Here we discuss impacts of distance determinations on the Galactic disk traced by relatively young objects. The Galactic disk, about 40 kpc in diameter, is a cross-road of studies on the methods of measuring distances, interstellar extinction, evolution of galaxies, and other subjects of interest in astronomy. A proper treatment of interstellar extinction is, for example, crucial for estimating distances to stars in the disk outside the small range of the solar neighborhood. Well review the current status of relevant studies and discuss some new approaches to the extinction law. When the extinction law is reasonably constrained, distance indicators found in today and future surveys are telling us stellar distribution and more throughout the Galactic disk. Among several useful distance indicators, the focus of this review is Cepheids and open clusters (especially contact binaries in clusters). These tracers are particularly useful for addressing the metallicity gradient of the Galactic disk, an important feature for which comparison between observations and theoretical models can reveal the evolutionary of the disk.
Type II Cepheids are both useful distance indicators and tracers of old age stellar populations in their host galaxy. We summarize near-infrared observations of type II Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud and discuss the absolute calibration of their Period-Luminosity relations. Combining with the near-infrared data for type II Cepheids in the Galactic bulge from the VISTA VVV survey, we estimated a robust distance to the Galactic center. We found that type II Cepheids trace the spherically symmetric spatial distribution with possible evidence of ellipsoidal structure, similar to RR Lyrae stars. Together with Gaia and VVV proper motions, type II Cepheids were found to trace the old, metal-poor, kinematically hot stellar populations in the Galactic bulge.

The orbital properties of stars in the disk are signatures of their formation, but they are also expected to change over time due to the dynamical evolution of the Galaxy. Stellar orbits can be quantified by three dynamical actions, J_r, L_z, and J_z, which provide measures of the orbital eccentricity, guiding radius, and non-planarity, respectively. Changes in these dynamical actions over time reflect the strength and efficiency of the evolutionary processes that drive stellar redistributions. We examine how dynamical actions of stars are correlated with their age using two samples of stars with well-determined ages: 78 solar twin stars (with ages to ~5%) and 4376 stars from the APOKASC2 sample (~20%). We compute actions using spectroscopic radial velocities from previous surveys and parallax and proper motion measurements from Gaia DR2. We find weak gradients in all actions with stellar age, of (7.51 +/- 0.52, -29.0 +/- 1.83, 1.54 +/- 0.18) kpc km/s/Gyr for J_r, L_z, and J_z, respectively. There is, however, significant scatter in the action-age relation. We caution that our results will be affected by the restricted spatial extent of our sample, particularly in the case of J_z. Nevertheless, these action-age gradients and their associated variances provide strong constraints on the efficiency of the mechanisms that drive the redistribution of stellar orbits over time and demonstrate that actions are informative as to stellar age. The shallow action-age gradients combined with the large dispersion in each action at a given age, however, renders the prospect of age inference from orbits of individual stars bleak. Using the precision measurements of [Fe/H] and [$alpha$/Fe] for our stars we investigate the abundance-action relationship and find weak correlations. Similar to our stellar age results, dynamical actions afford little discriminating power between low- and high-$alpha$ stars.
In this paper we analyse the evolutionary status and properties of the old open cluster NGC 2355, located in the Galactic anticentre direction, as a part of the long term programme BOCCE. NGC 2355 was observed with LBC@LBT using the Bessel $B$, $V$, and $I_c$ filters. The cluster parameters have been obtained using the synthetic colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) method, as done in other papers of this series. Additional spectroscopic observations with FIES@NOT of three giant stars were used to determine the chemical properties of the cluster. Our analysis shows that NGC 2355 has metallicity slightly less than solar, with [Fe/H]$=-0.06$ dex, age between 0.8 and 1 Gyr, reddening $E(B-V)$ in the range 0.14 and 0.19 mag, and distance modulus $(m-M)_0$ of about 11 mag. We also investigated the abundances of O, Na, Al, $alpha$, iron-peak, and neutron capture elements, showing that NGC 2355 falls within the abundance distribution of similar clusters (same age and metallicity). The Galactocentric distance of NGC~2355 places it at the border between two regimes of metallicity distribution; this makes it an important cluster for the study of the chemical properties and evolution of the disc.
Quasars accreting matter at very high rates (known as extreme Population A [xA] quasars, possibly associated with super-Eddington accreting massive black holes) may provide a new class of distance indicators covering cosmic epochs from present day up to less than 1 Gyr from the Big Bang. At a more fundamental level, xA quasars are of special interest in studies of the physics of AGNs and host galaxy evolution. However, their observational properties are largely unknown. xA quasars can be identified in relatively large numbers from major optical surveys over a broad range of redshifts, thanks to selection criteria defined from the systematic changes along the quasars main sequence. It has been possible to build a sample of about 250 quasars at low and intermediate redshift, and larger samples can be easily selected from the latest data releases of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. A large sample can clarify the main properties of xA quasars which are expected - unlike the general population of quasars - to radiate at an extreme, well defined Eddington ratio with small scatter. As a result of the small scatter in Eddington ratio shown by xA quasars, we propose a method to derive the main cosmological parameters based on redshift-independent virial luminosity estimates from measurements of emission line widths, roughly equivalent to the luminosity estimates based from line width in early and late type galaxies. A major issue related to the cosmological application of the xA quasar luminosity estimates from line widths is the identification of proper emission lines whose broadening is predominantly virial over a wide range of redshift and luminosity. We report on preliminary developments using the AlIII 1860 intermediate ionization line and the Hydrogen Balmer line H-beta as virial broadening estimators, and we briefly discuss the perspective of the method based on xA quasars.
