We provide ${cal N}=1$ superfield description of BPS backgrounds in six-dimensional supergravity (6D SUGRA) with 3-branes, which is compactified on a two-dimensional space. The brane terms induce the localized fluxes. We find a useful gauge in which the background equations become significantly simple. This is not the Wess-Zumino gauge, and the relation to the usual component-field expression of 6D SUGRA is not straightforward. One of the equations reduces to the Liouville equation. By moving to the Wess-Zumino gauge, we check that our expressions reproduce the known results of the previous works, which are expressed in the component fields. Our results help us develop the systematic derivation of four-dimensional effective theories that keeps the ${cal N}=1$ SUSY structure.
We suggest three new ${cal N}=1$ conformal dual pairs. First, we argue that the ${cal N}=2$ $E_6$ Minahan-Nemeschansky (MN) theory with a $USp(4)$ subgroup of the $E_6$ global symmetry conformally gauged with an ${cal N}=1$ vector multiplet and certain additional chiral multiplet matter resides at some cusp of the conformal manifold of an $SU(2)^5$ quiver gauge theory. Second, we argue that the ${cal N}=2$ $E_7$ MN theory with an $SU(2)$ subgroup of the $E_7$ global symmetry conformally gauged with an ${cal N}=1$ vector multiplet and certain additional chiral multiplet matter resides at some cusp of the conformal manifold of a conformal ${cal N}=1$ $USp(4)$ gauge theory. Finally, we claim that the ${cal N}=2$ $E_8$ MN theory with a $USp(4)$ subgroup of the $E_8$ global symmetry conformally gauged with an ${cal N}=1$ vector multiplet and certain additional chiral multiplet matter resides at some cusp of the conformal manifold of an ${cal N}=1$ $Spin(7)$ conformal gauge theory. We argue for the dualities using a variety of non-perturbative techniques including anomaly and index computations. The dualities can be viewed as ${cal N}=1$ analogues of ${cal N}=2$ Argyres-Seiberg/Argyres-Wittig duals of the $E_n$ MN models. We also briefly comment on an ${cal N}=1$ version of the Schur limit of the superconformal index.
We assume that the early universe is homogeneous, anisotropic, and is dominated by the mutually BPS 2255 intersecting branes of M theory. The spatial directions are all taken to be toroidal. Using analytical and numerical methods, we study the evolution of such an universe. We find that, asymptotically, three spatial directions expand to infinity and the remaining spatial directions reach stabilised values. Any stabilised values can be obtained by a fine tuning of initial brane densities. We give a physical description of the stabilisation mechanism. Also, from the perspective of four dimensional spacetime, the effective four dimensional Newtons constant G_4 is now time varying. Its time dependence will follow from explicit solutions. We find in the present case that, asymptotically, G_4 exhibits characteristic log periodic oscillations.
We obtain Yang-Mills $SU(2)times G$ gauged supergravity in three dimensions from $SU(2)$ group manifold reduction of (1,0) six dimensional supergravity coupled to an anti-symmetric tensor multiplet and gauge vector multiplets in the adjoint of $G$. The reduced theory is consistently truncated to $N=4$ 3D supergravity coupled to $4(1+textrm{dim}, G)$ bosonic and $4(1+textrm{dim}, G)$ fermionic propagating degrees of freedom. This is in contrast to the reduction in which there are also massive vector fields. The scalar manifold is $mathbf{R}times frac{SO(3,, textrm{dim}, G)}{SO(3)times SO(textrm{dim}, G)}$, and there is a $SU(2)times G$ gauge group. We then construct $N=4$ Chern-Simons $(SO(3)ltimes mathbf{R}^3)times (Gltimes mathbf{R}^{textrm{dim}G})$ three dimensional gauged supergravity with scalar manifold $frac{SO(4,,1+textrm{dim}G)}{SO(4)times SO(1+textrm{dim}G)}$ and explicitly show that this theory is on-shell equivalent to the Yang-Mills $SO(3)times G$ gauged supergravity theory obtained from the $SU(2)$ reduction, after integrating out the scalars and gauge fields corresponding to the translational symmetries $mathbf{R}^3times mathbf{R}^{textrm{dim}, G}$.
Compactifying type $A_{N-1}$ 6d ${cal N}{=}(2,0)$ supersymmetric CFT on a product manifold $M^4timesSigma^2=M^3timestilde{S}^1times S^1times{cal I}$ either over $S^1$ or over $tilde{S}^1$ leads to maximally supersymmetric 5d gauge theories on $M^4times{cal I}$ or on $M^3timesSigma^2$, respectively. Choosing the radii of $S^1$ and $tilde{S}^1$ inversely proportional to each other, these 5d gauge theories are dual to one another since their coupling constants $e^2$ and $tilde{e}^2$ are proportional to those radii respectively. We consider their non-Abelian but non-supersymmetric extensions, i.e. SU($N$) Yang-Mills theories on $M^4times{cal I}$ and on $M^3timesSigma^2$, where $M^4supset M^3=mathbb R_ttimes T_p^2$ with time $t$ and a punctured 2-torus, and ${cal I}subsetSigma^2$ is an interval. In the first case, shrinking ${cal I}$ to a point reduces to Yang-Mills theory or to the Skyrme model on $M^4$, depending on the method chosen for the low-energy reduction. In the second case, scaling down the metric on $M^3$ and employing the adiabatic method, we derive in the infrared limit a non-linear SU($N$) sigma model with a baby-Skyrme-type term on $Sigma^2$, which can be reduced further to $A_{N-1}$ Toda theory.
Type IIB string theory on a 5-sphere gives rise to ${cal N}=8, SO(6)$ gauged supergravity in five dimensions. Motivated by the fact that this is the context of the most widely studied example of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we undertake an investigation of its critical points. The scalar manifold is an $E_{6(6)}/USp(8)$ coset, and the challenge is that it is 42-dimensional. We take a Machine Learning approach to the problem using TensorFlow, and this results in a substantial increase in the number of known critical points. Our list of 32 critical points contains all five of the previously known ones, including an ${cal N}=2$ supersymmetric point identified by Khavaev, Pilch and Warner.
