Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to investigate in detail collective modes spectra of two-dimensional Coulomb fluids in a wide range of coupling. The obtained dispersion relations are compared with theoretical approaches based on quasi-crystalline approximation (QCA), also known as the quasi-localized charge approximation (QLCA) in the plasma-related context. An overall satisfactory agreement between theory and simulations is documented for the longitudinal mode at moderate coupling and in the long-wavelength domain at strong coupling. For the transverse mode, satisfactory agreement in the long-wavelength domain is only reached at very strong coupling, when the cutoff wave-number below which shear waves cannot propagate becomes small. The dependence of the cutoff wave-number for shear waves on the coupling parameter is obtained.
The most energetically favourable arrangement of low-density electrons in an infinite two-dimensional plane is the ordered triangular Wigner lattice. However, in most instances of contemporary interest one deals instead with finite clusters of strongly interacting particles localized in potential traps, for example, in complex plasmas. In the current contribution we study distribution of topological defects in two-dimensional Coulomb clusters with parabolic lateral confinement. The minima hopping algorithm based on molecular dynamics is used to efficiently locate the ground- and low-energy metastable states, and their structure is analyzed by means of the Delaunay triangulation. The size, structure and distribution of geometry-induced lattice imperfections strongly depends on the system size and the energetic state. Besides isolated disclinations and dislocations, classification of defect motifs includes defect compounds --- grain boundaries, rosette defects, vacancies and interstitial particles. Proliferation of defects in metastable configurations destroys the orientational order of the Wigner lattice.
A simple vibrational model of heat transfer in two-dimensional (2D) fluids relates the heat conductivity coefficient to the longitudinal and transverse sound velocities, specific heat, and the mean interatomic separation. This model is demonstrated not to contradict the available experimental and numerical data on heat transfer in 2D complex plasma layers. Additionally, the heat conductivity coefficient of a 2D one-component plasma with a logarithmic interaction is evaluated.
Collective modes in two dimensional topological superconductors are studied by an extended random phase approximation theory while considering the influence of vector field of light. In two situations, the s-wave superconductors without spin-orbit-coupling (SOC), and the hybrid semiconductor and s-wave superconductor layers with strong SOC, we get the analytical results for longitudinal modes which are found to be indeed gapless. Further more, the effective modes volumes can be calculated, the electric and magnetic fields can be expressed as the creation and annihilation operators of such modes. So, one can study the interaction of them with other quasi-particles through fields.
We provide a theoretical explanation for the optical modes observed in inelastic neutron scattering (INS) on the bcc solid phase of helium 4 [T. Markovich, E. Polturak, J. Bossy, and E. Farhi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 195301 (2002)]. We argue that these excitations are amplitude (Higgs) modes associated with fluctuations of the crystal order parameter within the unit cell. We present an analysis of the modes based on an effective Ginzburg-Landau model, classify them according to their symmetry properties, and compute their signature in INS experiments. In addition, we calculate the dynamical structure factor by means of an ab intio quantum Monte Carlo simulation and find a finite frequency excitation at zero relative momentum.
Strong correlation effects in classical and quantum plasmas are discussed. In particular, Coulomb (Wigner) crystallization phenomena are reviewed focusing on one-component non-neutral plasmas in traps and on macroscopic two-component neutral plasmas. The conditions for crystal formation in terms of critical values of the coupling parameters and the distance fluctuations and the phase diagram of Coulomb crystals are discussed.
