We performed susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, and single crystal neutron diffraction measurements on single crystalline BaMn$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$. Based on the results, we revisited its spin structure with a more accurate solution and constructed a magnetic phase diagram with applied field along the $b$-axis, which contains a spin flop transition around 6 T. We also used susceptibility, magnetization, and specific heat results confirmed the ferrimagnetic-like magnetism in polycrystalline BaCo$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$. Furthermore, we performed LSDA + U calculations for the BaM$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$ (M = Cu, Co, and Mn) system. Our discussions based on the comparison among the obtained magnetic exchange interactions suggest the different structures and electronic configurations are the reasons for the different magnetic properties among the system members.

A detailed study of the electronic structure and magnetic configurations of the 50 % hole-doped double layered manganite LaSr$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$ is presented. We demonstrate that the on-site Coulomb correlation (U) of Mn d electrons {it (i)} significantly modifies the electronic structure, magnetic ordering (from FM to AFM), and interlayer exchange interactions, and {it (ii)} promotes strong anisotropy in electrical transport, reducing the effective hopping parameter along the {it c} axis for electrically active $e_g$ electrons. This findng is consistent with observations of anisotropic transport -- a property which sets this manganite apart from conventional 3D systems. A half-metallic band structure is predicted with both the LSDA and LSDA+U methods. The experimentally observed A-type AFM ordering in LaSr$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$ is found to be energetically more favorable with U $geq$ 7 eV. A simple interpretation of interlayer exchange coupling is given within double and super-exchange mechanisms based on the dependencies on U of the effective exchange parameters and $e_g$ state sub-band widths.
We report the magnetization ($chi$, $M$), specific heat ($C_{text{P}}$), and neutron powder diffraction results on a quasi-two-dimensional $S$ = 2 square lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_2$FeSi$_2$O$_7$ consisting of FeO$_4$ tetragons with a large compressive distortion (27%). Despite of the quasi-two-dimensional lattice structure, both $chi$ and $C_{text{P}}$ present three dimensional magnetic long-range order below the Neel temperature $T_{text{N}}$ = 5.2 K. Neutron diffraction data shows a collinear $Q_{m}$ = (1,0,0.5) antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with the in-plane ordered magnetic moment suppressed by 26% below $T_{text{N}}$. Both the AFM structure and the suppressed moments are well explained by the Monte Carlo simulation with a large single-ion ab-plane anisotropy $D$ = 1.4 meV and a rather small in-plane Heisenberg exchange $J_{text{intra}}$ = 0.15 meV. The characteristic two dimensional spin fluctuations can be recognized in the magnetic entropy release and diffuse scattering above $T_{text{N}}$. This new quasi-2D magnetic system also displays unusual non-monotonic dependence of the $T_{text{N}}$ as a function of magnetic field $H$.
The elementary excitations of the spin-ice materials Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ in zero field can be described as independent magnetic monopoles. We investigate the influence of these exotic excitations on the heat transport by measuring the magnetic-field dependent thermal conductivity $kappa $. Additional measurements on the highly dilute reference compounds HoYTi$_2$O$_7$ and DyYTi$_2$O$_7$ enable us to separate $kappa $ into a sum of phononic ($kappa_{ph}$) and magnetic ($kappa_{mag}$) contributions. For both spin-ice materials, we derive significant zero-field contributions $kappa_{mag}$, which are rapidly suppressed in finite magnetic fields. Moreover, $kappa_{mag}$ sensitively depends on the scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations, which is rather different for the Ho- and the Dy-based materials and, as a further consequence, the respective magnetic-field dependent changes $kappa_{ph}(B)$ are even of opposite signs.
We report detailed neutron scattering studies on Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$. The compound consists of two interpenetrating sublattices of Cu, labeled as Cu$_{rm A}$ and Cu$_{rm B}$, each of which forms a square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The two sublattices order at different temperatures and effective exchange couplings within the sublattices differ by an order of magnitude. This yields an inelastic neutron spectrum of the Cu$_{rm A}$ sublattice extending up to 300 meV and a much weaker dispersion of Cu$_{rm B}$ going up to around 20 meV. Using a single-band Hubbard model we derive an effective spin Hamiltonian. From this, we find that linear spin-wave theory gives a good description to the magnetic spectrum. In addition, a magnetic field of 10 T is found to produce effects on the Cu$_{rm B}$ dispersion that cannot be explained by conventional spin-wave theory.
We report low temperature specific heat and muon spin relaxation/rotation ($mu$SR) measurements on both polycrystalline and single crystal samples of the pyrochlore magnet Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. This system is believed to possess a spin Hamiltonian supporting a Quantum Spin Ice (QSI) ground state and to display sample variation in its low temperature heat capacity. Our two samples exhibit extremes of this sample variation, yet our $mu$SR measurements indicate a similar disordered low temperature state down to 16 mK in both. We report little temperature dependence to the spin relaxation and no evidence for ferromagnetic order, in contrast to recent reports by Chang emph{et al.} (Nat. Comm. {bf 3}, 992 (2012)). Transverse field (TF) $mu$SR measurements show changes in the temperature dependence of the muon Knight shift which coincide with heat capacity anomalies. We are therefore led to propose that Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ enters a hidden order ground state below $T_csim265$ mK where the nature of the ordered state is unknown but distinct from simple long range order.
