The initial conditions of molecular clumps in which high-mass stars form are poorly understood. In particular, a more detailed study of the earliest evolutionary phases is needed. The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the whole inner Galactic disk at 870 micron, ATLASGAL, has been conducted to discover high-mass star-forming regions at different evolutionary phases. Using the Parkes telescope, we observed the NH3 (1,1) to (3,3) inversion transitions towards 354 ATLASGAL clumps in the fourth quadrant. For a subsample of 289 sources, the N2H+ (1-0) line was measured with the Mopra telescope. We measured a median NH3(1,1) line width of about 2 km/s and rotational temperatures from 12 to 28 K with a mean of 18 K. For a subsample with detected NH3 (2,2) hyperfine components, we found that the commonly used method to compute the (2,2) optical depth from the (1,1) optical depth and the (2,2) to (1,1) main beam brightness temperature ratio leads to an underestimation of the rotational temperature and column density. A larger median virial parameter of about 1 is determined using the broader N2H+ line width than is estimated from the NH3 line width of about 0.5 with a general trend of a decreasing virial parameter with increasing gas mass. We found a warmer surrounding of ATLASGAL clumps than the surrounding of low-mass cores and smaller velocity dispersions in low-mass than high-mass star-forming regions. The NH3 (1,1) inversion transition of 49% of the sources shows hyperfine structure anomalies. The intensity ratio of the outer hyperfine structure lines with a median of 1.27+/-0.03 and a standard deviation of 0.45 is significantly higher than 1, while the intensity ratios of the inner satellites with a median of 0.9+/-0.02 and standard deviation of 0.3 and the sum of the inner and outer hyperfine components with a median of 1.06+/-0.02 and standard deviation of 0.37 are closer to 1.

Deuteration has been used as a tracer of the evolutionary phases of low- and high-mass star formation. The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLASGAL) provides an important repository for a detailed statistical study of massive star-forming clumps in the inner Galactic disc at different evolutionary phases. We study the amount of deuteration using NH2D in a representative sample of high-mass clumps discovered by the ATLASGAL survey covering various evolutionary phases of massive star formation. Unbiased spectral line surveys at 3 mm were thus conducted towards ATLASGAL clumps between 85 and 93 GHz with the Mopra telescope and from 84 to 115 GHz using the IRAM 30m telescope. A subsample was followed up in the NH2D transition at 74 GHz with the IRAM 30m telescope. We determined the deuterium fractionation from the column density ratio of NH2D and NH3 and measured the NH2D excitation temperature for the first time from the simultaneous modelling of the 74 and 110 GHz line using MCWeeds. We find a large range of the NH2D to NH3 column density ratio up to 1.6+/-0.7 indicating a high degree of NH3 deuteration in a subsample of the clumps. Our analysis yields a clear difference between NH3 and NH2D rotational temperatures for a fraction of the sources. We therefore advocate observation of the NH2D transitions at 74 and 110 GHz simultaneously to determine the NH2D temperature directly. We determine a median ortho-to-para column density ratio of 3.7+/-1.2. The high detection rate of NH2D confirms a high deuteration previously found in massive star-forming clumps. Using the excitation temperature of NH2D instead of NH3 is needed to avoid an overestimation of deuteration. We measure a higher detection rate of NH2D in sources at early evolutionary stages. The deuterium fractionation shows no correlation with evolutionary tracers such as the NH3 (1,1) line width, or rotational temperature.
Deep near-IR images from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) Survey were used to search for RR Lyrae stars in the Southern Galactic plane. A sizable sample of 404 RR Lyrae of type ab stars was identified across a thin slice of the 4$^{rm th}$ Galactic quadrant ($295deg < l < 350deg$, $-2.24deg < b < -1.05deg$). The samples distance distribution exhibits a maximum density that occurs at the bulge tangent point, which implies that this primarily Oosterhoff type I population of RRab stars does not trace the bar delineated by their red clump counterparts. The bulge RR Lyrae population does not extend beyond $l sim340 deg$, and the samples spatial distribution presents evidence of density enhancements and substructure that warrants further investigation. Indeed, the sample may be employed to evaluate Galactic evolution models, and is particularly lucrative since half of the discovered RR Lyrae are within reach of Gaia astrometric observations.
