We report the results of the numerical study of the non-dissipative quantum Josephson junction chain with the focus on the statistics of many-body wave functions and local energy spectra. The disorder in this chain is due to the random offset charges. This chain is one of the simplest physical systems to study many-body localization. We show that the system may exhibit three distinct regimes: insulating, characterized by the full localization of many-body wavefunctions, fully delocalized (metallic) one characterized by the wavefunctions that take all the available phase volume and the intermediate regime in which the volume taken by the wavefunction scales as a non-trivial power of the full Hilbert space volume. In the intermediate, non-ergodic regime the Thouless conductance (generalized to many-body problem) does not change as a function of the chain length indicating a failure of the conventional single-parameter scaling theory of localization transition. The local spectra in this regime display the fractal structure in the energy space which is related with the fractal structure of wave functions in the Hilbert space. A simple theory of fractality of local spectra is proposed and a new scaling relationship between fractal dimensions in the Hilbert and energy space is suggested and numerically tested.

We present an experimental investigation of stochastic switching of a bistable Josephson junctions array resonator with a resonance frequency in the GHz range. As the device is in the regime where the anharmonicity is on the order of the linewidth, the bistability appears for a pump strength of only a few photons. We measure the dynamics of the bistability by continuously observing the jumps between the two metastable states, which occur with a rate ranging from a few Hz down to a few mHz. The switching rate strongly depends on the pump strength, readout strength and the temperature, following Kramers law. The interplay between nonlinearity and coupling, in this little explored regime, could provide a new resource for nondemolition measurements, single photon switches or even elements for autonomous quantum error correction.
Disorder in quantum systems can lead to the disruption of long-range order in the ground state and to the localization of the elementary excitations - famous examples thereof being the Bose glass of interacting bosons in a disordered or quasi-periodic environment, or the localized phase of spin chains mapping onto fermions. Here we present a two-dimensional quantum Ising model - relevant to the physics of Rydberg-atom arrays - in which positional disorder of the spins induces a randomization of the spin-spin couplings and of an on-site longitudinal field. This form of disorder preserves long-range order in the ground state, while it localizes the elementary excitations above it, faithfully described as spin waves: the spin-wave spectrum is partially localized for weak disorder (seemingly exhibiting mobility edges between localized and extended, yet non-ergodic states), while it is fully localized for strong disorder. The regime of partially localized excitations exhibits a very rich non-equilibrium dynamics following a low-energy quench: correlations and entanglement spread with a power-law behavior whose exponent is a continuous function of disorder, interpolating between ballistic and arrested transport. Our findings expose a stark dichotomy between static and dynamical properties of disordered quantum spin systems, which is readily accessible to experimental verification using quantum simulators of closed quantum many-body systems.
We present experimental data and a theoretical interpretation on the conductance near the metal-insulator transition in thin ferromagnetic Gd films of thickness b approximately 2-10 nm. A large phase relaxation rate caused by scattering of quasiparticles off spin wave excitations renders the dephasing length L_phi < b in the range of sheet resistances considered, so that the effective dimension is d = 3. The observed approximate fractional temperature power law of the conductivity is ascribed to the scaling regime near the transition. The conductivity data as a function of temperature and disorder strength collapse on to two scaling curves for the metallic and insulating regimes. The best fit is obtained for a dynamical exponent z approximately 2.5 and a correlation length critical exponent u approximately 1.4 on the metallic side and a localization length exponent u approximately 0.8 on the insulating side.
We propose a Josephson junction array which can be tuned into an unconventional insulating state by varying external magnetic field. This insulating state retains a gap to half vortices; as a consequence, such array with non-trivial global geometry exhibits a ground state degeneracy. This degeneracy is protected from the effects of external noise. We compute the gaps separating higher energy states from the degenerate ground state and we discuss experiments probing the unusual properties of this insulator.
Strictly speaking the laws of the conventional Statistical Physics, based on the Equipartition Postulate and Ergodicity Hypothesis, apply only in the presence of a heat bath. Until recently this restriction was not important for real physical systems: a weak coupling with the bath was believed to be sufficient. However, the progress in both quantum gases and solid state coherent quantum devices demonstrates that the coupling to the bath can be reduced dramatically. To describe such systems properly one should revisit the very foundations of the Statistical Mechanics. We examine this general problem for the case of the Josephson junction chain and show that it displays a novel high temperature non-ergodic phase with finite resistance. With further increase of the temperature the system undergoes a transition to the fully localized state characterized by infinite resistance and exponentially long relaxation.
