Deep learning driven by large neural network models is overtaking traditional machine learning methods for understanding unstructured and perceptual data domains such as speech, text, and vision. At the same time, the as-a-Service-based business model on the cloud is fundamentally transforming the information technology industry. These two trends: deep learning, and as-a-service are colliding to give rise to a new business model for cognitive application delivery: deep learning as a service in the cloud. In this paper, we will discuss the details of the software architecture behind IBMs deep learning as a service (DLaaS). DLaaS provides developers the flexibility to use popular deep learning libraries such as Caffe, Torch and TensorFlow, in the cloud in a scalable and resilient manner with minimal effort. The platform uses a distribution and orchestration layer that facilitates learning from a large amount of data in a reasonable amount of time across compute nodes. A resource provisioning layer enables flexible job management on heterogeneous resources, such as graphics processing units (GPUs) and central processing units (CPUs), in an infrastructure as a service (IaaS) cloud.
Deep learning (DL), a form of machine learning, is becoming increasingly popular in several application domains. As a result, cloud-based Deep Learning as a Service (DLaaS) platforms have become an essential infrastructure in many organizations. These systems accept, schedule, manage and execute DL training jobs at scale. This paper explores dependability in the context of a DLaaS platform used in IBM. We begin by explaining how DL training workloads are different, and what features ensure dependability in this context. We then describe the architecture, design and implementation of a cloud-based orchestration system for DL training. We show how this system has been architected with dependability in mind while also being horizontally scalable, elastic, flexible and efficient. We also present an initial empirical evaluation of the overheads introduced by our platform, and discuss tradeoffs between efficiency and dependability.
The global economic recession and the shrinking budget of IT projects have led to the need of development of integrated information systems at a lower cost. Today, the emerging phenomenon of cloud computing aims at transforming the traditional way of computing by providing both software applications and hardware resources as a service. With the rapid evolution of Information Communication Technology (ICT) governments, organizations and businesses are looking for solutions to improve their services and integrate their IT infrastructures. In recent years advanced technologies such as SOA and Cloud computing have been evolved to address integration problems. The Clouds enormous capacity with comparable low cost makes it an ideal platform for SOA deployment. This paper deals with the combined approach of Cloud and Service Oriented Architecture along with a Case Study and a review.
Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) is a relatively recent advancement in the field of privacy-preserving technologies. FHE allows for the arbitrary depth computation of both addition and multiplication, and thus the application of abelian/polynomial equations, like those found in deep learning algorithms. This project investigates, derives, and proves how FHE with deep learning can be used at scale, with relatively low time complexity, the problems that such a system incurs, and mitigations/solutions for such problems. In addition, we discuss how this could have an impact on the future of data privacy and how it can enable data sharing across various actors in the agri-food supply chain, hence allowing the development of machine learning-based systems. Finally, we find that although FHE incurs a high spatial complexity cost, the time complexity is within expected reasonable bounds, while allowing for absolutely private predictions to be made, in our case for milk yield prediction.
Cloud computing has attracted both end-users and Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) in recent years. Improving resource utilization rate (RUtR), such as CPU and memory usages on servers, while maintaining Quality-of-Service (QoS) is one key challenge faced by CSPs with warehouse-scale data centers. Prior works proposed various algorithms to reduce energy cost or to improve RUtR, which either lack the fine-grained task scheduling capabilities, or fail to take a comprehensive system model into consideration. This article presents H2O-Cloud, a Hierarchical and Hybrid Online task scheduling framework for warehouse-scale CSPs, to improve resource usage effectiveness while maintaining QoS. H2O-Cloud is highly scalable and considers comprehensive information such as various workload scenarios, cloud platform configurations, user request information and dynamic pricing model. The hierarchy and hybridity of the framework, combined with its deep reinforcement learning (DRL) engines, enable H2O-Cloud to efficiently start on-the-go scheduling and learning in an unpredictable environment without pre-training. Our experiments confirm the high efficiency of the proposed H2O-Cloud when compared to baseline approaches, in terms of energy and cost while maintaining QoS. Compared with a state-of-the-art DRL-based algorithm, H2O-Cloud achieves up to 201.17% energy cost efficiency improvement, 47.88% energy efficiency improvement and 551.76% reward rate improvement.
Given a large number of online services on the Internet, from time to time, people are still struggling to find out the services that they need. On the other hand, when there are considerable research and development on service discovery and service recommendation, most of the related work are centralized and thus suffers inherent shortages of the centralized systems, e.g., adv-driven, lack at trust, transparence and fairness. In this paper, we propose a ServiceNet - a peer-to-peer (P2P) service network for service discovery and service recommendation. ServiceNet is inspired by blockchain technology and aims at providing an open, transparent and self-growth, and self-management service ecosystem. The paper will present the basic idea, an architecture design of the prototype, and an initial implementation and performance evaluation the prototype design.
