Direct manipulation of the atomic lattice using intense long-wavelength laser pulses has become a viable approach to create new states of matter in complex materials. Conventionally, a high frequency vibrational mode is driven resonantly by a mid-infrared laser pulse and the lattice structure is modified through indirect coupling of this infrared-active phonon to other, lower frequency lattice modulations. Here, we drive the lowest frequency optical phonon in the prototypical transition metal oxide SrTiO3 well into the anharmonic regime with an intense terahertz field. We show that it is possible to transfer energy to higher frequency phonon modes through nonlinear coupling. Our observations are carried out by directly mapping the lattice response to the coherent drive field with femtosecond x-ray pulses, enabling direct visualization of the atomic displacements.

We demonstrate a current tunable Rashba spin orbit interaction in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) quasi two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) system. Anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) measurements are employed to detect and understand the current-induced Rashba field. The effective Rashba field scales with the current and a value of 2.35 T is observed for a dc-current of 200 uA. The results suggest that LAO/STO heterostructures can be considered for spin orbit torque based magnetization switching.
We have studied the O 2p valence-band structure of Nb-doped SrTiO3, in which a dilute concentration of electrons are doped into the d0 band insulator, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. We found that ARPES spectra at the valence band maxima at the M [k = (pi/a, pi/a, 0)]and R [k = (pi/a, pi/a, pi/a)] points start from ~ 3.3 eV below the Fermi level (EF), consistent with the indirect band gap of 3.3 eV and the EF position at the bottom of the conduction band. The peak position of the ARPES spectra were, however, shifted toward higher binding energies by ~ 500 meV from the 3.3 eV threshold. Because the bands at M and R have pure O 2p character, we attribute this ~ 500 meV shift to strong coupling of the oxygen p hole with optical phonons in analogy with the peak shifts observed for d-electron photoemission spectra in various transition-metal oxides.

The zone-center $E_{2g}$ modes play a crucial role in MgB$_2$, controlling the scattering mechanisms in the normal state as well the superconducting pairing. Here, we demonstrate via first-principles quantum-field theory calculations that, due to the anisotropic electron-phonon interaction, a $hot$-$phonon$ regime where the $E_{2g}$ phonons can achieve significantly larger effective populations than other modes, is triggered in MgB$_2$ by the interaction with an ultra-short laser pulse. Spectral signatures of this scenario in ultrafast pump-probe Raman spectroscopy are discussed in detail, revealing also a fundamental role of nonadiabatic processes in the optical features of the $E_{2g}$ mode.

The dynamical processes associated with electric field manipulation of the polarization in a ferroelectric remain largely unknown but fundamentally determine the speed and functionality of ferroelectric materials and devices. Here we apply sub-picosecond duration, single-cycle terahertz pulses as an ultrafast electric field bias to prototypical BaTiO$_3$ ferroelectric thin films with the atomic-scale response probed by femtosecond x-ray scattering techniques. We show that electric fields applied perpendicular to the ferroelectric polarization drive large amplitude displacements of the titanium atoms along the ferroelectric polarization axis, comparable to that of the built-in displacements associated with the intrinsic polarization and incoherent across unit cells. This effect is associated with a dynamic rotation of the ferroelectric polarization switching on and then off on picosecond timescales. These transient polarization modulations are followed by long-lived vibrational heating effects driven by resonant excitation of the ferroelectric soft mode, as reflected in changes in the c-axis tetragonality. The ultrafast structural characterization described here enables direct comparison with first-principles-based molecular dynamics simulations, with good agreement obtained.
We report on the generation of bulk photocurrents in materials driven by non-resonant bi-chromatic fields that are circularly polarized and co-rotating. The nonlinear photocurrents have a fully controllable directionality and amplitude without requiring carrier-envelope-phase stabilization or few-cycle pulses, and are generated with photon energies much smaller than the band gap (reducing heating in the photo-conversion process). We demonstrate with ab-initio calculations that the photocurrent generation mechanism is universal and arises in gaped materials (Si, diamond, MgO, hBN), in semi-metals (graphene), and in two- and three-dimensional systems. Photocurrents are shown to rely on sub-laser-cycle asymmetries in the nonlinear response that build-up coherently from cycle-to-cycle as the conduction band is populated. Importantly, the photocurrents are always transverse to the major axis of the co-circular lasers regardless of the materials structure and orientation (analogously to a Hall current), which we find originates from a generalized time-reversal symmetry in the driven system. At high laser powers (~10^13 W/cm^2) this symmetry can be spontaneously broken by vast electronic excitations, which is accompanied by an onset of carrier-envelope-phase sensitivity and ultrafast many-body effects. Our results are directly applicable for efficient light-driven control of electronics, and for enhancing sub-band-gap bulk photovoltaic effects.
