Impurity scattering is found to lead to quasi-one dimensional nanoscale modulation of the local density of states in the iron pnictides and chalcogenides. This `quasiparticle interference feature is remarkably similar across a wide variety of pnictide and chalcogenide phases, suggesting a common origin. We show that a unified understanding of the experiments can be obtained by simply invoking a four-fold symmetry breaking $d_{xz}-d_{yz}$ orbital splitting, of a magnitude already suggested by the experiments. This can explain the one-dimensional characteristics in the local density of states observed in the orthorhombic nematic, tetragonal paramagnetic, as well as the spin-density wave and superconducting states in these materials.

By replacing the alkali element in the newly discovered K2Mo3As3 superconductor, we successfully synthesized ternary molybdenum pnictides Rb2Mo3As3 and Cs2Mo3As3 through solid state reaction method. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis reveals the same quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) hexagonal crystal structure and space group of P-6m2 (No. 187) as K2Mo3As3. The refined lattice parameters are a = 10.432 (1) {AA}, c = 4.4615 (6) {AA} for Rb2Mo3As3 and a = 10.7405 (6) {AA}, c = 4.4654 (5) {AA} for Cs2Mo3As3. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility characterizations exhibit the occurrence of superconductivity in both compounds with the onset Tc at 10.6 K and 11.5 K for Rb2Mo3As3 and Cs2Mo3As3 respectively, which exhibit weak negative chemical pressure effect in these A2Mo3As3 (A = K, Rb, Cs) superconductors contrary to the isostructural A2Cr3As3 superconductors. More interestingly, the Cs2Mo3As3 superconductor exhibits much higher upper critical field around 60 T at zero temperature. The discovery of these MoAs/CrAs-based superconductors provide a unique platform for the study of exotic superconductivity correlated with both 3d and 4d electrons in these Q1D compounds.
We report Fe K beta x-ray emission spectroscopy study of local magnetic moments in various iron based superconductors in their paramagnetic phases. Local magnetic moments are found in all samples studied: PrFeAsO, Ba(Fe,Co)2As2, LiFeAs, Fe1+x(Te,Se), and A2Fe4Se5 (A=K, Rb, and Cs). The moment size varies significantly across different families. Specifically, all iron pnictides samples have local moments of about 1 $mu_B$/Fe, while FeTe and K2Fe4Se5 families have much larger local moments of ~2$mu_B$/Fe, ~3.3$mu_B$/Fe, respectively. In addition, we find that neither carrier doping nor temperature change affects the local moment size.
We use point contact spectroscopy to probe $rm{AEFe_2As_2}$ ($rm{AE=Ca, Sr, Ba}$) and $rm{Fe_{1+y}Te}$. For $rm{AE=Sr, Ba}$ we detect orbital fluctuations above $T_S$ while for AE=Ca these fluctuations start below $T_S$. Co doping preserves the orbital fluctuations while K doping suppresses it. The fluctuations are only seen at those dopings and temperatures where an in-plane resistive anisotropy is known to exist. We predict an in-plane resistive anisotropy of $rm{Fe_{1+y}Te}$ above $T_S$. Our data are examined in light of the recent work by W.-C. Lee and P. Phillips (arXiv:1110.5917v2). We also study how joule heating in the PCS junctions impacts the spectra. Spectroscopic information is only obtained from those PCS junctions that are free of heating effects while those PCS junctions that are in the thermal regime display bulk resistivity phenomenon.
Deviations of low-energy electronic structure of iron-based superconductors from density functional theory predictions have been parametrized in terms of band- and orbital-dependent mass renormalizations and energy shifts. The former have typically been described in terms of a local self-energy within the framework of dynamical mean field theory, while the latter appears to require non-local effects due to interband scattering. By calculating the renormalized bandstructure in both random phase approximation (RPA) and the two-particle self-consistent approximation (TPSC), we show that correlations in pnictide systems like LaFeAsO and LiFeAs can be described rather well by a non-local self-energy. In particular, Fermi pocket shrinkage as seen in experiment occurs due to repulsive interband finite-energy scattering. For the canonical iron chalcogenide system FeSe in its bulk tetragonal phase, the situation is however more complex since even including momentum-dependent band renormalizations cannot explain experimental findings. We propose that the long-range Coulomb interaction may play an important role in band-structure renormalization in FeSe. We further compare our evaluations of non-local quasiparticle scattering lifetime within RPA and TPSC with experimental data for LiFeAs.
Following the discovery of superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ containing [(Cr$_3$As$_3$)$^{2-}$]$_{infty}$ chains [J. K. Bao et al., arXiv: 1412.0067 (2014)], we succeeded in synthesizing an analogous compound, Rb$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$, which also crystallizes in a hexagonal lattice. The replacement of K by Rb results in an expansion of $a$ axis by 3%, indicating a weaker interchain coupling in Rb$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. Bulk superconductivity emerges at 4.8 K, above which the normal-state resistivity shows a linear temperature dependence up to 35 K. The estimated upper critical field at zero temperature exceeds the Pauli paramagnetic limit by a factor of two. Furthermore, the electronic specific-heat coefficient extrapolated to zero temperature in the mixed state increases with $sqrt{H}$, suggesting existence of nodes in the superconducting energy gap. Hence Rb$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ manifests itself as another example of unconventional superconductor in the Cr$_3$As$_3$-chain based system.
