By suppressing repeated content deliveries, wireless caching has the potential to substantially improve the energy efficiency (EE) of the fifth generation (5G) communication networks. In this paper, we propose two novel energy-efficient caching schemes in heterogeneous networks, namely, scalable video coding (SVC)-based fractional caching and SVC-based random caching, which can provide on-demand video services with different perceptual qualities. We derive the expressions for successful transmission probabilities and ergodic service rates. Based on the derivations and the established power consumption models, the EE maximization problems are formulated for the two proposed caching schemes. By taking logarithmic approximations of the l0-norm, the problems are efficiently solved by the standard gradient projection method. Numerical results validate the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the superiority of our proposed caching schemes, compared to three benchmark strategies.

We develop the optimal economical caching schemes in cache-enabled heterogeneous networks, while delivering multimedia video services with personalized viewing qualities to mobile users. By applying scalable video coding (SVC), each video file to be requested is divided into one base layer (BL) and several enhancement layers (ELs). In order to assign different transmission tasks, the serving small-cell base stations (SBSs) are grouped into K clusters. The SBSs are able to cache and cooperatively transmit BL and EL contents to the user. We analytically derive the expressions for successful transmission probability and ergodic service rate, and then the closed form of EConomical Efficiency (ECE) is obtained. In order to enhance the ECE performance, we formulate the ECE optimization problems for two cases. In the first case, with equal cache size equipped at each SBS, the layer caching indicator is determined. Since this problem is NP-hard, after the l0-norm approximation, the discrete optimization variables are relaxed to be continuous, and this relaxed problem is convex. Next, based on the optimal solution derived from the relaxed problem, we devise a greedystrategy based heuristic algorithm to achieve the near-optimal layer caching indicators. In the second case, the cache size for each SBS, the layer size and the layer caching indicator are jointly optimized. This problem is a mixed integer programming problem, which is more challenging. To effectively solve this problem, the original ECE maximization problem is divided into two subproblems. These two subproblems are iteratively solved until the original optimization problem is convergent. Numerical results verify the correctness of theoretical derivations. Additionally, compared to the most popular layer placement strategy, the performance superiority of the proposed SVC-based caching schemes is testified.
Combining intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is an effective solution to enhance communication coverage and energy efficiency. In this paper, we focus on an IRS-assisted NOMA network and propose an energy-efficient algorithm to yield a good tradeoff between the sum-rate maximization and total power consumption minimization. We aim to maximize the system energy efficiency by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming at the BS and the reflecting beamforming at the IRS. Specifically, the transmit beamforming and the phases of the low-cost passive elements on the IRS are alternatively optimized until the convergence. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm in IRS-NOMA can yield superior performance compared with the conventional OMA-IRS and NOMA with a random phase IRS.
The combination of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and mobile edge computing (MEC) can significantly improve the spectrum efficiency beyond the fifth-generation network. In this paper, we mainly focus on energy-efficient resource allocation for a multi-user, multi-BS NOMA assisted MEC network with imperfect channel state information (CSI), in which each user can upload its tasks to multiple base stations (BSs) for remote executions. To minimize the energy consumption, we consider jointly optimizing the task assignment, power allocation and user association. As the main contribution, with imperfect CSI, the optimal closed-form expressions of task assignment and power allocation are analytically derived for the two-BS case. Specifically, the original formulated problem is nonconvex. We first transform the probabilistic problem into a non-probabilistic one. Subsequently, a bilevel programming method is proposed to derive the optimal solution. In addition, by incorporating the matching algorithm with the optimal task and power allocation, we propose a low complexity algorithm to efficiently optimize user association for the multi-user and multi-BS case. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can yield much better performance than the conventional OMA scheme but also the identical results with lower complexity from the exhaustive search with the small number of BSs.
Synchronization and ranging in internet of things (IoT) networks are challenging due to the narrowband nature of signals used for communication between IoT nodes. Recently, several estimators for range estimation using phase difference of arrival (PDoA) measurements of narrowband signals have been proposed. However, these estimators are based on data models which do not consider the impact of clock-skew on the range estimation. In this paper, clock-skew and range estimation are studied under a unified framework. We derive a novel and precise data model for PDoA measurements which incorporates the unknown clock-skew effects. We then formulate joint estimation of the clock-skew and range as a two-dimensional (2-D) frequency estimation problem of a single complex sinusoid. Furthermore, we propose: (i) a two-way communication protocol for collecting PDoA measurements and (ii) a weighted least squares (WLS) algorithm for joint estimation of clock-skew and range leveraging the shift invariance property of the measurement data. Finally, through numerical experiments, the performance of the proposed protocol and estimator is compared against the Cramer Rao lower bound demonstrating that the proposed estimator is asymptotically efficient.
In this paper, an energy efficiency (EE) game in a MIMO multiple access channel (MAC) communication system is considered. The existence and the uniqueness of the Nash Equilibrium (NE) is affirmed. A bisection search algorithm is designed to find this unique NE. Despite being sub-optimal for deploying the $varepsilon$-approximate NE of the game when the number of antennas in transmitter is unequal to receivers, the policy found by the proposed algorithm is shown to be more efficient than the classical allocation techniques. Moreover, compared to the general algorithm based on fractional programming technique, our proposed algorithm is easier to implement. Simulation shows that even the policy found by proposed algorithm is not the NE of the game, the deviation w.r.t. to the exact NE is small and the resulted policy actually Pareto-dominates the unique NE of the game at least for 2-user situation.
