main theorem improves on a recent result by Semchankau, Shabanov, and Shkredov using a different and simpler method. Our proof relates previous results on the number of independent sets of regular graphs by Kahn, Perarnau and Perkins, and Csikvari to produce explicit estimates on smaller order terms. We also obtain estimates for the number of sum-free triplets of subsets in a general abelian group.
Let $mathcal{S}$ be a finite cyclic semigroup written additively. An element $e$ of $mathcal{S}$ is said to be idempotent if $e+e=e$. A sequence $T$ over $mathcal{S}$ is called {sl idempotent-sum free} provided that no idempotent of $mathcal{S}$ can be represented as a sum of one or more terms from $T$. We prove that an idempotent-sum free sequence over $mathcal{S}$ of length over approximately a half of the size of $mathcal{S}$ is well-structured. This result generalizes the Savchev-Chen Structure Theorem for zero-sum free sequences over finite cyclic groups.
