We study the classical dynamics of an axion field (the signal) that is coupling into a Josephson junction (the detector) by means of a capacitive coupling of arbitrary size. Depending on the size of the coupling constant and the initial conditions, we find a rich phase space structure of this nonlinear problem. We present general analytic solutions of the equations of motion in the limit of small amplitudes of the angle variables, and discuss both the case of no dissipation and the case of dissipation in the system. The effect of a magnetic field is investigated as well, leading to topological phase transitions in the phase space structure.

We study the superconducting current of a Josephson junction (JJ) coupled to an external nanomagnet driven by a time dependent magnetic field both without and in the presence of an external AC drive. We provide an analytic, albeit perturbative, solution for the Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equations governing the coupled JJ-nanomagnet system in the presence of a magnetic field with arbitrary time-dependence oriented along the easy axis of the nanomagnets magnetization and in the limit of weak dimensionless coupling $epsilon_0$ between the JJ and the nanomagnet. We show the existence of Shapiro-like steps in the I-V characteristics of the JJ subjected to a voltage bias for a constant or periodically varying magnetic field and explore the effect of rotation of the magnetic field and the presence of an external AC drive on these steps. We support our analytic results with exact numerical solution of the LL equations. We also extend our results to dissipative nanomagnets by providing a perturbative solution to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equations for weak dissipation. We study the fate of magnetization-induced Shapiro steps in the presence of dissipation both from our analytical results and via numerical solution of the coupled LLG equations. We discuss experiments which can test our theory.
We investigate the influence of a weakly nonlinear Josephson bath consisting of a chain of Josephson junctions on the dynamics of a small quantum system (LC oscillator). Focusing on the regime where the charging energy is the largest energy scale, we perturbatively calculate the correlation function of the Josephson bath to the leading order in the Josephson energy divided by the charging energy while keeping the cosine potential exactly. When the variation of the charging energy along the chain ensures fast decay of the bath correlation function, the dynamics of the LC oscillator that is weakly and capacitively coupled to the Josephson bath can be solved through the Markovian master equation. We establish a duality relation for the Josephson bath between the regimes of large charging and Josephson energies respectively. The results can be applied to cases where the charging energy either is nonuniformly engineered or disordered in the chain. Furthermore, we find that the Josephson bath may become non-Markovian when the temperature is increased beyond the zero-temperature limit in that the bath correlation function gets shifted by a constant and does not decay with time.

We experimentally demonstrate the occurrence of negative absolute resistance (NAR) up to about $-1Omega$ in response to an externally applied dc current for a shunted Nb-Al/AlO$_x$-Nb Josephson junction, exposed to a microwave current at frequencies in the GHz range. The realization (or not) of NAR depends crucially on the amplitude of the applied microwave current. Theoretically, the system is described by means of the resistively and capacitively shunted junction model in terms of a moderately damped, classical Brownian particle dynamics in a one-dimensional potential. We find excellent agreement of the experimental results with numerical simulations of the model.

We study the chaotic behavior of multidimensional Hamiltonian systems in the presence of nonlinearity and disorder. It is known that any localized initial excitation in a large enough linear disordered system spreads for a finite amount of time and then halts forever. This phenomenon is called Anderson localization (AL). What happens to AL when nonlinearity is introduced is an interesting question which has been considered in several studies over the past decades. However, the characteristics and the asymptotic fate of such evolutions still remain an issue of intense debate due to their computational difficulty, especially in systems of more than one spatial dimension. As the spreading of initially localized wave packets is a non-equilibrium thermalization process related to the ergodic and chaotic properties of the system, in our work we investigate the properties of chaos studying the behavior of observables related to the systems tangent dynamics. In particular, we consider the disordered discrete nonlinear Schrodinger (DDNLS) equation of one (1D) and two (2D) spatial dimensions. We present detailed computations of the time evolution of the systems maximum Lyapunov exponent (MLE--$Lambda$), and the related deviation vector distribution (DVD). We find that although the systems MLE decreases in time following a power law $t^{alpha_Lambda}$ with $alpha_Lambda <0$ for both the weak and strong chaos regimes, no crossover to the behavior $Lambda propto t^{-1}$ (which is indicative of regular motion) is observed. In addition, the analysis of the DVDs reveals the existence of random fluctuations of chaotic hotspots with increasing amplitudes inside the excited part of the wave packet, which assist in homogenizing chaos and contribute to the thermalization of more lattice sites.
We revisit the stabilization of ionization of atoms subjected to a superintense laser pulse using nonlinear dynamics. We provide an explanation for the lack of complete ionization at high intensity and for the decrease of the ionization probability as intensity is increased. We investigate the role of each part of the laser pulse (ramp-up, plateau, ramp-down) in this process. We emphasize the role of the choice for the ionization criterion, energy versus distance criterion.
