Coherent one-particle one-hole (1p1h) excitations have given us effective insights into general nuclear excitations. However, the two-particle two-hole (2p2h) excitation beyond 1p1h is now recognized as critical for the proper description of experimental data of various nuclear responses. The spin-flip charge-exchange reactions $^{48}{rm Ca}(p,n)^{48}{rm Sc}$ are investigated to clarify the role of the 2p2h effect on their cross sections. The Fermi transition of $^{48}{rm Ca}$ via the $(p,n)$ reaction is also investigated in order to demonstrate our framework. The transition density is calculated microscopically with the second Tamm-Dancoff approximation, and the distorted-wave Born approximation is employed to describe the reaction process. A phenomenological one-range Gaussian interaction is used to prepare the form factor. For the Fermi transition, our approach describes the experimental behavior of the cross section better than the Lane model, which is the conventional method. For spin-flip excitations including the GT transition, the 2p2h effect decreases the magnitude of the cross section and does not change the shape of the angular distribution. The $Delta l=2$ transition of the present reaction is found to play a negligible role. The 2p2h effect will not change the angular-distributed cross section of spin-flip responses. This is because the transition density of the Gamow-Teller response, the leading contribution to the cross section, is not significantly varied by the 2p2h effect.

Spin-isospin transitions in nuclei away from the valley of stability are essential for the description of astrophysically relevant weak interaction processes. While they remain mainly beyond the reach of experiment, theoretical modeling provides important insight into their properties. In order to describe the spin-isospin response, vcthe proton-neutron relativistic quasiparticle random phase approximation (PN-RQRPA) is formulated using the relativistic density-dependent point coupling interaction, and separable pairing interaction in both the $T=1$ and $T=0$ pairing channels. By implementing recently established DD-PCX interaction with improved isovector properties relevant for the description of nuclei with neutron-to-proton number asymmetry, the isobaric analog resonances (IAR) and Gamow-Teller resonances (GTR) have been investigated. In contrast to other models that usually underestimate the IAR excitation energies in Sn isotope chain, the present model accurately reproduces the experimental data, while the GTR properties depend on the isoscalar pairing interaction strength. This framework provides not only an improved description of the spin-isospin response in nuclei, but it also allows future large scale calculations of charge-exchange excitations and weak interaction processes in stellar environment.
The theoretical approach to a sequential heavy ion double charge exchange reaction is presented. A brief introduction into the formal theory of second-order nuclear reactions and their application to Double Single Charge Exchange (DSCE) reactions by distorted wave theory is given, thereby completing the theoretical background to our recent work [1]. Formally, the DSCE reaction amplitudes are shown to be separable into superpositions of distortion factors, accounting for initial and final state ion--ion interactions, and nuclear matrix elements. A broad space is given to the construction of nuclear DSCE response functions on the basis of polarization propagator theory. The nuclear response tensors resemble the nuclear matrix elements of $2 ubetabeta$ decay in structure but contain in general a considerable more complex multipole and spin structure. The QRPA theory is used to derive explicit expressions for nuclear matrix elements (NMEs). The differences between the NME of the first and the second interaction vertexes in a DSCE reaction is elucidated. Reduction schemes for the transition form factors are discussed by investigating the closure approximation and the momentum structure of form factors. DSCE unit strength cross sections are derived.

Proton-${}^3$H elastic scattering and charge-exchange reaction ${}^3$H$(p,n){}^3$He in the energy regime above four-nucleon breakup threshold are described in the momentum-space transition operator framework. Fully converged results are obtained using realistic two-nucleon potentials and two-proton Coulomb force as dynamic input. Differential cross section, proton analyzing power, outgoing neutron polarization, and proton-to-neutron polarization transfer coefficients are calculated between 6 and 30 MeV proton beam energy. Good agreement with the experimental data is found for the differential cross section both in elastic and charge-exchange reactions; the latter shows a complicated energy and angular dependence. The most sizable discrepancies between predictions and data are found for the proton analyzing power and outgoing neutron polarization in the charge-exchange reaction, while the respective proton-to-neutron polarization transfer coefficients are well described by the calculations.
Small-angle, two-particle correlation functions have been measured for 36Ar+ 112,124Sn collisions at E/A = 61 MeV. Total momentum gated neutron-proton (np) and proton-proton (pp) correlations are stronger for the 124Sn-target. Some of the correlation functions for particle pairs involving deuterons or tritons (nd, pt, and nt) also show a dependence on the isospin of the emitting source.
The strong interactions among nucleons have an approximate spin-isospin exchange symmetry that arises from the properties of quantum chromodynamics in the limit of many colors, $N_c$. However this large-$N_c$ symmetry is well hidden and reveals itself only when averaging over intrinsic spin orientations. Furthermore, the symmetry is obscured unless the momentum resolution scale is close to an optimal scale that we call $Lambda_{{rm large-}N_c}$. We show that the large-$N_c$ derivation requires a momentum resolution scale of $Lambda_{{rm large-}N_c} sim 500$ MeV. We derive a set of spin-isospin exchange sum rules and discuss implications for the spectrum of $^{30}$P and applications to nuclear forces, nuclear structure calculations, and three-nucleon interactions.
