Here we highlight recent progress in the field of computational chemistry of nanoporous materials, focusing on methods and studies that address the extraordinary dynamic nature of these systems: the high flexibility of their frameworks, the large-scale structural changes upon external physical or chemical stimulation, and the presence of defects and disorder. The wide variety of behavior demonstrated in soft porous crystals, including the topical class of metal-organic frameworks, opens new challenges for computational chemistry methods at all scales.

Pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) is one of the most promising techniques for the formation of complex-oxide heterostructures, superlattices, and well-controlled interfaces. The first part of this paper presents a review of several useful modifications of the process, including methods inspired by combinatorial approaches. We then discuss detailed growth kinetics results, which illustrate that true layer-by-layer (LBL) growth can only be approached, but not fully met, even though many characterization techniques reveal interfaces with unexpected sharpness. Time-resolved surface x-ray diffraction measurements show that crystallization and the majority of interlayer mass transport occur on time scales that are comparable to those of the plume/substrate interaction, providing direct experimental evidence that a growth regime exists in which non-thermal processes dominate PLD. This understanding shows how kinetic growth manipulation can bring PLD closer to ideal LBL than any other growth method available today.
Iron with a large magnetic moment was widely believed to be harmful to the emergence of superconductivity because of the competition between the static ordering of electron spins and the dynamic formation of electron pairs (Cooper pairs). Thus, the discovery of a high critical temperature (Tc) iron-based superconductor (IBSC) in 2008 was accepted with surprise in the condensed matter community and rekindled extensive study globally. IBSCs have since grown to become a new class of high-Tc superconductors next to the high-Tc cuprates discovered in 1986. The rapid research progress in the science and technology of IBSCs over the past decade has resulted in the accumulation of a vast amount of knowledge on IBSC materials, mechanisms, properties, and applications with the publication of more than several tens of thousands of papers. This article reviews recent progress in the technical applications (bulk magnets, thin films, and wires) of IBSCs in addition to their fundamental material characteristics. Highlights of their applications include high-field bulk magnets workable at 15-25 K, thin films with high critical current density (Jc) > 1 MA/cm2 at ~10 T and 4 K, and an average Jc of 1.3*104 A/cm2 at 10 T and 4 K achieved for a 100-m-class-length wire. These achievements are based on the intrinsically advantageous properties of IBSCs such as the higher crystallographic symmetry of the superconducting phase, higher critical magnetic field, and larger critical grain boundary angle to maintain high Jc. These properties also make IBSCs promising for applications using high magnetic fields.

Several chemical reactions catalyzed by plasmonic nanoparticles show enhanced rates under visible-light-excitation of the localized surface plasmon resonance of the nanoparticles. But it has been argued that there is an associated photothermal effect that can complicate the analysis and/or interpretation of the nature of the role played by plasmon excitation. This Viewpoint discusses this dilemma and provides some best practices for accounting for photothermal contributions in plasmon-excitation-driven chemistry. A classification of plasmonic chemistry into plasmonic photocatalysis and plasmonic photosynthesis is also proposed. It is argued that photosynthetic reactions, which require a Gibbs free energy input, constitute an ultimate test of the non-thermal, photochemical action of plasmon excitation.
Using infrared spectroscopy combined with ab initio methods we study reactions of H$_2$O and CO inside the confined spaces of Zn-MOF-74 channels. Our results show that, once the water dissociation reaction H$_2$O$;rightarrow;$OH+H takes place at the metal centers, the addition of 40 Torr of CO at 200 $^{circ}$C starts the production of formic acid via OH+H+CO$;rightarrow;$HCO$_2$H. Our detailed analysis shows that the overall reaction H$_2$O+CO$;rightarrow;$HCO$_2$H takes place in the confinement of MOF-74 without an external catalyst, unlike the same reaction on flat surfaces. This discovery has several important consequences: It opens the door to a new set of catalytic reactions inside the channels of the MOF-74 system, it suggests that a recovery of the MOFs adsorption capacity is possible after it has been exposed to water (which in turn stabilizes its crystal structure), and it produces the important industrial feedstock formic acid.

Highly flexible nanoporous materials, exhibiting for instance gate opening or breathing behavior, are often presented as candidates for separation processes due to their supposed high adsorption selectivity. But this view, based on classical considerations of rigid materials and the use of the Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST), does not necessarily hold in the presence of framework deformations. Here, we revisit some results from the published literature and show how proper inclusion of framework flexibility in the osmotic thermodynamic ensemble drastically changes the conclusions, in contrast to what intuition and standard IAST would yield. In all cases, the IAST method does not reproduce the gate-opening behavior in the adsorption of mixtures, and may overestimates the selectivity by up to two orders of magnitude.
