This paper focuses on energy-efficient coordinated multi-point (CoMP) downlink in multi-antenna multi-cell wireless communications systems. We provide an overview of transmit beamforming designs for various energy efficiency (EE) metrics including maximizing the overall network EE, sum weighted EE and fairness EE. Generally, an EE optimization problem is a nonconvex program for which finding the globally optimal solutions requires high computational effort. Consequently, several low-complexity suboptimal approaches have been proposed. Here we sum up the main concepts of the recently proposed algorithms based on the state-of-the-art successive convex approximation (SCA) framework. Moreover, we discuss the application to the newly posted EE problems including new EE metrics and power consumption models. Furthermore, distributed implementation developed based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for the provided solutions is also discussed. For the sake of completeness, we provide numerical comparison of the SCA based approaches and the conventional solutions developed based on parametric transformations (PTs). We also demonstrate the differences and roles of different EE objectives and power consumption models.

This paper investigates the transmission energy minimization problem for the two-user downlink with strictly heterogeneous latency constraints. To cope with the latency constraints and to explicitly specify the trade-off between blocklength (latency) and reliability the normal approximation of the capacity of finite blocklength codes (FBCs) is adopted, in contrast to the classical Shannon capacity formula. We first consider the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based transmission scheme. However, due to heterogeneous latency constraints and channel conditions at receivers, the conventional successive interference cancellation may be infeasible. We thus study the problem by considering heterogeneous receiver conditions under different interference mitigation schemes and solve the corresponding NOMA design problems. It is shown that, though the energy function is not convex and does not have closed form expression, the studied NOMA problems can be globally solved semi-analytically and with low complexity. Moreover, we propose a hybrid transmission scheme that combines the time division multiple access (TDMA) and NOMA. Specifically, the hybrid scheme can judiciously perform bit and time allocation and take TDMA and NOMA as two special instances. To handle the more challenging hybrid design problem, we propose a concave approximation of the FBC rate/capacity formula, by which we obtain computationally efficient and high-quality solutions. Simulation results show that the hybrid scheme can achieve considerable transmission energy saving compared with both pure NOMA and TDMA schemes.

This paper investigates the application of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in an underlay cognitive radio network (CRN), where a multi-antenna cognitive base station (CBS) utilizes spectrum assigned to the primary user (PU) to communicate with a secondary user (SU) via IRS in the presence of multiple coordinated eavesdroppers. To achieve the trade-off between the secrecy rate (SR) and energy consumption, we propose a secrecy energy efficiency (SEE) maximization scheme by jointly design the transmit beamforming at CBS and the reflect beamforming at IRS under the SR constraint of SU, the transmit power constraint of CBS, the limited interference temperature of PU and the unit modulus constraint of IRS. The problem is challenging to solve due to the coupled optimization variables and unit modulus constraint, for which an iterative alternating optimization algorithm is proposed. As for optimizing the reflect beamforming, we introduce an auxiliary variable and convert the original non-convex problem into a semi-definite programming with rank-1 constraint, and then propose an iterative penalty function based algorithm to implement the optimal reflect beamforming. As for optimizing the transmit beamforming, we convert the original problem into an equivalent subtractive form, which is further transformed into a convex function by employing the difference of two-convex functions method. Furthermore, we provide a second-order-cone-programming approximation approach to reduce the computational complexity. The effectiveness and superiority of our proposed algorithm are verified in the simulation results.

In this paper, the design of robust linear precoders for the massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) downlink with imperfect channel state information (CSI) is investigated. The imperfect CSI for each UE obtained at the BS is modeled as statistical CSI under a jointly correlated channel model with both channel mean and channel variance information, which includes the effects of channel estimation error, channel aging and spatial correlation. The design objective is to maximize the expected weighted sum-rate. By combining the minorize-maximize (MM) algorithm with the deterministic equivalent method, an algorithm for robust linear precoder design is derived. The proposed algorithm achieves a stationary point of the expected weighted sum-rate maximization problem. To reduce the computational complexity, two low-complexity algorithms are then derived. One for the general case, and the other for the case when all the channel means are zeros. For the later case, it is proved that the beam domain transmission is optimal, and thus the precoder design reduces to the power allocation optimization in the beam domain. Simulation results show that the proposed robust linear precoder designs apply to various mobile scenarios and achieve high spectral efficiency.
This paper investigates an energy-efficient non-orthogonal transmission design problem for two downlink receivers that have strict reliability and finite blocklength (latency) constraints. The Shannon capacity formula widely used in traditional designs needs the assumption of infinite blocklength and thus is no longer appropriate. We adopt the newly finite blocklength coding capacity formula for explicitly specifying the trade-off between reliability and code blocklength. However, conventional successive interference cancellation (SIC) may become infeasible due to heterogeneous blocklengths. We thus consider several scenarios with different channel conditions and with/without SIC. By carefully examining the problem structure, we present in closed-form the optimal power and code blocklength for energy-efficient transmissions. Simulation results provide interesting insights into conditions for which non-orthogonal transmission is more energy efficient than the orthogonal transmission such as TDMA.
For downlink multi-user non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems with successive interference cancellation (SIC) receivers, and a base-station not possessing the instantaneous channel gains, the fundamental relationship between the target rates and power allocation is investigated. It is proven that the total interference from signals not removed by SIC has a fundamental upper-limit which is a function of the target rates, and the outage probability is one when exceeding this limit. The concept of well-behaved power allocation strategies is defined, and its properties are proven to be derived solely based on the target rates. The existence of power allocation strategies that enable NOMA to outperform OMA in per-user outage probability is proven, and are always well-behaved for the case when the outage probability performance of NOMA and OMA are equal for all users. The proposed SIC decoding order is then shown to the most energy efficient. The derivation of well-behaved power allocation strategies that have improved outage probability performance over OMA for each user is outlined. Simulations validate the theoretical results, demonstrating that NOMA systems can always outperform OMA systems in outage probability performance, without relying on the exact channel gains.