We present the first results from a new carbon monoxide (CO) survey of the southern Galactic plane being conducted with the Mopra radio telescope in Australia. The 12CO, 13CO and C18O J=1-0 lines are being mapped over the l = 305-345 deg, b = +/- 0.5 deg portion of the 4th quadrant of the Galaxy, at 35 spatial and 0.1 km/s spectral resolution. The survey is being undertaken with two principal science objectives: (i) to determine where and how molecular clouds are forming in the Galaxy and (ii) to probe the connection between molecular clouds and the missing gas inferred from gamma-ray observations. We describe the motivation for the survey, the instrumentation and observing techniques being applied, and the data reduction and analysis methodology. In this paper we present the data from the first degree surveyed, l = 323-324 deg, b = +/- 0.5 deg. We compare the data to the previous CO survey of this region and present metrics quantifying the performance being achieved; the rms sensitivity per 0.1 km/s velocity channel is ~1.5K for 12CO and ~0.7K for the other lines. We also present some results from the region surveyed, including line fluxes, column densities, molecular masses, 12CO/13CO line ratios and 12CO optical depths. We also examine how these quantities vary as a function of distance from the Sun when averaged over the 1 square degree survey area. Approximately 2 x 10E6 MSun of molecular gas is found along the G323 sightline, with an average H2 number density of nH2 ~ 1 cm-3 within the Solar circle. The CO data cubes will be made publicly available as they are published.
We surveyed the Aquila Rift complex including the Serpens South and W40 region in the NH$_3$(1,1) and (2,2) transitions making use of the Nanshan 26-m telescope. The kinetic temperatures of the dense gas in the Aquila Rift complex range from 8.9 to 35.0K with an average of 15.3$pm$6.1K. Low gas temperatures associate with Serpens South ranging from 8.9 to 16.8K with an average 12.3$pm$1.7K, while dense gas in the W40 region shows higher temperatures ranging from 17.7 to 35.0K with an average of 25.1$pm$4.9 K. A comparison of kinetic temperatures against HiGal dust temperatures indicates that the gas and dust temperatures are in agreement in the low mass star formation region of Serpens South. In the high mass star formation region W40, the measured gas kinetic temperatures are higher than those of the dust. The turbulent component of the velocity dispersion of NH$_3$(1,1) is found to be positively correlated with the gas kinetic temperature, which indicates that the dense gas may be heated by dissipation of turbulent energy. For the fractional total-NH3 abundance obtained by a comparison with Herschel infrared continuum data representing dust emission we find values from 0.1 to 21$times 10^{-8}$ with an average of 6.9$(pm 4.5)times 10^{-8}$. Serpens South also shows a fractional total-NH3 abundance ranging from 0.2 to 21$times 10^{-8}$ with an average of 8.6($pm 3.8)times 10^{-8}$. In W40, values are lower, between 0.1 and 4.3$times 10^{-8}$ with an average of 1.6($pm 1.4)times 10^{-8}$. Weak velocity gradients demonstrate that the rotational energy is a negligible fraction of the gravitational energy. In W40, gas and dust temperatures are not strongly dependent on the projected distance to the recently formed massive stars. Overall, the morphology of the mapped region is ring-like, with strong emission at lower and weak emission at higher Galactic longitudes.
The formation processes and the evolutionary stages of high-mass stars are poorly understood compared to low-mass stars. Large-scale surveys are needed to provide an unbiased census of high column density sites which can potentially host precursors to high-mass stars. Here we use the ATLASGAL survey covering 420 sq. degree of the Galactic plane at 870 $mu$m; and use the MRE-GLC method to identify the population of embedded sources throughout the inner Galaxy. We identify in total 10861 compact sub-millimeter sources with fluxes above 5 sigma. Completeness tests show that our catalogue is 97% complete above 5 sigma and >99% complete above 7$sigma$. We correlate this sample with mid-infrared point source catalogues (MSX at 21.3 $mu$m and WISE at 22 $mu$m) and determine a lower limit of ~33% that are associated with embedded protostellar objects. We note that the proportion of clumps associated with mid-infrared sources increases with increasing flux density, achieving a rather constant fraction of ~75% of all clumps with fluxes over 5 Jy/beam being associated with star-formation. Examining the source counts as a function of Galactic longitude we are able to identify the most prominent star forming regions in the Galaxy. From the fraction of the likely massive quiescent clumps (~25%) we estimate a formation time-scale of ~7.5+/-2.5 $times$ 10$^4$yr for the deeply embedded phase before the emergence of luminous YSOs. Such a short duration for the formation of high-mass stars in massive clumps clearly proves that the earliest phases have to be dynamic with supersonic motions.
