We study the coadjoint orbits of a Lie algebra in terms of Cartan class. In fact, the tangent space to a coadjoint orbit $mathcal{O}(alpha)$ at the point $alpha$ corresponds to the characteristic space associated to the left invariant form;$alpha$ and its dimension is the even part of the Cartan class of $alpha$. We apply this remark to determine Lie algebras such that all the nontrivial orbits (nonreduced to a point) have the same dimension, in particular when this dimension is 2 or 4. We determine also the Lie algebras of dimension $2n$ or $2n+1$ having an orbit of dimension $2n$.
A connected algebraic group Q defined over a field of characteristic zero is quasi-reductive if there is an element of its dual of reductive type, that is such that the quotient of its stabiliser by the centre of Q is a reductive subgroup of GL(q), where q=Lie(Q). Due to results of M. Duflo, coadjoint representation of a quasi-reductive Q possesses a so called maximal reductive stabiliser and knowing this subgroup, defined up to a conjugation in Q, one can describe all coadjoint orbits of reductive type. In this paper, we consider quasi-reductive parabolic subalgebras of simple complex Lie algebras as well as all seaweed subalgebras of gl(n) and describe the classes of their maximal reductive stabilisers.
For a given abelian group G, we classify the isomorphism classes of G-gradings on the simple restricted Lie algebras of types W(m;1) and S(m;1) (m>=2), in terms of numerical and group-theoretical invariants. Our main tool is automorphism group schemes, which we determine for the simple restricted Lie algebras of types S(m;1) and H(m;1). The ground field is assumed to be algebraically closed of characteristic p>3.
We investigate the graded Lie algebras of Cartan type $W$, $S$ and $H$ in characteristic 2 and determine their simple constituents and some exceptional isomorphisms between them. We also consider the graded Lie algebras of Cartan type $K$ in characteristic 2 and conjecture that their simple constituents are isomorphic to Lie algebras of type $H$.
In this paper we initiate the study of the maximal subalgebras of exceptional simple classical Lie algebras g over algebraically closed fields k of positive characteristic p, such that the prime characteristic is good for g. In this paper we deal with what is surely the most unnatural case; that is, where the maximal subalgebra in question is a simple subalgebra of non-classical type. We show that only the first Witt algebra can occur as a subalgebra of g and give explicit details on when it may be maximal in g.
The inverses of indecomposable Cartan matrices are computed for finite-dimensional Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras over fields of any characteristic, and for hyperbolic (almost affine) complex Lie (super)algebras. We discovered three yet inexplicable new phenomena, of which (a) and (b) concern hyperbolic (almost affine) complex Lie (super)algebras, except for the 5 Lie superalgebras whose Cartan matrices have 0 on the main diagonal: (a) several of the inverses of Cartan matrices have all their elements negative (not just non-positive, as they should be according to an a priori characterization due to Zhang Hechun); (b) the 0s only occur on the main diagonals of the inverses; (c) the determinants of inequivalent Cartan matrices of the simple Lie (super)algebra may differ (in any characteristic). We interpret most of the results of Wei Yangjiang and Zou Yi Ming, Inverses of Cartan matrices of Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras, Linear Alg. Appl., 521 (2017) 283--298 as inverses of the Gram matrices of non-degenerate invariant symmetric bilinear forms on the (super)algebras considered, not of Cartan matrices, and give more adequate references. In particular, the inverses of Cartan matrices of simple Lie algebras were already published, starting with Dynkins paper in 1952, see also Table 2 in Springers book by Onishchik and Vinberg (1990).
