We study strong compactly aligned product systems of $mathbb{Z}_+^N$ over a C*-algebra $A$. We provide a description of their Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra in terms of tractable relations coming from ideals of $A$. This approach encompasses product systems where the left action is given by compacts, as well as a wide class of higher rank graphs (beyond row-finite). Moreover we analyze higher rank factorial languages and their C*-algebras. Many of the rank one results in the literature find here their higher rank analogues. In particular, we show that the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra of a higher rank sofic language coincides with the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of its unlabeled follower set higher rank graph. However there are also differences. For example, the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner can lie in-between the first quantization and its quotient by the compactly supported operators.

A higher rank numerical semigroup is a positive cone whose seminormalization is isomorphic to the free abelian semigroup. The corresponding nonselfadjoint semigroup algebras are known to provide examples that answer Arvesons Dilation Problem to the negative. Here we show that these algebras share the polydisc as the character space in a canonical way. We subsequently use this feature in order to identify higher rank numerical semigroups from the corresponding nonselfadjoint algebras.
Let $A$ be a unital operator algebra and let $alpha$ be an automorphism of $A$ that extends to a *-automorphism of its $ca$-envelope $cenv (A)$. In this paper we introduce the isometric semicrossed product $A times_{alpha}^{is} bbZ^+ $ and we show that $cenv(A times_{alpha}^{is} bbZ^+) simeq cenv (A) times_{alpha} bbZ$. In contrast, the $ca$-envelope of the familiar contractive semicrossed product $A times_{alpha} bbZ^+ $ may not equal $cenv (A) times_{alpha} bbZ$. Our main tool for calculating $ca$-envelopes for semicrossed products is the concept of a relative semicrossed product of an operator algebra, which we explore in the more general context of injective endomorphisms. As an application, we extend a recent result of Davidson and Katsoulis to tensor algebras of $ca$-correspondences. We show that if $T_{X}^{+}$ is the tensor algebra of a $ca$-correspondence $(X, fA)$ and $alpha$ a completely isometric automorphism of $T_{X}^{+}$ that fixes the diagonal elementwise, then the contractive semicrossed product satisfies $ cenv(T_{X}^{+} times_{alpha} bbZ^+)simeq O_{X} times_{alpha} bbZ$, where $O_{X}$ denotes the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of $(X, fA)$.
We present some general theorems about operator algebras that are algebras of functions on sets, including theories of local algebras, residually finite dimensional operator algebras and algebras that can be represented as the scalar multipliers of a vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert space. We use these to further develop a quantized function theory for various domains that extends and unifies Aglers theory of commuting contractions and the Arveson-Drury-Popescu theory of commuting row contractions. We obtain analogous factorization theorems, prove that the algebras that we obtain are dual operator algebras and show that for many domains, supremums over all commuting tuples of operators satisfying certain inequalities are obtained over all commuting tuples of matrices.
The residual finite-dimensionality of a $mathrm{C}^*$-algebra is known to be encoded in a topological property of its space of representations, stating that finite-dimensional representations should be dense therein. We extend this paradigm to general (possibly non-self-adjoint) operator algebras. While numerous subtleties emerge in this greater generality, we exhibit novel tools for constructing finite-dimensional approximations. One such tool is a notion of a residually finite-dimensional coaction of a semigroup on an operator algebra, which allows us to construct finite-dimensional approximations for operator algebras of functions and operator algebras of semigroups. Our investigation is intimately related to the question of whether residual finite-dimensionality of an operator algebra is inherited by its maximal $mathrm{C}^*$-cover, which we resolve in many cases of interest.

Let $A$ be a unital separable simple ${cal Z}$-stable C*-algebra which has rational tracial rank at most one and let $uin U_0(A),$ the connected component of the unitary group of $A.$ We show that, for any $epsilon>0,$ there exists a self-adjoint element $hin A$ such that $$ |u-exp(ih)|<epsilon. $$ The lower bound of $|h|$ could be as large as one wants. If $uin CU(A),$ the closure of the commutator subgroup of the unitary group, we prove that there exists a self-adjoint element $hin A$ such that $$ |u-exp(ih)| <epsilon and |h|le 2pi. $$ Examples are given that the bound $2pi$ for $|h|$ is the optimal in general. For the Jiang-Su algebra ${cal Z},$ we show that, if $uin U_0({cal Z})$ and $epsilon>0,$ there exists a real number $-pi<tle pi$ and a self-adjoint element $hin {cal Z}$ with $|h|le 2pi$ such that $$ |e^{it}u-exp(ih)|<epsilon. $$
