The optical spectroscopic and radio interferometric HI 21 cm-line observations of the blue compact dwarf galaxy Mrk 22 are presented. The Wolf-Rayet (WR) emission line features corresponding to high ionization lines of HeII $lambda$4686 and CIV $lambda$5808 from young massive stars are detected. The ages of two prominent star forming regions in the galaxy are estimated as $sim$10 Myr and $sim$ 4 Myr. The galaxy has non-thermal radio deficiency, which also indicates a young star-burst and lack of supernovae events from the current star formation activities, consistent with the detection of WR emission lines features. A significant N/O enrichment is seen in the fainter star forming region. The gas-phase metallicities [12 + log(O/H)] for the bright and faint regions are estimated as 7.98$pm$0.07 and 7.46$pm$0.09 respectively. The galaxy has a large diffuse HI envelop. The HI images reveal disturbed gas kinematics and HI clouds outside the optical extent of the galaxy, indicating recent tidal interaction or merger in the system. The results strongly indicate that Mrk 22 is undergoing a chemical and morphological evolution due to ongoing star formation, most likely triggered by a merger.

Nearby, low-metallicity dwarf starburst galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) offer the best local analogs to study the early evolution of galaxies and their supermassive black holes (BHs). Here we present a detailed multi-wavelength investigation of star formation and BH activity in the low-metallicity dwarf-dwarf galaxy merger Mrk 709. Using Hubble Space Telescope H$alpha$ and continuum imaging combined with Keck spectroscopy, we determine that the two dwarf galaxies are likely in the early stages of a merger (i.e., their first pass) and discover a spectacular $sim 10$ kpc-long string of young massive star clusters ($t lesssim 10$ Myr; $M_star gtrsim 10^5~M_odot$) between the galaxies triggered by the interaction. We find that the southern galaxy, Mrk 709 S, is undergoing a clumpy mode of star formation resembling that seen in high-redshift galaxies, with multiple young clusters/clumps having stellar masses between $10^7$ and $10^8~M_odot$. Furthermore, we present additional evidence for a low-luminosity AGN in Mrk 709 S (first identified by Reines et al. 2014 (arXiv:1405.0278) using radio and X-ray observations), including the detection of the coronal [Fe X] optical emission line. The work presented here provides a unique glimpse into processes key to hierarchical galaxy formation and BH growth in the early Universe.

A clear link between a dwarf-dwarf merger event and enhanced star formation (SF) in the recent past was recently identified in the gas-dominated merger remnant VCC 848, offering by far the clearest view of a gas-rich late-stage dwarf-dwarf merger. We present a joint analysis of JVLA HI emission-line mapping, optical imaging and numerical simulations of VCC 848, in order to examine the impact of the merger on the stellar and gaseous distributions. VCC 848 has less than 30% of its HI gas concentrated within the central high-surface-brightness star-forming region, while the remaining HI is entrained in outlying tidal features. Particularly, a well-defined tidal arm reaches N(HI) comparable to the galaxy center but lacks SF. The molecular gas mass inferred from the current SF rate (SFR) dominates over the atomic gas mass in the central ~ 1.5 kpc. VCC 848 is consistent with being a main-sequence star-forming galaxy for its current stellar mass and SFR. The HII region luminosity distribution largely agrees with that of normal dwarf irregulars with similar luminosities, except that the brightest HII region is extraordinarily luminous. Our N-body/hydrodynamical simulations imply that VCC 848 is a merger between a gas-dominated primary progenitor and a gas-bearing star-dominated secondary. The progenitors had their first passage on a near-radial non-coplanar orbit more than 1 Gyr ago. The merger did not build up a core as compact as typical compact dwarfs with centralized starburst, which may be partly ascribed to the star-dominated nature of the secondary, and in a general sense, a negative stellar feedback following intense starbursts triggered at early stages of the merger.
New FUSE far-UV spectroscopy of the nearby metal-deficient (Zsun/8) cometary Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxy Markarian (Mrk) 59 is discussed. The data are used to investigate element abundances in its interstellar medium. The H I absorption lines are characterized by narrow cores which are interstellar in origin and by broad wings which are stellar in origin. The mean interstellar H I column density is ~ 7x10E20 cm-2 in Mrk 59. No H2 lines are seen and N(H2) is < 10E15 cm-2 at the 10 sigma level. The lack of diffuse H2 is due to the combined effect of a strong UV radiation field which destroys the H2 molecules and a low metallicity which leads to a scarcity of dust grains necessary for H2 formation. P-Cygni profiles of the S VI 933.4, 944.5 A and O VI 1031.9, 1037.6 A lines are seen, indicating the presence of very hot O stars and a stellar wind terminal velocity of ~ 1000 km/s. By fitting the line profiles with multiple components having each a velocity dispersion b = 7 km/s and spanning a radial velocity range of 100 km/s, some of which can be saturated, we derive heavy element abundances in the neutral gas. We find log N(O I)/N(H I) = -5.0+/-0.3 or [O I/H I] = -1.5 for the neutral gas, about a factor of 10 below the oxygen abundance of the supergiant H II region, implying self-enrichment of the latter.
We use integral field spectroscopic (IFS) observations from Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph-North (GMOS-N) to analyse the ionised gas in the principal star-forming region in the blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 1415+437. The IFS data enable us to map the weak auroral line [O III] $lambda$4363 at a spatial scale of $sim$6.5 pc across a region of $sim$143 $times$ 143 pc$^2$. This in turn allows us to use the robust direct T$_e$-method to map the ionic and elemental abundances of nitrogen (N) along with the alpha-elements, oxygen (O), neon (Ne), sulphur (S) and argon (Ar). We utilise these abundances to map the relative abundances of N, Ne, S and Ar with respect to O. We segment this predominantly photoionised region of study into elliptical annuli on the basis of the H$alpha$ flux distribution to study the variation of chemical abundances and their ratios, and find no significant chemical variation. We also perform chemical abundance analysis on the integrated spectra of the region under study and elliptical annuli within it. We find that the inferred abundances are in agreement with the median of the abundances obtained from the chemical abundance maps of the principal star-forming region and the mapped values within annuli. The finding has important implications for direct comparison with high-redshift observations, where spatial resolution is not available, and for a consistent approach to track chemical evolution across cosmic time.
We present the star formation history and chemical evolution of the Sextans dSph dwarf galaxy as a function of galactocentric distance. We derive these from the $VI$ photometry of stars in the $42 times 28$ field using the SMART model developed by Yuk & Lee (2007, ApJ, 668, 876) and adopting a closed-box model for chemical evolution. For the adopted age of Sextans 15 Gyr, we find that $>$84% of the stars formed prior to 11 Gyr ago, significant star formation extends from 15 to 11 Gyr ago ($sim$ 65% of the stars formed 13 to 15 Gyr ago while $sim$ 25% formed 11 to 13 Gyr ago), detectable star formation continued to at least 8 Gyr ago, the star formation history is more extended in the central regions than the outskirts, and the difference in star formation rates between the central and outer regions is most marked 11 to 13 Gyr ago. Whether blue straggler stars are interpreted as intermediate age main sequence stars affects conclusions regarding the star formation history for times 4 to 8 Gyr ago, but this is at most only a trace population. We find that the metallicity of the stars increased rapidly up to [Fe/H]=--1.6 in the central region and to [Fe/H]=--1.8 in the outer region within the first Gyr, and has varied slowly since then. The abundance ratios of several elements derived in this study are in good agreement with the observational data based on the high resolution spectroscopy in the literature. We conclude that the primary driver for the radial gradient of the stellar population in this galaxy is the star formation history, which self-consistently drives the chemical enrichment history.
