We compare the results of the semi-classical (SC) and quantum-mechanical (QM) formalisms for angular-momentum changing transitions in Rydberg atom collisions given by Vrinceanu & Flannery, J. Phys. B 34, L1 (2001), and Vrinceanu, Onofrio & Sadeghpour, ApJ 747, 56 (2012), with those of the SC formalism using a modified Monte Carlo realization. We find that this revised SC formalism agrees well with the QM results. This provides further evidence that the rates derived from the QM treatment are appropriate to be used when modelling recombination through Rydberg cascades, an important process in understanding the state of material in the early universe. The rates for $Deltaell=pm1$ derived from the QM formalism diverge when integrated to sufficiently large impact parameter, $b$. Further to the empirical limits to the $b$ integration suggested by Pengelly & Seaton, MNRAS 127, 165 (1964), we suggest that the fundamental issue causing this divergence in the theory is that it does not fully cater for the finite time taken for such distant collisions to complete.

Local master equations are a widespread tool to model open quantum systems, especially in the context of many-body systems. These equations, however, are believed to lead to thermodynamic anomalies and violation of the laws of thermodynamics. In contrast, here we rigorously prove that local master equations are consistent with thermodynamics and its laws without resorting to a microscopic model, as done in previous works. In particular, we consider a quantum system in contact with multiple baths and identify the relevant contributions to the total energy, heat currents and entropy production rate. We show that the second law of thermodynamics holds when one considers the proper expression we derive for the heat currents. We confirm the results for the quantum heat currents by using a heuristic argument that connects the quantum probability currents with the energy currents, using an analogous approach as in classical stochastic thermodynamics. We finally use our results to investigate the thermodynamic properties of a set of quantum rotors operating as thermal devices and show that a suitable design of three rotors can work as an absorption refrigerator or a thermal rectifier. For the machines considered here, we also perform an optimisation of the system parameters using an algorithm of reinforcement learning.
Many particle physics models for dark matter self-interactions - motivated to address long-standing challenges to the collisionless cold dark matter paradigm - fall within the semi-classical regime, with interaction potentials that are long-range compared to the de Broglie wavelength for dark matter particles. In this work, we present a quantum mechanical derivation and new analytic formulas for the semi-classical momentum transfer and viscosity cross sections for self-interactions mediated by a Yukawa potential. Our results include the leading quantum corrections beyond the classical limit and allow for both distinguishable and identical dark matter particles. Our formulas supersede the well-known formulas for the momentum transfer cross section obtained from the classical scattering problem, which are often used in phenomenological studies of self-interacting dark matter. Together with previous approximation formulas for the cross section in the quantum regime, our new results allow for nearly complete analytic coverage of the parameter space for self-interactions with a Yukawa potential. We also discuss the phenomenological implications of our results and provide a new velocity-averaging procedure for constraining velocity-dependent self-interactions. Our results have been implemented in the newly released code CLASSICS.

We give the alternative formulation of quasiparticle model of quark gluon plasma with medium dependent dispersion relation. The model is thermodynamically consistent provided the medium dependent contribution to the energy density is taken in to account. We establish the connection of our model with other variants of quasiparticle models which are thermodynamically consistent. We test the model by comparing the equation of state with the lattice gauge theory simulations of SU(3) pure gluodynamics .
The Na$^+$/K$^+$ ATPase is an essential component of cardiac electrophysiology, maintaining physiological Na$^+$ and K$^+$ concentrations over successive heart beats. Terkildsen et al. (2007) developed a model of the ventricular myocyte Na$^+$/K$^+$ ATPase to study extracellular potassium accumulation during ischaemia, demonstrating the ability to recapitulate a wide range of experimental data, but unfortunately there was no archived code associated with the original manuscript. Here we detail an updated version of the model and provide CellML and MATLAB code to ensure reproducibility and reusability. We note some errors within the original formulation which have been corrected to ensure that the model is thermodynamically consistent, and although this required some reparameterisation, the resulting model still provides a good fit to experimental measurements that demonstrate the dependence of Na$^+$/K$^+$ ATPase pumping rate upon membrane voltage and metabolite concentrations. To demonstrate thermodynamic consistency we also developed a bond graph version of the model. We hope that these models will be useful for community efforts to assemble a whole-cell cardiomyocyte model which facilitates the investigation of cellular energetics.
In this paper, I discuss my personal journey through one research tradition, that of the resources framework, and how it has evolved over time. In my present work, understanding learners reasoning in physics in terms of the construction of large-scale models from small-scale resources emphasizes the person doing the constructing over the physics they are discussing. In this human-centered approach, I find value not in the correctness or incorrectness of a given response, but in the nature of construction, the individuals evaluation of their own ideas, and the communication between learners as they seek to understand each other. The resources framework has driven my attention toward a human-centered approach, and has had an effect on both my professional and personal life, in the process. In addition, events in my personal life have proven relevant to my professional work in ways that are reflected by my use of the resources framework to understand knowledge and learning.
