We demonstrate that in the frame of the random phase approximation with the exchange, which preserves the validity of the precise well known dipole sum rule, the partial contributions for given subshells strongly deviates from the number of electrons in these subshells. This demonstrates strong effects of intershell interaction in atoms.

We have calculated partial contributions of different endohedral and atomic subshells to the total dipole sum rule in the frame of the random phase approximation with exchange (RPAE) and found that they are essentially different from the numbers of electrons in respective subshells. This difference manifests the strength of the intershell interaction. We present concrete results of calculations for endohedrals, composed of fullerene C60 and all noble gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe thus forming respectively He@C60, Ne@C60, Ar@C60, Kr@C60, and Xe@C60. For comparison we obtained similar results for isolated noble gas atoms. The deviation from number of electrons in outer subshells proved to be much bigger in endohedrals than in isolated atoms thus demonstrating considerably stronger intershell correlations there.
We report on our calculations of differential hyperfine anomalies in the nuclear single-particle model for a number of atoms and ions of interest for studies of fundamental symmetries violations. Comparison with available experimental data allows one to discriminate between different nuclear magnetization models, and this data supports the use of the nuclear single-particle model over the commonly-used uniform ball model. Accurate modelling of the nuclear magnetization distribution is important for testing atomic theory through hyperfine comparisons. The magnetization distribution must be adequately understood and modelled, with uncertainties well under the atomic theory uncertainty, for hyperfine comparisons to be meaningful. This has not been the case for a number of atoms of particular interest for precision studies, including Cs. Our work demonstrates the validity of the nuclear single-particle model for Cs, and this has implications for the theory analysis of atomic parity violation in this atom.
Precision calculations of the fine and hyperfine structure of muonic atoms are performed in a relativistic approach and results for muonic 205 Bi, 147 Sm, and 89 Zr are presented. The hyperfine structure due to magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole splitting is calculated in first order perturbation theory, using extended nuclear charge and current distributions. The leading correction from quantum electrodynamics, namely vacuum polarization in Uehling approximation, is included as a potential directly in the Dirac equation. Also, an effective screening potential due to the surrounding electrons is calculated, and the leading relativistic recoil correction is estimated.
We use R-Matrix with Time-dependence (RMT) theory, with spin-orbit effects included, to study krypton irradiated by two time-delayed XUV ultrashort pulses. The first pulse excites the atom to 4s$^{2}$4p$^{5}$5s. The second pulse then excites 4s4p$^{6}$5s autoionising levels, whose population can be observed through their subsequent decay. By varying the time delay between the two pulses, we are able to control the excitation pathway to the autoionising states. The use of cross-polarised light pulses allows us to isolate the two-photon pathway, with one photon taken from each pulse.

We have used the convergent close-coupling method and a unitarized first-order many-body theory to calculate integral cross sections for elastic scattering and momentum transfer, for excitation of the 5d^2 ^1S, 6s6p^1P_1, 6s7p^1P_1, 6s8p^1P_1, 6s5d^1D_2, 5d^2^1D_2, 6s6d^1D_2, 6p5d^1F_3, 6s4f^1F_3, 6p5d^1D_2, 6s6p^3P_{0,1,2}, 6s5d^3D_{1,2,3}, and 6p5d^3D_2 states, for ionization and for total scattering by electron impact on the ground state of barium at incident electron energies from 1 to 1000 eV. These results and all available experimental data have been combined to produce a recommended set of integral cross sections.
