We investigate the intrinsic Baldwin effect (Beff) of the broad H$alpha$ and H$beta$ emission lines for six Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with different broad line characteristics: two Seyfert 1 (NGC 4151 and NGC 5548), two AGNs with double-peaked broad line profiles (3C 390.3 and Arp 102B), one narrow line Seyfert 1 (Ark 564), and one high-luminosity quasar with highly red asymmetric broad line profiles (E1821+643). We found that a significant intrinsic Beff was present in all Type 1 AGNs in our sample. Moreover, we do not see strong difference in intrinsic Beff slopes in different types of AGNs which probably have different physical properties, such as inclination, broad line region geometry, or accretion rate. Additionally, we found that the intrinsic Beff was not connected with the global one, which, instead, could not be detected in the broad H$alpha$ or H$beta$ emission lines. In the case of NGC 4151, the detected variation of the Beff slope could be due to the change in the site of line formation in the BLR. Finally, the intrinsic Beff might be caused by the additional optical continuum component that is not part of the ionization continuum.

A new combined data of 5 well known type 1 AGN are probed with a novel hybrid method in a search for oscillatory behavior. Additional analysis of artificial light curves obtained from the coupled oscillatory models gives confirmation for detected periods that could have physical background. We find periodic variations in the long-term light curves of 3C 390.3, NGC 4151, NGC 5548 and E1821+643, with correlation coefficients larger than 0.6. We show that oscillatory patterns of two binary black hole candidates NGC 5548 and E1821+643 corresponds to qualitatively different dynamical regimes of chaos and stability, respectively. We demonstrate that absence of oscillatory patterns in Arp 102B could be due to a weak coupling between oscillatory mechanisms. This is the first good evidence that 3C 390.3 and Arp 102B, categorized as double-peaked Balmer line objects, have qualitative different dynamics. Our analysis shows a novelty in the oscillatory dynamical patterns of the light curves of these type 1 AGN.
Results of a long-term monitoring ($gtrsim 10$ years) of the broad line and continuum fluxes of three Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), 3C 390.3, NGC 4151, and NGC 5548, are presented. We analyze the H$alpha$ and H$beta$ profile variations during the monitoring period and study different details (as bumps, absorption bands) which can indicate structural changes in the Broad Line Region (BLR). The BLR dimensions are estimated using the time lags between the continuum and the broad lines flux variations. We find that in the case of 3C 390.3 and NGC 5548 a disk geometry can explain both the broad line profiles and their flux variations, while the BLR of NGC 4151 seems more complex and is probably composed of two or three kinematically different regions.
We present the results of the long-term optical monitoring campaign of active galactic nuclei (AGN) coordinated by the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Science. This campaign has produced a remarkable set of optical spectra, since we have monitored for several decades different types of broad-line (type 1) AGN, from a Seyfert 1, double-peaked line, radio loud and radio quiet AGN, to a supermassive binary black hole candidate. Our analysis of the properties of the broad line region (BLR) of these objects is based on the variability of the broad emission lines. We hereby give a comparative review of the variability properties of the broad emission lines and the BLR of seven different type 1 AGNs, emphasizing some important results, such as the variability rate, the BLR geometry, and the presence of the intrinsic Baldwin effect. We are discussing the difference and similarity in the continuum and emission line variability, focusing on what is the impact of our results to the supermassive black hole mass determination from the BLR properties.
We present the discovery of a Baldwin effect in 8 nearby Seyfert galaxies for the three most prominent mid-infrared forbidden emission lines observable from the ground that are commonly found in AGN, [ArIII](8.99 micron), [SIV](10.51 micron), and [NeII](12.81 micron). The observations were carried out using the VLT/VISIR imager and spectroraph at the ESO/Paranal observatory. The bulk of the observed line emission comes from the inner <0.4 arcsec which corresponds to spatial scales <100 pc in our object sample. The correlation index is approximately -0.6 without significant difference among the lines. This is the strongest anti-correlation between line equivalent width and continuum luminosity found so far. In the case of Circinus, we show that despite the use of mid-infrared lines, obscuration by either the host galaxy or the circumnuclear dust torus might affect the equivalent widths. Given the small observed spatial scales from which most of the line emission emanates, it is unclear how these observations fit into the favored disappearing NLR scenario for the narrow-line Baldwin effect.

Although accretion disks are a theoretically appealing model for the geometry and dynamics of the gas in the vicinity of black holes in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), there is little direct observational evidence for their existence. The telltale signature of disk emission in AGN -- double peaked emission lines -- have so far been found in only two dozen cases in the optical. We have selected about 100 double-peaked broad emission line AGN from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) from a large sample of over 4000 AGN with z<0.4. By comparing the properties of these AGN with those of the full sample, we hope to isolate the defining characteristics of disk-emitters and ultimately answer the question: If all AGN have accretion disks, why dont they all show double-peaked disk emission lines? Here we present Gaussian parameterized Halpha line-profile measurements for the sample of double-peaked AGN in comparison with circular and elliptical accretion disk models.
