The study of heavy-light meson masses should provide a way to determine renormalized quark masses and other properties of heavy-light mesons. In the context of lattice QCD, for example, it is possible to calculate hadronic quantities for arbitrary values of the quark masses. In this paper, we address two aspects relating heavy-light meson masses to the quark masses. First, we introduce a definition of the renormalized quark mass that is free of both scale dependence and renormalon ambiguities, and discuss its relation to more familiar definitions of the quark mass. We then show how this definition enters a merger of the descriptions of heavy-light masses in heavy-quark effective theory and in chiral perturbation theory ($chi$PT). For practical implementations of this merger, we extend the one-loop $chi$PT corrections to lattice gauge theory with heavy-light mesons composed of staggered fermions for both quarks. Putting everything together, we obtain a practical formula to describe all-staggered heavy-light meson masses in terms of quark masses as well as some lattice artifacts related to staggered fermions. In a companion paper, we use this function to analyze lattice-QCD data and extract quark masses and some matrix elements defined in heavy-quark effective theory.

Many hadronic states observed since 2003, especially for the positive-parity charm-strange states $D_{s0}^ast (2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$, do not conform with the conventional quark model expectations and raise various puzzles in charm meson spectroscopy. We demonstrate that those puzzles find a natural solution thanks to the recent development of chiral effective theory and Lattice simulations. The existence of the $D_{s0}^ast (2317)$ and $D_{s1}(2460)$ are attributed to the nonperturbative dynamics of Goldstone bosons scattering off $D$ and $D^ast$ mesons. It indicates that the lowest positive parity nonstrange scalar charm mesons, the $D_0^ast(2400)$ in the Review of Particel Physics, should be replaced by two states. The well constructed amplitudes are fully in line with the high quality data on the decays $B^-to D^+pi^-pi^-$ and $D_s^0to bar{D}^0K^-pi^+$. This implies that the lowest positve-parity states are dynamically generated rather than conventional quark-antiquark states. This pattern has also been established for the scalar and axial-vector mesons made from light quarks ($u$, $d$ and $s$ quarks).
A symmetry-preserving regularisation of a vector$times$vector contact interaction (SCI) is used to deliver a unified treatment of semileptonic transitions involving $pi$, $K$, $D_{(s)}$, $B_{(s,c)}$ initial states. The framework is characterised by algebraic simplicity, few parameters, and the ability to simultaneously treat systems from Nambu-Goldstone modes to heavy+heavy mesons. Although the SCI form factors are typically somewhat stiff, the results are comparable with experiment and rigorous theory results. Hence, predictions for the five unmeasured $B_{s,c}$ branching fractions should be a reasonable guide. The analysis provides insights into the effects of Higgs boson couplings via current-quark masses on the transition form factors; and results on $B_{(s)}to D_{(s)}$ transitions yield a prediction for the Isgur-Wise function in fair agreement with contemporary data.
We study the thermodynamic geometry of the Quark-Meson model, focusing on the curvature, $R$, around the chiral crossover at finite temperature and baryon chemical potential. We find a peculiar behavior of $R$ in the crossover region, in which the sign changes and a local maximum develops; in particular, the height of the peak of $R$ in the crossover region becomes large in proximity of the critical endpoint and diverges at the critical endpoint. The appearance of a pronounced peak of $R$ close to the critical endpoint supports the idea that $R$ grows with the correlation volume around the phase transition. We also analyze the mixed fluctuations of energy and baryon number, $langleDelta UDelta Nrangle$, which grow up substantially in proximity of the critical endpoint: in the language of thermodynamic geometry these fluctuations are responsible for the vanishing of the determinant of the metric, which results in thermodynamic instability and are thus related to the appearance of the second order phase transition at the critical endpoint.

With the help of the Mellin-Barnes transform, we show how to simultaneously resum the expansion of a heavy-quark correlator around q^2=0 (low-energy), q^2= 4 m^2 (threshold, where m is the quark mass) and q^2=-infty (high-energy) in a systematic way. We exemplify the method for the perturbative vector correlator at O(alpha_s^2) and O(alpha_s^3). We show that the coefficients, Omega(n), of the Taylor expansion of the vacuum polarization function in terms of the conformal variable omega admit, for large n, an expansion in powers of 1/n (up to logarithms of n) that we can calculate exactly. This large-n expansion has a sign-alternating component given by the logarithms of the OPE, and a fixed-sign component given by the logarithms of the threshold expansion in the external momentum q^2.
Temperature dependence of pion and sigma-meson screening masses is evaluated by the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model with the entanglement vertex. We propose a practical way of calculating meson screening masses in the NJL-type effective models. The method based on the Pauli-Villars regularization solves the well-known difficulty that the evaluaton of screening masses is not easy in the NJL-type effective models. The PNJL model with the entanglement vertex and the Pauli-Villars regularization well reproduces lattice QCD results on temperature dependence of the chiral condensate and the Polyakov loop. The method is applied to analyze temperature dependence of pion screening mass calculated with state-of-the-art lattice simulations with success in reproducing the lattice QCD results.
