We investigate the electronic structure of the epitaxial VO$_2$ films in the rutile phase using the density functional theory combined with the slave spin method (DFT+SS). In DFT-SS, the multiorbital Hubbard interactions are added to a DFT-fit tight-binding model, and we employ the slave-spin method to treat the electron correlation. We find that while stretching the system along the rutile $c$-axis results in a band structure favoring an anisotropic orbital fillings, the electron correlation favors an equal electron filling among $t_{2g}$ orbitals. These two distinct effects cooperatively induce interesting orbital-dependent redistributions of the electron occupations and the spectral weights, which pushes the strained VO$_2$ toward an orbital selective Mott transition (OSMT). The simulated single-particle spectral functions are directly compared to V L-edge resonant X-ray photoemission spectroscopy of epitaxial 10 nm VO$_2$/TiO$_2$ (001) and (100) strain orientations. Excellent agreement is observed between the simulations and experimental data regarding the strain-induced evolution of the lower Hubbard band. Simulations of rutile NbO$_2$ under similar strain conditions as VO$_2$ are performed, and we predict that OSMT will not occur in rutile NbO$_2$. Our results indicates that the electron correlation in VO$_2$ is important and can be modulated even in the rutile phase before the Peierls instability sets in.

Soft x-ray spectroscopy is used to investigate the strain dependence of the metal-insulator transition of VO2. Changes in the strength of the V 3d - O 2p hybridization are observed across the transition, and are linked to the structural distortion. Furthermore, although the V-V dimerization is well-described by dynamical mean-field theory, the V-O hybridization is found to have an unexpectedly strong dependence on strain that is not predicted by band theory, emphasizing the relevance of the O ion to the physics of VO2.
Using density-functional theory calculations, we investigate the magnetic as well as the dynamical properties of tetragonal SrRuO3 (SRO) under the influence of epitaxial strain. It is found that both the tensile and compressive strain in the xy-plane could induce the abrupt change in the magnetic moment of Ru atom. In particular, under the in-plane ~4% compressive strain, a ferromagnetic to nonmagnetic transition is induced. Whereas for the tensile strain larger than 3%, the Ru magnetic moment drops gradually with the increase of the strain, exhibiting a weak ferromagnetic state. We find that such magnetic transitions could be qualitatively explained by the Stoner model. In addition, frozen phonon calculations at {Gamma} point reveal structural instabilities could occur under both compressive and tensile strains. Such instabilities are very similar to those of the ferroelectric perovskite oxides, even though SRO remains to be metallic in the range we studied. These might have influence on the physical properties of oxide supercells taking SRO as constituent.

The structure, morphology, and electrical properties of epitaxial a-axis oriented thin films of Nd(0.2)Sr(0.8)MnO(3) are reported for thicknesses 10 nm <= t <= 150 nm. Films were grown with both tensile and compressive strain on various substrates. It is found that the elongated crystallographic c-axes of the films remain fully strained to the substrates for all thicknesses in both strain states. Relaxation of the a and b axes is observed for t>= 65 nm with films grown under tensile strain developing uniaxial crack arrays (running along the c axis) due to a highly anisotropic thermal expansion. For the latter films, the room-temperature in-plane electrical resistivity anisotropy, rho_b/rho_c, increases approximately exponentially with increasing film thickness to values of ~1000 in the thickest films studied. Films under tension have their Neel temperatures enhanced by ~25 K independent of thickness, consistent with an enhancement of ferromagnetic exchange along their expanded c axes.

We have synthesized epitaxial NdNiO$_{3}$ ultra-thin films in a layer-by-layer growth mode under tensile and compressive strain on SrTiO$_{3}$ (001) and LaAlO$_3$ (001), respectively. A combination of X-ray diffraction, temperature dependent resistivity, and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been applied to elucidate electronic and structural properties of the samples. In contrast to the bulk NdNiO$_{3}$, the metal-insulator transition under compressive strain is found to be completely quenched, while the transition remains under the tensile strain albeit modified from the bulk behavior.

We present an accurate implementation of total energy calculations into the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT) method. The electronic structure problem is solved through the full potential linear Muffin-Tin Orbital (FP-LMTO) and Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (FP-KKR) methods with a perturbative solver for the effective impurity suitable for moderately correlated systems. We have tested the method in detail for the case of Ni and investigated the sensitivity of the results to the computational scheme and to the complete self-consistency. It is demonstrated that the LDA+DMFT method can resolve a long-standing controversy between the LDA/GGA density functional approach and experiment for equilibrium lattice constant and bulk modulus of Mn.
