Perturbative QCD corrections to hadronic $tau$ decays and $e^+e^-$ annihilation into hadrons below charm are obtained from the Adler function, which at present is known in the chiral limit to five-loop accuracy. Extractions of the strong coupling, $alpha_s$, from these processes suffer from an ambiguity related to the treatment of unknown higher orders in the perturbative series. In this work, we exploit the method of Pade approximants and its convergence theorems to extract information about higher-order corrections to the Adler function in a systematic way. First, the method is tested in the large-$beta_0$ limit of QCD, where the perturbative series is known to all orders. We devise strategies to accelerate the convergence of the method employing renormalization scheme variations and the so-called D-log Pade approximants. The success of these strategies can be understood in terms of the analytic structure of the series in the Borel plane. We then apply the method to full QCD and obtain reliable model-independent predictions for the higher-order coefficients of the Adler function. For the six-, seven-, and eight-loop coefficients we find $c_{5,1} = 277pm 51$, $c_{6,1}=3460pm 690$, and $c_{7,1}=(2.02pm0.72)times 10^4$, respectively, with errors to be understood as lower and upper bounds. Our model-independent reconstruction of the perturbative QCD corrections to the $tau$ hadronic width strongly favours the use of fixed-order perturbation theory (FOPT) for the renormalization-scale setting.

The Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) coupling, $alpha_s$, is not a physical observable of the theory since it depends on conventions related to the renormalization procedure. We introduce a definition of the QCD coupling, denoted by $hatalpha_s$, whose running is explicitly renormalization scheme invariant. The scheme dependence of the new coupling $hatalpha_s$ is parameterized by a single parameter $C$, related to transformations of the QCD scale $Lambda$. It is demonstrated that appropriate choices of $C$ can lead to substantial improvements in the perturbative prediction of physical observables. As phenomenological applications, we study $e^+e^-$ scattering and decays of the $tau$ lepton into hadrons, both being governed by the QCD Adler function.

In supersymmetric theories, the main decay modes of scalar quarks are decays into quarks plus charginos or neutralinos, if the gluinos are heavy enough. We calculate the O($alpha_s$) QCD corrections to these decay modes in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. In the case of scalar top and bottom quarks, where mixing effects can be important, these corrections can reach values of the order of a few ten percent. They can be either positive or negative and increase logarithmically with the gluino mass. For the scalar partners of light quarks, the corrections do not exceed in general the level of ten percent for gluino masses less than 1 TeV.
We present a simple formalism for the evolution of timelike jets in which tree-level matrix element corrections can be systematically incorporated, up to arbitrary parton multiplicities and over all of phase space, in a way that exponentiates the matching corrections. The scheme is cast as a shower Markov chain which generates one single unweighted event sample, that can be passed to standard hadronization models. Remaining perturbative uncertainties are estimated by providing several alternative weight sets for the same events, at a relatively modest additional overhead. As an explicit example, we consider Z -> q qbar evolution with unpolarized, massless quarks and include several formally subleading improvements as well as matching to tree-level matrix elements through alpha_s^4. The resulting algorithm is implemented in the publicly available VINCIA plugin to the PYTHIA 8 event generator.
We compute the inclusive jet spectrum in the presence of a dense QCD medium by going beyond the single parton energy loss approximation. We show that higher-order corrections are important yielding large logarithmic contributions that must be resummed to all orders. This reflects the fact that jet quenching is sensitive to fluctuations of the jet substructure.

Recent experimental data on tau decays are used to reconstruct the difference in hadronic spectral densities with vector and axial-vector quantum numbers. The saturation of Das-Mathur-Okubo and Weinberg sum rules is studied. Two methods of improving convergence and decreasing errors are applied, and good agreement with the predictions of current algebra and chiral perturbation theory is observed. The resulting value of the pion polarisability is (2.64 +/- 0.36) 10^-4 fm^3.
