We introduce ReConvNet, a recurrent convolutional architecture for semi-supervised video object segmentation that is able to fast adapt its features to focus on any specific object of interest at inference time. Generalization to new objects never observed during training is known to be a hard task for supervised approaches that would need to be retrained. To tackle this problem, we propose a more efficient solution that learns spatio-temporal features self-adapting to the object of interest via conditional affine transformations. This approach is simple, can be trained end-to-end and does not necessarily require extra training steps at inference time. Our method shows competitive results on DAVIS2016 with respect to state-of-the art approaches that use online fine-tuning, and outperforms them on DAVIS2017. ReConvNet shows also promising results on the DAVIS-Challenge 2018 winning the $10$-th position.
In this work we introduce a time- and memory-efficient method for structured prediction that couples neuron decisions across both space at time. We show that we are able to perform exact and efficient inference on a densely connected spatio-temporal graph by capitalizing on recent advances on deep Gaussian Conditional Random Fields (GCRFs). Our method, called VideoGCRF is (a) efficient, (b) has a unique global minimum, and (c) can be trained end-to-end alongside contemporary deep networks for video understanding. We experiment with multiple connectivity patterns in the temporal domain, and present empirical improvements over strong baselines on the tasks of both semantic and instance segmentation of videos.
We propose an efficient inference framework for semi-supervised video object segmentation by exploiting the temporal redundancy of the video. Our method performs inference on selected keyframes and makes predictions for other frames via propagation based on motion vectors and residuals from the compressed video bitstream. Specifically, we propose a new motion vector-based warping method for propagating segmentation masks from keyframes to other frames in a multi-reference manner. Additionally, we propose a residual-based refinement module that can correct and add detail to the block-wise propagated segmentation masks. Our approach is flexible and can be added on top of existing video object segmentation algorithms. With STM with top-k filtering as our base model, we achieved highly competitive results on DAVIS16 and YouTube-VOS with substantial speedups of up to 4.9X with little loss in accuracy.
Significant progress has been made in Video Object Segmentation (VOS), the video object tracking task in its finest level. While the VOS task can be naturally decoupled into image semantic segmentation and video object tracking, significantly much more research effort has been made in segmentation than tracking. In this paper, we introduce tracking-by-detection into VOS which can coherently integrate segmentation into tracking, by proposing a new temporal aggregation network and a novel dynamic time-evolving template matching mechanism to achieve significantly improved performance. Notably, our method is entirely online and thus suitable for one-shot learning, and our end-to-end trainable model allows multiple object segmentation in one forward pass. We achieve new state-of-the-art performance on the DAVIS benchmark without complicated bells and whistles in both speed and accuracy, with a speed of 0.14 second per frame and J&F measure of 75.9% respectively.
The attribution method provides a direction for interpreting opaque neural networks in a visual way by identifying and visualizing the input regions/pixels that dominate the output of a network. Regarding the attribution method for visually explaining video understanding networks, it is challenging because of the unique spatiotemporal dependencies existing in video inputs and the special 3D convolutional or recurrent structures of video understanding networks. However, most existing attribution methods focus on explaining networks taking a single image as input and a few works specifically devised for video attribution come short of dealing with diversified structures of video understanding networks. In this paper, we investigate a generic perturbation-based attribution method that is compatible with diversified video understanding networks. Besides, we propose a novel regularization term to enhance the method by constraining the smoothness of its attribution results in both spatial and temporal dimensions. In order to assess the effectiveness of different video attribution methods without relying on manual judgement, we introduce reliable objective metrics which are checked by a newly proposed reliability measurement. We verified the effectiveness of our method by both subjective and objective evaluation and comparison with multiple significant attribution methods.
Spatio-temporal action detection in videos requires localizing the action both spatially and temporally in the form of an action tube. Nowadays, most spatio-temporal action detection datasets (e.g. UCF101-24, AVA, DALY) are annotated with action tubes that contain a single person performing the action, thus the predominant action detection models simply employ a person detection and tracking pipeline for localization. However, when the action is defined as an interaction between multiple objects, such methods may fail since each bounding box in the action tube contains multiple objects instead of one person. In this paper, we study the spatio-temporal action detection problem with multi-object interaction. We introduce a new dataset that is annotated with action tubes containing multi-object interactions. Moreover, we propose an end-to-end spatio-temporal action detection model that performs both spatial and temporal regression simultaneously. Our spatial regression may enclose multiple objects participating in the action. During test time, we simply connect the regressed bounding boxes within the predicted temporal duration using a simple heuristic. We report the baseline results of our proposed model on this new dataset, and also show competitive results on the standard benchmark UCF101-24 using only RGB input.
